Anyone got an LED TV?

I've currently got a Pioneer 43inch plasma. It's fine, but it's 5 years old and it's a thirsty beast too.

I've seen a Samsung 46inch LED TV with full 1080p blah-di-blah, and it uses around half the power of the plasma panel. Are they reliable? The picture looked incredible.

Cheers

I have a Samsung 46" LN46A650 that I got just before the wave of LED televisions came out. Mine is the 6 series, I believe the 8 series began using LED backlighting. The price was way too high for me anyway, and the CCFL in my television works just fine, and I don't have to deal with the blooming issues of early LED TVs. 2009-09-13 22:25:00

I just swapped from LCD to a 42" plasma (no create for 100 hours for me, boo!), and took my PS3 down to the showroom so i could test a few.

I saw the LED tvs and i wasn't keen on them, the picture is so ridiculously sharp it looks unnatural to my eyes. It reminded of when you have a film on x2 fwd speed, it gives everything an almost super-imposed look. But as usual in the general confusion in the world of HD tvs, it all comes down to what your eyes prefer.

I did really like the difference plasma made to some PS3 stuff. On a 'dynamic' picture setting, LBP has an almost 3D look to it compared to the LCD, like the LED but not so pronounced as to be distracting.

No idea how reliable the LEDs are Spooky.

You could go to AVforums (http://www.avforums.com/). If there is anything wrong with them somebody on there will know. They even complain about things no human being can possibly notice without spending hours comparing and sitting centimetres in front the TV. 2009-09-14 11:36:00

I have the 46" Samsung Series 7, UE7020 or something like that. Its the LED technology one, and I've had no problems with it. The picture is superb (the best i've seen on an LCD) and theres no input lag, and zero ghosting on fast games. The 8 series is out now, that adds 200mhz MotionPlus, but it looks rubbish, so theres little point paying the extra for it.

Its an excellent set, it has a built in upscaler up for normal TV, and although it depends on the quality of the broadcast, it makes a big difference to the quality. It also uses less power like you said, and is extremely thin, 30mm.

The only bad thing is the sound from the TV, the speakers are'nt up to much but most people have surrond systems anyway now so it does'nt really make a difference.

Mine was ?1600 from 1st Audio Visual around April time, they're probably cheaper now, that was the best price at the time, and delivery and customer service was excellent from them

You can never get a good idea of picture in the electrical stores, they are to bright, and not setup correctly at all. You're better off having demos in proper Audio Visual shops were the people know what they are doing. Once calibrated properly, the LED set looks fantastic.

Yeh, buying a HDtv can be a right headache, i'd already taken one back because it made some games look particularly muddy.

Re: LEDs - Its a very different kind of picture i thought, the difference i saw between plasmas and LCD's running a Blu-ray were fairly minimal. Bung it on one of the new Samsung LED's and I thought there was a noticeably different characteristic to the picture. Some people will love it, others won't.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

For the LED demo I saw, I was in a 'testing booth' in Richer Sounds. Contrast and brightness had been turned down from the maximum settings you usually see in showrooms. I took a few blu-rays in so I could compare easier. It was definately different from my plasma - just a bit here and there that I thought 'ooh, smoke/skin tones/anything else the plazzie struggled with looked really natural.

And no ghosting, or screen burn. I had Teletext on for over 30 mins, which, on my plasma, would have ghosted by then easily.

I've still not decided for certain, but it's looking like the Samsung Series 8 for me.

I don't go to the movies much anymore.... it only disappoints. I wanted to go a BIT bigger, but my wife gave me a flat-out "NO!"

Also, the Bose 7.1 surround helps.

Yeah - the general public are missing out with the usual guff speaker systems. I'm lucky in that I live in a 200-year old cottage, so my Nad amp and AE speakers can knock the pictures off the walls (and they do!), and no one will complain!

Grrr my 7.1 receiver is dead. Still. I've got an extended warranty on it but the insurance company are messing me around royally

I have to deal with crappy TV speakers and I just bought some new Kef floorstanders for the front channels before it broke. They just sit there in the corners of the room looking forlorn

No one seems to understand my pain!!

Crikey, I feel your pain, brother!

If my NAD went belly up and I had to listen to the TV speakers, I'd have to get a hearing aid.

Kef speakers, eh? I looked at a set of those when I was buying my AE floorstanders. To be honest, the price was similar and the sound from both was superb. The AE's won it as they had ?100 off at the time

I have Samsung 61" LED. You can see it behind me in my interview if you look hard I like it but my Sony 60" SXRD has a better picture. Problem with it was its Sony, and I have very very poor track record with Sony products. The Sony 60" had the optical block replaced twice in first year and then it started going bad again the week after the 1 year warranty expired, which is when I went out and got the Samsung.

I have no problems with my Samsung. I am about to get another HD to replace the LG (BLEH) in the bedroom and Im quite sure it will be Samsung.

Kef speakers are fantastic, I got myself some iQ5 special editions, end of line with a discount. The new range have had the prices bumped up, even though the difference in sound is negligible. All in all I saved ?250 compared with buying the new versions

Now if only I had something to power them

You don't even need to look that deep or invest that much. There a great and cost effective LCDs out there. For less than 1000$ you can a full HD Samsung LN42A550 or LN42B550. Those models are having less lag than a Sony set in game mode and the image is right up there with recognised TVsets like the Panasonic Viera series.

I really like my 46" Samsung DLP. It's older (4 years) so I don't get the best picture possible but it's very clear and works for me.2009-09-15 17:38:00

A bit bigger!!!!! My wife plain refused anything bigger than 40". I ordered the 46" when she was out, I did'nt dare get the 52", i thought I'd pushed it enough, but on reflection I should have bought it, it nags me when I know I can go bigger.

Me either, I've had Samsungs since the first HDTV's appeared over here, it was the same model as the ones they used in the first pods, but the 32", I guessed if Microsoft were using them they must be OK. I've had three since and have had no problems at all with any of them.

We looked around when I bought the TV I have now, and the picture quality compared to non-LED sets was worth the extra 400/500 or so in my opinion. Plus it looks nice, and its slim, which is always a bonus thing when persuading a woman.

As for sounds, I've only got 5.1, although it goes to 7.1, from an Onkyo 606. I got an EPOS sub last month, ?600 down to ?200. It rattles the windows and gives your head an weird feeling of pressure at anything above three on the volume, I got in trouble for that one to. I've been looking to upgrade the fronts and rears but it'll have to wait a while. I'd be instrested in what you think of the KEF's once you get them setup rtm or I can take them off your hands until you do .

The only issue I have with new TVs in general is how fast their price drops, after you buy it. I spent $1700 on my LN46A650, and within two months, it had dropped several hundred dollars. They come out with new TVs and drop old ones so fast that it's hard to keep up with what they are releasing.2009-09-15 19:36:00

Tell me about it. I got mine for a discounted $1800 (down from $2400) and within 6 months the price had dropped to around $1100 for the same model. I picked a bad time to buy even though it was in January which they say is the best time to buy a new TV.

We have a 46" Sony XBR6 and love the picture. (It was down to that and a Samsung, so we got the Sony and I got a smaller Samsung for my office area) To me the picture rivaled the best of the best plasma's and not near as pricey. Was looking at a larger size, but the living room of our "pod" (i.e small apartment) would make anything larger almost too huge as we sit pretty close to the screen.

I have a Denon AVR 2809CI that provides really nice 7.1 sound to a full compliment of Paradigm speakers I have been pretty happy with for the $$. To dust the "pod" I simply crank it up and sweep up the remnants.

Tell me about it! My Pioneer Plasma 43" was over ?3000 when I bought it! I could get another car for that!

I was over-excited about my NAD T754, too. You can pick them up now for just over ?400.

I MUST wait for price drops (she says - looking for an LED!).

Well technically yes. They are discussing "LED-backlit LCD TVs", slightly misnamed misnamed as "LED TVs". Obviously someone in marketing didn't think about the confusion this will inevitably cause when actual LED TVs get a good footing...

I keep looking at upgrading but my poor student finances just can't take it. I bought a new laptop for ?800 the other week because I just kept seeing it and wanted it so much. It's only when you buy it and get it home that you think, yes it's prettier and slightly faster than my old one...but is that extra 0.2 seconds it saves me loading up LBPCentral really worth ?800? Well, the answer I've arrived on is no...but unfortunately it is too late!

I have a 32" Sharp at the moment, when I got it about a year ago it was pretty much top of the range, great spec and I got it from a warehouse so was a very good price. Came with 2 year guarantee too, really hoping it breaks soon so I get a refund and can buy a bigger one
