show me the ropes

Archive: 12 posts

Now, i imagine a fair amount of you have seen the grabbable chains/ropes, etc using the thin-thick layer glitch. While cool, i've never really had a need for them.

however, in a level i'm working on, grabbable ropes (or preferrably chains) would be a PERFECT solution to this little section. (yes i like being vague ;p)

However, the ropes that are out there use tiny dots of oval material... which equals a big YIKES! on the thermo! I really can't afford taking up an entire bar for a tiny section of rope i'm afraid ;p And seeing as i lack the thin-thick material to make my own, i'm in a bit of a jam here.

So, does anyone know IF ropes can be made with less thermo (i imagine just a straight line would work fine), and if so, is it possible someone could make some for me? If so, 5 large grid mode squares would be a preferrable length.

Does it have to be grabbable?
Can they zip line across the rope? Or maybe walk on-top of the rope like a French acrobat?

If so you can just use an the really thin, invisible dark matter.

But no... i don't know how to make thermofriendly grabbable rope >.<

I'm kinda confused here... not sure what the question is..
but I used a grabbable rope in one of my levels and I can give it to you if you want it.. is that what you need??

I guess i'm not being very clear again =/ My bad.

Yes, the ropes need to be grabbable, a zip line won't work.

My main question is this:
Do grabbable ropes have to be made with little ovals of thin thick material? Or would a thin line of the same material be sufficient? (as that would be far less taxing on the thermometer)

If they can be made that way, I'm requesting that someone would be kind enough to make one for me (as i have no thin thick material that i can edit)

so you want a grabbable horizontal rope that you can swing across? just make some grabbable material really small and then glue some invisible dark mater to it. Simples. (little meerkat clicky noise)2009-09-12 19:02:00

Okay, but does it work with Thin, thick as well? I don't have any of that material to experiment with, and for what i'm trying to do, thin thick is the only way i can get it to work.2009-09-12 19:12:00

well seeing as you cant make thick thin materials anymore, youll have to get it as a prize from a level. But im not sure if you would be able to corner edit it.2009-09-12 19:13:00

A straight line of invisible grabbable material should do well. It would have a much less vertex count then lots of ovals (I think )2009-09-12 19:22:00

Well sure, seeing that players couldn't walk on it, but still grab it. But if you don't actually have some, then regular material is just as good2009-09-13 00:34:00

Ok ok wait!!
Here are the answers, from experience!!
Yes you can do a small line out of a grabbable material! They WILL be able to walk on it too. Thats how I made the grabbable rope in The Descent 2.
I didn't use no ovals. just a small thick layer..
If you want I'll give it to you, or just make it..
Let me know!
