Best flying material? How to make bigger flying objects?

Archive: 6 posts

Hi, I've been messing around in the level editor for the first time and successfully completed a flying saucer with a closing hatch.

The method of flight is when the hatch closes, there is a jetpack in it that when it touches you, gives you one and since the hatch is closed, you can fly in the saucer and it lifts the saucer.

Now here is my question, I originally built it out of cardboard (very light cardboard) and it really wasn't that big. It would not take off the ground...

I changed the material to the pink and orange fluffy stuff and it would take off ok (I wasn't grabbing it when flying)

My question is...how the heck do people make flying things out of cardboard? I've seen much bigger flying contraptions than mine made out of cardboard, yet they flew just fine.

Is there some kind of material I don't have? I'm about 55% through with the game.

Do people use rockets as well to increase propulsion?

Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Normally it would be rockets that propel objects. If you complete the tutorials, you automatically get a basic form of every material, Story Mode just gives you more "skins" for each material. Rockets, floaty material, and occasionally emitters can be used to give objects flight. They can also be on a system of pistons and winches, but that isn't truly flight.2009-09-13 18:13:00

Did you hold X while flying with the jetpack?2009-09-13 20:30:00

You could always used cow-glitched material as well - material that has the property of another material entirely.

Such as metal that has the properties of orange floaty. (same weight, grabbable, etc).

You could get some by searching out the level "50's diner", inputting the code moo9, and then going to the level you get a key for.

Only issue is they're captured objects, so you can't use the corner editor on them. You can reshape them with explosions though. Resize them to be huge, subject them to tiny explosions to carve out the shape you want, and then bring them back down to size.

That would enable you to make enormous objects out of "metal" that have 0 or even "negative weight".

There's other solutions though. Off the top of my head, depending on the layout of your level, you might be able to simply tie said object to orange floaty material much higher above it with invisible strings ... assuming the level is set up in a way to accommodate that without causing any issues.

Did you hold X while flying with the jetpack?

Yeah I hit X.

I'm thinking I might need to put some rockets that fire off on a proximity sensor as the hatch closes as well.

Thanks for the tips. I'm thinking I'll just complete the game first though so I have everything.

EDIT: just added two rockets to my craft that activated on hatch close and it lifted off as cardboard!! YEAH!! Also it is pretty stable...I now am able to bring my first level idea to life. Thanks guys.

Not sure if this is of any use but I have made flying vehicle that controls very well without using the jetpack. All I used was embossed cardboard (green card from MGS pack), pink and peach floaty, two of the MGS missile engines and a bit of logic. Works quite well. If you want to give it a go it's in my level "Rhemora light Fighter Training".

Regarding speeding up the jetpack it's pretty hard to make it go faster than when you hold X.
Also check out johnee's vertigo dropship training, the vertigo is a large chunk of floaty glitched cardboard. It uses the jetpack, but that's only to allow sackboy to control it through the many proximity sensors in the dropship.
