LittleBigPlanet Demo

Archive: 26 posts

I downloaded it to see if it had anything interesting in it, and surely enough it does. It features a new introduction showing all of it's critical praise, and shows a lot of new videos and a couple different features. For example, I noticed that sticker switches glow in the demo, and passing a different sticker over the switch makes an incorrect sound and the material glows. The video showcasing Create Mode has some different materials and options in the Tools Bag, though it moves to fast for me to catch, hopefully someone will take a video of it in HD so that we can examine it. Did anyone notice anything else interesting about the demo?

Also, I do realize there is this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=15997) thread, but it is more focused around the news of the demo and I figured it would be good to have a discussion thread for it.

It's only out on the European PSN Store so far, but we can hope it will be coming to the US PSN Store soon.

Yeah, I was playing it earlier.
Myself and Dex seem to think it looks better, something about the shading just looks really really nice.

Also the text bubbles animate differently.

I thought the shading (possibly lighting) looked much nicer, and the AA seems to be really improved too!
I also thought the colours seemed much more bright/vibrant

It's hard to say though since i can't make a direct comparison by playing both versions side by side.

Since they both have the first couple levels, someone with an HD Recorder should do a side-by-side comparison, hopefully they will be bringing the updates to LittleBigPlanet through a patch, they look pretty nice.

I also really like some of the mechanics in the intro level.
Those flipper platforms in particular are pretty clever

it's pretty good, but I don't understand why they took 2 community levels which are in my opinion boring.

There are dozens of much better levels out there.

if they picked two they should have picked for example

dinosaur island by feisty frog
little dead space

Those levels are nowhere near being the cream of the crop nowadays. And Little Dead Space, to me, is boring. :/ ... I could never understand why people fell in love with it.

BTW what levels did they include?

Tender Buttes by TangoCharlieESQ and barb_marley's technicolour4 level.

I think they chose those 2 to show a variety of things that could be created.

They're just average every day levels that work well and have a nice atmosphere.
A lot of levels are so good that they make me think "i could never make that what's the point in trying", i think they were trying to avoid that

They probably wanted to show off the mexican theme too, and the other just shows something kind of abstract that couldn't of been made from premade objects.

I did look at the US. Blog entry for the store and today the Demo was added, I assume the 2 levels are the same. Maybe I'll record those level on the full version just for the heck of it.2009-09-11 22:30:00

It's not new, a MediaMolecule employee mentioned that it was a placeholder icon for the Enhancement Remover, also known as the Red X.

WOW! I can't get enough of this demo.

Seriously, if I didn't already own the game, I would be out the door and buying it RIGHT NOW. And even though I do own it, the demo makes me want to rush out and buy a second copy!

This thing is amazing. It's like they somehow managed to distill everything amazing and joyous about this game into its purest form, so that even in such a tiny dose you get a sense of how wonderful this game is.

Most of all I love their new introduction level, which has so much to offer even a seasoned LBP player (and makes up for the somewhat lackluster intro they included in the actual game).

I also noticed a few changes, especially in some of the story levels where they have made things easier for new players - not just drawing more attention to paint switches, like has already been pointed out - but also with more helpful prompts and text bubbles that ensure the player knows where to go and what to do next (eg. at the start of 'Get a Grip' with a new speech bubble explaining how to grab and drag the boxes to scale the wall)

And really, I'm amazed at how generous they've been with this demo, and how much content they've included. I don't know if it will change people's minds about the game or persuade people to buy it if they haven't yet done so, but I really hope it does!

I completely agree, though I was a little saddened when I found out that there wasn't actually any "Create Mode" content for us to play around with. I was looking forward to seeing what was on that "Cow level". The video for Create Mode would definitely attract me into buying LittleBigPlanet if I didn't already have it though. MediaMolecule really did a fantastic job with this demo, and I think that they picked two fantastic, but very diverse, levels.

I noticed something else new, when you go on the scoreboard, the back to planes become blurred, so if you are standing on the very back plane your character is really blurry.2009-09-12 19:20:00

No it doesn't... I've just played all 18 GOTY levels, and not one of them had a blurred scoreboard. Along with the tons of community levels.

I'm sure that there was a slightly different recording of Stephen Fry on the final screen in the introduction.2009-09-13 12:54:00

I agree completely. This has to be the greatest demo I've ever seen for a videogame. Usually a demo is little more than an afterthought. They just throw together a miniscule portion of the game, and then give you a couple of "slides" at the end that basically give you the "back of the box" information - lists of features, review scores, etc.

They created a completely original level, and one that's full of all the charm and character of the game, that gives you all that information, and is a blast to play.

It had a similar effect on me, where I felt like rushing out to buy the game straightaway. Even though I already have it. But it also made me want to spend more time in "play" mode online with a bunch of people. I play this game solo way too much, considering how much of a blast it can be in multiplayer.

Oh! And they showed clips from The Movies!! At like, 3 different points in the demo's video content, you see a little clip from The Movies!! I just about peed my pants when I saw it. I was thrilled as pie. Squealed with joy. Smiled all day. They showed clips from several other of my favorite levels as well.

I actually think the 2 levels they picked to showcase were great choices. Tender Buttes is a fantastic (and hilarious) level, and the Technicolor series is a very simple, very straightforward platformer series that lends itself well to a demo because it's pretty easy to understand what went into it when you play it, and especially having seen the "create" video they include. It's fun, has a very unique style, and is straightforward to boot.

Anyway, awesome awesome demo, and I saw the play list for the two community stages in the thousands, and this stuff wasn't even up in the store when the rest of thursday's content went live, so a bunch of people may not even discover this until next Thursday. so it's great to see that so many people are playing it.

Congratulations! I remember seeing it quite a lot in the demo, and in fact in a lot of different MM videos recently, like the 1,000,000 levels celebration.

Looks like The Movies has truly been accepted by MM into the annals of LBP history, which it completely deserves to be.

I think you're right, when I played the demo I remember seeing the counter saying that there were 58,000 people playing online (which I assume included the demo players).

And I don't think it was the glitch that was displaying unrealistically high numbers, I think there actually were that many joining in for the first time!

I really love this demo! I think it was put together so well, I think we may have a lot more people joining the LBP community now Especially now that the PS3's sales have tripled because of the PS3 slim and also with the GOTY edition. Now I see why they have taken this long to release a demo, it's the perfect time. For some reason I just keep on playing the demo over and over! It just reminds me so much of when I first got the game, it brings back great memories.

I think the community levels that they chose were great! Both very different from each other and both awesome

As for create, I think that they could have improved it by having a sped up movie of creating the level, but then after that, playing the level that you've just watched being made
