PS3 Disfunction Dilemma!

Archive: 40 posts

Previously called: PS3 Disfunction Dilemma! then called My Goodbye now back to PS3 Disfunction Dilemma!

Read the first few posts for the story

Yup, its happened to me again. My PS3 has broken

Im really unsure what the cause of this was so thats why i came on here to ask if anyone else has any further info onto what has happened.

The Facts

The system fails to start. Last time i tried to boot it up, the opening PS3 titles froze and glitched.

When it shuts it self down, the solid green light changes to a flashing red there is also a flash of yellow.

I think i have heard of this problem before but im sketchy on the details onto what it really is/does.

I will phone Sony's tech guys tomorrow, its too late now, but i'd like hear if this wonderful community has any useful info on the subject.

If this problem can't be fixed, then im afraid it'll be curtain call for ol' A_Morton. Im in no financial situation at the moment to even think about a new PS3.

(P.S. - My PS3= 60GB v3.00 about 3 years old, has had blu-ray replaced about 1 1/2 years ago)

Is there no way to have it refurbished? Obviously it's not ideal, but it would be cheaper than getting one new?

If you do leave us, you'll be missed!

I duno man, it's all just happened tonight so i have a few options on what to do tomorrow.

Is it Sony who will refurbish it or do i have to go down a dark alleyway and make a deal with the devil?

Same happened to mine last weekend. There is nothing really you can do unless you want to try to repair yourself. (How-to videos (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gliksy+ps3&search_type=&aq=f))2009-09-12 09:16:00

that's what I'm gonna ask my dad to do when mine dies...I'll say him "what do you want, pay 150? for a sony repair, 299? for a slim or around 30? to fix this one?!"

This really is goodbye to LBP. An edit to the title will be made.

Big thanks to everyone at LBPC, you are the true community behind this awesome game.

Your kind reviews on my levels, and just general banter really meant allot to me and i thank each and everyone of you that took a look at what i made.

Thanks Steve

Im not sure about the price of getting it repaired, but repair guys tend to rip you off and i don't want to waste my money on someone who has no guarantee of fixing it.

BUT, the video that Syroc sent me could come in very useful. Me and my Dad are gonna have a go at it next weekend, my dad's got an engineering degree, so, that might come in useful

i think sony costs around ?150 to repair with a 3 month warrenty. it should be half that price if you search the internet for other places.

i hope you do fix it or i wont stop crying

Thats one option, my sisters fiance has recommended a shop that he knows that is very good at sorting out the 'Red ring of death' issue with XBox 360's.

My problem seems to be the same as that only in PS3 form, i just hope it doesn't cost too much.

But first, like Adam said, no harm in trying to fix what is already broke.

All may not be lost!

I actually have 2 options to go for on fixing the PS3.

1. There is a Technology market coming up next Saturday near where i live and they have been known to do what it is your videos shows, professionally and thoroughly. But, of course they will charge, im not sure how much, but likely it will be less than Sony.
But a risk with that is, i give them my PS3 and never see it again! :S

2. Me and my Dad (who has an engineering degree which should come in useful) are going to have a go at fixing it based off video tutorials on Youtube.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Make sure the power is on, so the light is red.
HOLD DOWN the standby button in front of the disc slot, hold it down, it should beep a lot. Keep holding until A) a menu pops up on the screen or B) until you realise you've just wasted a whole day trying to fix it, and you decide this isn't working.

Good luck!

I'd go with 2, If 2 doesn't work take it to option 1 and say you've tryed fixing it and it wont work.

Thanks, i have looked at videos of this in action and im not sure what to select, if i 'Restore PS3 System' does that mean i will lose all of the data on my harddrive, plus reset the PS3 to its default settings?

Because id rather avoid that before trying to fix it myself.

Woah, hold on there, sir. Are you saying it's worked and you've got the menu?
Or you want to know what to do if you do get to the menu?

Hmm...well I'm kinda doing homework now but I'll have a look and try to help.

I can turn on my PS3 no problem, i get the XMB and can sign in....but, the system will gets slower....and slower aanddd slooooower. (framerate drop) and will eventually shut itself down and flash it's little red light.

This process usually takes about 20 seconds.

And, yeah, i just want to know what to do if i get to the menu.

Thanks for jepordising your education to help me

Oh crap...yeah if you mess up it resets your display settings...meaning it might not be sending anything depending on your cables and stuff My experience with that is that if you ever switch from one to another, just hold the button and it will cycle through it's video outputs. I used this when I upgraded from a small TV using VGA to a 46" LCD using HDMI.2009-09-14 21:13:00

If anyone was watching BBC 1 in the last hour, you may have seen the program 'Watchdog.' In this episode, they brought up the YLOD fault with PS3's, Sony admit that there are now over 12,000 reported cases of the YLOD and from my experience, i can only see this number growing.

They also had a van with some basic heating equipment and 2 technicians with a basic knowledge on the PS3, they managed to fix the YLOD problem with 11 consoles handed to them by the public, how much did they charge??

Nothing.

They proved that the YLOD problem can be fixed for nothing and that the Sony ?120 repair cost is just preposterous. They also managed to fix each individual console in about a half hour.

Now, 4 of the consoles were reported back faulty again, but this was due to a broken power supply, not worn out solder connection.

Watchdog said that they will be adding videos to Youtube shortly, i will post them here when i see them.

I feel you bro, the same thing happened to me a few weeks back.

I got a new one but I did have to cancel some subscriptions and save on a whole lot of stuff not to put myself in a tight financial spot.

I've been living on my own for about a year now and with all the costs that come with moving, buying furniture, etc...you don't have that much money to spare in the beginning.

I did get a cool bookstand out of it in the end.

Unfortunately i had to spend most of the money that i had earned over the summer but hey, thats life.

Im not going to go into details but i picked up a brand new PS3 Slim 120GB for....drumroll please...

?120!!!!!!!

Thats ?1 per GB

Anyways heres a big thanks for everyones help in this thread, i really, really helped me out a lot...big time...thanks!

Only problem is i have to collect all objects and such again so i won't be creating for a bit. But im so happy, thats a small price to pay.

Once again;

THANK YOU!

No it was not a free fix those fixers were independent fixers paid by watchdog their fee is something like ?108 for the repairs but this time it was out of the licence fee instead of the owners wallet.
