This level is worth a try. Platformer levels are cool, but this has nothing to do with platforms and jumps. Prepare your brain to solve some exciting puzzles

Heart me of you like it.
thank you!

Ah, just what I needed, puzzles. I'll give it a go in a bit. Just as soon as it shows up...

Oh, and great advertisement by the way

Sweet, puzzles are always fun. Love the idea for the level, but it still seems a little roughed out, in my opinion it could use some more polishing. The dark matter torch sconces in the beginning could have easily been another material glued or bolted to the back wall. And you've got a problematic word in your first tutorial text bubble because its all censored. Its also a shame that the puzzles don't reset, if you get trapped in one you have to restart the whole level! I'd also recommend dressing up your disolve material with stickers- the possibilities are nigh endless- you could make them look like anything you like.

Anyways you've got something really good going here, keep working with it!

I played through this and have a few comments to make.

Firstly squirlin is right, the first text bubble in level 1 is censored and the green dissolve could use some prettifying.

You can use the green dissolve as it is as it is uniform across both levels and keeps a bit of a theme but as a creator my first reaction was that it looked a bit raw and could be camouflaged behind an easily identifiable sticker. Just a personal opinion though and if you are happy with the green then go for it.

I originally made a note in regards to the checkpoint prior to the third puzzle. (Counting the two from the tutorial.) If you die in the third puzzle it is a long way to run to get back.

However when I got back I found that the path had been blocked by the multiple circle pieces that fall down from a bit higher up. It'd be good to find a way of keeping the path clear because otherwise you have to restart the level to continue.

I also found that from the end grab ball that lowers you to the score board that you can swing to the right, jump on a ledge and with a little fussing you can jump out of the level from the open space. It would be good to close up this hole.

I like the concept that you've done here, puzzles and Mr. Driller rolled into one but it seemed to be a very short level.

I played the second level and like that one as well but felt the same, very short.

It seems like you should be able to combine the two into a single level that had two real courses and two tutorial segments. I don't know about your thermometer space but with all of the materials being the same it may fit up.

The only benefit I see currently is that people who don't want to keep playing this type of level can stop after the first one and those who like it will continue on to the second one. This will result in a higher rating of the second typically.

As a last note I noticed that on the second level at the scoreboard there is a candle that is very easy to jump into the first as it is at just the height that a player jumping into the scoreboard area could land in. (And with some stupid plane shifting will get burned and/or die by the fire.)

I like the levels, they were fun but other than my previous notes thought that they were over fairly quickly.

Thanks, Trindall and squirlin. Your comments are very useful. I will try to fix the problems you have reported.
I am afraid reseting the puzzles when you die is impossible. I have tried using an emitter that recreates the whole puzzle when dying, but when I save the puzzle as an object, everything gets glued and it doesn't work anymore. Perhaps the structure of the object is too complicated to emit it.
You may be right with the dark matter. I thought it was not son bad ... but I will try decorating it with a sticker.

The levels are short, I know. As you will have to start it over again if you get stucked, I have decided to make short levels. The thermometer is not a problem. I have less than 1/4 full.

Thank you again for your comments. This evening, I will try some of your levels in response.

I don't think you necessarily need to reset the whole puzzle. If you could just block the circle pieces from falling all the way down and clogging the path that would work out as well.

If the player can squeeze past the circles then that would still work out as far as allowing players who die to get back into the puzzle.

There are probably a few different ways that you could do this probably or as you say the level isn't very long up to this point so you could also just keep it the way it is and force the player to restart.

I have just finished another part of Puzzle Miner.

It includes a fight with the Boss.
I think you will like it. Give it a try if you have time.

A little screenshot showing the boss. You have to dig through the maze and throw bombs inside the mouth of the monster. 5 bombs will kill it and you will be able to go on.

I would appreciate if you test it because I have to adjust the difficulty of the level. I would like to know if it is too easy or too hard.

Thanks

Well, I played through them and I think the boss should have more health... I defeated him and still had 2/3rds of the maze left.2009-09-18 02:34:00

I have increased the health of the boss. I have added a health meter, too. I have increased the speed of the level a bit. I think it has the right difficulty now, not too hard but you could need a couple of tries depending on your skills.

Thanks

Puzzle Miner

First of all: THAT's a brilliant name for a level in my view:
I saw this thread and my first thought was: I have to play this... I love puzzling in levels so this is a clear "play" for me...

I will play it in a few minutes and post some feedback in here....

I played all of your 3 levels.
First of all they are a fresh idea, something that is not bad at all (even if I remember a similar puzzle game from someone here, but it was a challenge or a survival).

In the first I didn't understand why the tutorial was 100% dark, but the level was a good start.
The second was really better and it actually took a restart, since I didn't figure out a puzzle...this is good.
And then the thirs, that is a real wonderful idea, that's a pity that I don't think bombs work well.
I launched God knows how many boms in the mouth before I got only one bar of his life.
It doesn't work because the bomb can explode on a block that is raising and not trigger the switch.
That can really get frustrating.
I tried 3 times the level without killing the mouth, and had always the same problems.
As I said that's a pity.
The rating system says that if the level needs adjustment you rate it 2 stars.
I rate all the level 4 stars, hoping that you'll tweak the third one.

F4F on my level Run For Your Freedom, please.

My thoughts after playing your first level:

Great idea of making a puzzle level and very nice structure - it reminds me of the golden days of the C'64 where such games are more popular than today. The room where four stone-rolls fall down after you grab the dissolvable material reminds me absoluteley of "Boulder Dash" :-) Thank you for that little experience :-)
Very nice sticker-usage at the beginning....

Some things I want to mention:
- the first hint maybee has some "bad" words because the text is shown as "*****"
- hehe: it was a little short - i hoped for more - but fortunately there are two more level of this project - very nice :-)
- the spawner of the plasma-balls is visible :-) I think you forget to switch it to invisible ...

After all I was a bit surprised that it has some kind of "race"-touch - I thougt it would have been a pure puzzle level where the player only get to the scoreboard if he is smart enough to solve all puzzles. But that's not a bad issue because you can go for much higher scores if you are fast enough!

My score for this level:
:star::star::star::star:

it was fun to play and I will defenitely play it again!
Nice work dude! :-)

(ps: due to the F4F-subject it would be nice if you can take a closer look at my Memsut-Level - thanks in advance)

Thanks for your review, OmegaSlayer. The use of bombs was just to make it harder, but I agree it can get confusing if you throw a bomb and it explodes before decreasing the boss' health.

I will try changing the bombs to dissolving material that dissolves when hitting the mouth. They could be considered as giant deadly poisoned pills or somethin

I will try your levels this evening.
Bye.

Yeah, definitelly. That was the game this level was inspired by Thank you for noticing that. Little Big Planet is about the old days, it's a nostalgic revival of the good old platformers. I tried to tweak it a bit just to remember those grid games. Thank you for noticing that

...

I let them visible to let the player know something bad is happening there. But perhaps you are right... I will try to use some graphic sign to indicate the danger and make the spawner invisible.

You are right here too. I used the race object just to allow players to try again to reach the high score by resolving the puzzles faster. The problem is people start to run insanelly fast when they hear the race starting and that was not my intention.
This week, I will make the race mode optional. I will create some stickers that unlock the race mode.

Thank you.

I played your memsut levels yesterday. I will review them in your thread later.

Neo caught the reference, BoulderDash...this means that even you guys are oldies like me...
Anyway, I'm looking to play Puzzle Miner 3 when you will tweak it, so give me a call when you're done!

Hahaha. Oldies rule!
This technical solution for boulder dash took a lot of tries ... and it kinda works.
It would be cool to find a way to create a Bomb Jack level ... and I already have the title: "Bomb Sack" lol

Ok. I think the boss (puzzle miner 3) will be ready this week. I will post my progression here

Hi !

I have played the first puzzle miner level , here are my short thoughts :

The visuals are a bit lacking in detail but work in the mood of the level.

The puzzle gameplay was pretty simple but worked very good ! It was fun to play and that's the most important thing after all.

Good job !
