Splat Invaders III: Insurrection
Archive: 57 posts
Ok, after a long haitus from the Splat Invaders series, I am finally working on part III. I didn't really want to do it unless I could be innovative and could include some new gameplay styles. I finally got motivated about a month ago. This is a level that combines the classic Splat Invaders gameplay with Pacman and Missile Command. It also uses the 3D glitch quite a bit for aesthetics since this one takes place on earth in Washington D.C. So, it looks like I'm almost done with it and I'd like to have a few people take a look at it and see if you have any ideas. I'm looking for a few folks who want to beta test it and see if it makes sense. | 2009-09-14 13:55:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
you can send me on a key, I'd love to have a look | 2009-09-14 14:42:00 Author: wexfordian Posts: 1904 |
Cool, thanks! It should be ready by tomorrow so I'll send you a key as soon as I get a few final things cleaned up. My cows are still a bit flaky. | 2009-09-14 14:49:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Well, seeing as I've already been exposed, I might as well do some further testing | 2009-09-14 14:52:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

No problem! I'm going to try to keep the beta players at max 10. | 2009-09-14 17:12:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Ahhh go on then. I'm mostly playing rather than creating atm so I'll have time to give it a few good run throughs. | 2009-09-14 17:30:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Have you enough people Ccubbage? If not, I would be really interested by a key | 2009-09-14 18:26:00 Author: Takelow Posts: 1355 |
Have you enough people Ccubbage? If not, I would be really interested by a key I will TOTALLY give you a key - I can use as much visual help as I can get | 2009-09-14 18:48:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Splat 3? Wow.. I can't count that high! If you need an extra tester, you can always count on me. (Missle Command was one of my favs way back when!) | 2009-09-14 19:03:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
I'm torn between wanting to check it out and wanting to be surprised when it's published. You decide for me. | 2009-09-14 19:21:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
It's up to you.... I WILL actually need to have a few people play it on release | 2009-09-14 20:02:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
If you're still open, I'll be more than glad to test, PSN is XrobinsonX. | 2009-09-14 20:17:00 Author: Trevor Posts: 78 |
Hmm - I'd absolute love to test this one. Splat Invaders Saga is in my top 50, but I don't know if I'd be any use testing this one - I'd be very tempted just to play it over and over. If you need anyone, please send away - otherwise if you have enough, I'll be first in the queue when it's released. | 2009-09-14 20:23:00 Author: MrsSpookyBuz Posts: 1492 |
It's up to you.... I WILL actually need to have a few people play it on release Well I'd do that too Send it over if you'd like. I can be surprised with what you change | 2009-09-14 20:33:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Okay - I sent keys to the first batch of people on my PSN friends list. I'm going to put the key into a lock level and send it PM to the rest tomorrow. | 2009-09-15 04:04:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Did you capture the key and send it or just send the key? I would like to avoid having your key in my popit forever, no matter how good the level is If it's just the key, I'll wait for the key room. | 2009-09-15 04:20:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Ok, so far BTrabucco, who I work with, has found some great bugs already. Note: Don't shoot the helium tank with the paintinator.... it will blow up and cause havoc in that part of the level. I will fix tonight. Also, when riding the elevator near the end... if you walk to the left at the top you can get squished.... doesn't break the game, but it's quite a walk to get back. | 2009-09-15 13:34:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
I had a play this morning, its excellent! The arcade revival sections are fantastic. I'm gonna have another couple of plays Cub and leave you some feedback. But for now, I'm off to shoot that helium tank to see what happens before it gets fixed. | 2009-09-15 15:27:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
But for now, I'm off to shoot that helium tank to see what happens before it gets fixed. Haha, that's exactly what I was planning on doing as soon as I get home | 2009-09-15 15:41:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Just a guess... it blows up!? [d'uh] I suppose it's not fair as I've seen what it's made out of... and what it's used for. It actually adds a bit of realism, though. It would be funny if it blew up, but a new one came rolling in from the left. You know, failure safe and funny. | 2009-09-15 16:24:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
I was expecting the level to fall apart spectacularly or something, I don't know why lol!! You just can't progress though | 2009-09-15 16:57:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |
I shot the helium tank and everything was fine...... anyway - HIGH SCORE great level Cub, I'll play it some more later to see if I can find any new glitches with it | 2009-09-15 17:33:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
One thing I'd like to ask from those of you who made it through the level... Do you think the "SMACU" section works well? Was it understandable? | 2009-09-15 17:45:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
I found no problems with it, and I rarely take in what a speech bubble says Perfectly understandable | 2009-09-15 18:10:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
If you still need testers, I'm willing to give it a go. | 2009-09-15 18:36:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
I like the changes you've made to the pacman section. Better. I had a weird problem with the helium tank section, though. I tried pushing it to the right and managed to flip it over. It got stuck and the only was to continue was to blow it up. | 2009-09-15 18:41:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Hmm... did you try pushing it before or after the balloon salesman disintegrated? You're not supposed to be able to push it very far while he's there... so that could be causing an issue (I may take that out if it causes an issue). | 2009-09-15 18:47:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
JIt actually adds a bit of realism, though. Helium's not combustable Do you think the "SMACU" section works well? Was it understandable? I'll be honest with you... I have no idea what happened there. While I was reading the instructions loads of stuff happened and I was left in control of one gun and was just shooting at nothing. Then I exited the room, got in a lift which acted a bit funny at the top and then the aliens had taken over the world Other than that it was pretty good. Great humour at the beginning, although I don't approve of the sexist undertones With the packman section, I couldn't help but think the whole room could be shrunk down, so you can't dodge the plasma and you can see the whole maze, with a fixed camera angle (shock @ me suggesting fixed cameras). The helium idea was great, especially what you fill with helium, that had me chuckling | 2009-09-15 18:51:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Before. I have to run to class, so I didn't have time to finish the level again, but I will tonight. @rtm - good point. I'll just pretend it's something more bad-***, like hydrogen. | 2009-09-15 18:59:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |

Then I exited the room, got in a lift which acted a bit funny at the top and then the aliens had taken over the world What SHOULD have happened is the text boxes should have popped up giving you instructions on working the SMACU. As soon as you stand in front of one of the white panels everything shuts and it starts working. Maybe you stood in front of the white panel before you read the text. If thats the case, maybe I need to put some cut scene cameras on the text.... or have a sponge you grab for instructions. The only way you get the bad ending is if all your cities get destroyed - which sounds like that was happening with the text up on the screen blocking your view of the action... oops... Other than that it was pretty good. Great humour at the beginning, although I don't approve of the sexist undertones Didn't really mean it to be anti-women (sexist) at all..... more anti-Britney. Maybe I'm gonna get in trouble for this one... | 2009-09-15 19:04:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Wonderful. I really love the setting. Whoever have played it knows what I mean. The first 3 section with the paintinator where a blast. I loved the third in particular, I love the pattern, especially the speed the aliens have when they drop down. In the second a couple of time the randomizer fired the plasma balls orizzontaly from left to right at a high altitude, that was quite odd, ut I don't know if you can fix it since it's clearly random. I lost some lives in the pac man room, since my understanding of English made me believe that I had to grab ALL the bubbles. The section with the cow took me some time to understand how to use the cow after having inflated it. The STFU section went good and worked well, but I didn't understand that I had to protect the shielded cities, and two of them got blasted before I understood that I had to move left and right before grabbing. Anyway, with my poor English I got TEH top score, so the level works quite fine | 2009-09-15 19:08:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
Whoaaaaaah!! This was huge fun!!! I am attempting to break it, but haven't found any issue unless you get the tank past the cows. You can manage to get it back into position and proceed, but just an fyi that it could be confusing to attempt to get on the good side again. I must have missed the smart bomb section on the SMACU as I didn't do so well. Loved that missle command stuff.. was able to steal the high score from OmegaSlayer for a bit!! Woot!! I'm sure that won't last long though! I will go back through later and give it a critcle eye as the prior two times I was smiling a bit too much. I guess the Woman President part possibly could be sexist. Maybe if you omitted the woman president part and inserted another type of funny before the oval office? Maybe something like these days, the Presidency has since been changed to a popular vote, dance off, and American Idol contest or something? Great job! Will look for bugs later! Splat splat splat splat.. | 2009-09-15 19:47:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Didn't really mean it to be anti-women (sexist) at all..... more anti-Britney. Maybe I'm gonna get in trouble for this one... "half way into the first term of the first female president and I fear something bad is going to happen" (paraphrased) I did actually lol at that! Although if someone without a sense of humour reads it the same way I did, you may get in trouble That's before you find out who it is. After you find out who it is it's even funnier . | 2009-09-15 19:52:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Yeah the SMACU bit was great, and well explained. I sucked at it though, another one of them classic Cub sections I'll play and play and play. The lift squished me first time, I think you know about that. Its an excellent level, I thought the Pacman section was really well done, but I thought it was a little hard to see the plasma coming at you at times. I'll post more as I find. | 2009-09-15 19:53:00 Author: GruntosUK Posts: 1754 |

You need to re-read that, buds.... it says (paraphrased) something like "We have our first female president, and have been enjoying peace". I was trying to convey that for once everything is going well, but I have an uneasy feeling that something bad is about to happen (because I have been called to the White House). I'm gonna fry for this.... if only I had bigger text bubbles... I'll rewrite it before Morgana25 and MrsSpookyBuz think the same thing..... Yeah the SMACU bit was great, and well explained. I sucked at it though, another one of them classic Cub sections I'll play and play and play. Its an excellent level, I thought the Pacman section was really well done. Thanks, man! That SMACU area was the first part I built of the entire level. If it didn't turn out well, I probably wouldn't have continued. I feel like each Splat game has to have some unique gameplay - which is getting harder and harder to think up. | 2009-09-15 19:59:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
You need to re-read that, buds.... it says (paraphrased) something like "We have our first female president, and have been enjoying peace". Whoops... I must have been skimming again. Maybe there isn't really an issue then. I did enjoy the pics of Arnold and Robin hysterical.. nice preface for the 'next Prez'. | 2009-09-15 20:20:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |

Yeah, I was thinking it would slowly go downhill. I thought of adding Donald Trump after Robin.... | 2009-09-15 20:23:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Okay, just played this. Firstly, I'm not sure what's been changed regarding the opening sequence about female presidents etc. The version I played wasn't in the least bit offensive - in fact, I thought it was hilarious. Some females are idiots, too, ya know! Especially Ms. Spears! Anyway, more importantly, tried really hard to break this rather than play it. Unfortunately, after the initial 3 waves of invaders, I was presented with the missile, cow, character saying 'SMACU is in lock down' and an electrified building on the right. With me still having possession of the paint gun, I immediately shot the missile. There was little effect, so I continued to grab and pull the cows to where the missile was. I got a little bit in the air, but no further, and I could see shadows of what looked like balloons on the building behind, which I assumed I was to get to. But after a few minutes of no progression, I guess the missile was integral to my proceeding in the level? Or did I miss something? I was having a good time up until this point, too | 2009-09-15 21:07:00 Author: MrsSpookyBuz Posts: 1492 |
Oh dear lord, if I'd have know I was gonna cause this much of a hoo-har and a carry on, I wouldn't have said anything! Let me explain: I knew that my paraphrased comment was not what was said and I knew that wasn't what was meant - I just twisted it that way and it became funnier. I didn't think it would actually offend anyone, unless they were looking for reasons to be offended | 2009-09-15 21:14:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Alright, I took a break from my work to check this out and had a great time with it! Here are my thoughts: - Loved the opening, very humorous. President Spears didn't really look like Britney too me though. I guess she is a bit older, but I couldn't help but think how hilarious it might be to use the actual picture you have of her. Kind of South Park style, where they would use real pics of celebrities and just cut them at the mouth and then move the mouth up and down so they can talk. Anyway, that's just an idea that popped into my head and isn't really necessary at all, because it's great as is and the dialogue is hilarious. - I thought the visuals were very good throughout. The custom backgrounds were implemented very well and actually served a purpose by making me feel like I was in DC. - The Cow section did give me a bit of trouble. It took me a second to realize that the missile was actually a helium tank, even with the balloon guy there. At first, I thought I was supposed to shoot the missile, which obviously didn't work. After a few minutes, I realized that it was helium, but I had trouble getting the cow to actually take off. I guess I would suggest adding some text here, maybe from the balloon guy that references the helium and maybe create a sequence in which the cow, once inflated, lifts off the ground (much like it does right now), but then when the player grabs it, actually lift it up more and guide it over the barrier. - I thought the SMACU was exceptional. It worked great for me and I loved the design of it. The only suggestion I would have is to speed up the aiming of the gun just a bit, but not too much. I think this would help single players, but it might make it even easier for multiple players. Maybe you could adjust the aiming speed or number of enemies if two guns are operational. So, that's what came to mind after my first playthrough. Overall, I think it's pretty darn good how it is and would only suggest the cow section as a "must tweak" area. Very nice! | 2009-09-15 21:53:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |

Ummm this time through, I accidentally ran too far and triggered the whole SMACU area, got squished and was locked out I'll give it another run in a bit and actually find out what is going on there | 2009-09-15 22:15:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Alright, I played it again. I've got it down to a rhythm now. I died once, but lost a base in the missile command type area. The aiming was just a bit slow for single player, as mrsupercomputer said. The helium part seemed better for me. The only thing I might suggest is to make the cows even more floaty. It is sometime hard to get the to lift off. I believe you are using some system to hold them in place so you can grab them, so I'm sure making them have more strength wouldn't hurt. If you don't want to change the cows, just attach some floaty above it, off-screen, attached by an invis string. I noticed that if I run right through the president part, I can take out most of the aliens before she gets abducted. Might want to block that off, or at least cut the dialogue if I run on through. Oh yeah, top score! | 2009-09-16 01:40:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Ok, I THINK I have all the issues straightened out.... whew. | 2009-09-16 03:23:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
All of them? If I find one more do I get to keep the level as my own? Edit: I'll take your silence as a yes! | 2009-09-16 03:27:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Take my silence as.... I don't sit there STARING AT THE THREAD.... I degress... That's kind of risky... look at how many have been found so far.... | 2009-09-16 03:48:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Well, I found some more stuff for you. The dialogue that you get when you talk to the president still keeps going when you run through without waiting. Simple fix: make all your timing mechanisms made out of dissolve, and dissolve them away when you get to trigger point for the first invaders room. I'm liking the new cows that float easily over the fence, as well as the new helium tank. The global light switch on the other side of the fence (which looks better delectrified by the way) triggers before you run into the building. You might want to move it a bit to the right. I was in the front plane for some reason (probably jumping when I shouldn't have been) and got "stuck" on the building front. I had to backtrack and guess which plane I was in, as it was super dark, in order to get back into the middle plane. Doing this, I also noticed that if someone managed to pop themselves between going over the fence and hitting the next checkpoint, they would respawn by the balloon guy, but it would be completely dark, and essentially impossible to see enough to get back over the fence. Just drop a global lighting reset on that checkpoint and you should be good to go. I also noticed that you increased the speed on the missile command section. Nice. | 2009-09-16 05:07:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Cool! I'll take care of those today. (although it is my anniversary today.... so I probably can't get back to it until the wife goes to bed) | 2009-09-16 13:45:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
I sent you a pic of one issue I found although as issues go it's pretty minor. I noticed that the president keeps yapping if you skip that section too but it seems comphermc already let you know that. I also managed to die on the first board after all the critters were eliminated by jumping on top of the paintinator housing. I'm not sure if it's a remnant of gas or what but I had a "gas death" when on the very top of the triangle. Didn't happen in the other 2. The maze area is really cool but I'd suggest stickering the bubbles. They are a bit tough to see depending on the color you have selected. I think it would still have the game reference feel your going for as long as they are all white or yellow. The missle command intro where you get the instructions - it's possible to get squished on the ceiling if you linger too long on the left side of the glass that comes down from the ceiling. Which is weird because you don't get squished on the floor if it comes down on you. The missle area was a bit slow to react for me too. It's fast as heck by LBP standards but I was having a bit of trouble. The other thing is I managed to destroy the big ship but only after the "fail" was triggered. I nailed the last brain right as it went off camera. Not sure if that's something you'd want to have happen or not. I liked the 3d and didn't have any problems with how you used it. A lot of the level is fairly spartan though. Heavy game play which is awesome but not a lot of details in terms of decoration. Just a personal opinion on that. Loved your presidential succesion pics too - lol last one before the one in the level - I'd vote for him! lol. Cool level CCubbage. | 2009-09-16 17:17:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |

Loved your presidential succesion pics too - lol last one before the one in the level - I'd vote for him! lol. Cool level CCubbage. Yeah, I'm going to take care of the "stop her from yapping part". The gas death above the shield - I actually have gas above all 3 areas, because if I didn't the game mechanics would pick you up and throw you all over the place, so the gas is placed in each section at the appropriate height. I'll try stickering the bubbles to see if it helps see them better, but I'm not sure it will. With getting squished by the map.... actually, it sounds like this SHOULD happen - If a REAL mechanical map came down and you got on top of it and it went back up again, you might be squished in real life. The missile command area.... I've found it it works much faster it's hard to control running back and forth. I played with about 10 different mechanics and the way it works now is the best I could find. It was one of the reasons I added the "smart bomb" for destroying everything on screen at once. As for decorations and making the level look good, I wanted to make sure the mechanics worked properly with testers - I've already started doing things to make it look better, and by release at the end of next week it should look a LOT better. With this type of level, its hard to make things look really good and then disassemble it. Happy Anny, Cubb! We'd better not see you on these forums or LBP today! I couldn't resist.... | 2009-09-16 19:34:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Ok, just a quick update - I decided I hated the cow floating section, and am instead attempting to add a really nice boss into that area. So, when thats finished I will consider the level finished and publish. Thanks everyone! | 2009-09-22 16:57:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
When's this going live then? I missed this thread entirely and I'm gutted. I get to play the finished version though so it's all good. PM me on PSN when you're hot to trot. | 2009-09-22 17:32:00 Author: Matt 82 Posts: 1096 |
