Sack Gate: SG1 - prototype

Archive: 15 posts

Not content with my portal, i've decided to take a crack at making a gate choosing device, like a really dumbed down version of how stargate's worked.

right now I'm trying to figure out a way to interlink all of the gates, but it looks as though I'm gonna have to rewire almost the entire thing to get it to do what i want. Has anybody seen anything that sounds similar?

the one I'm working on at the moment has a total of 6 gates, with one being the main hub that has the dialing device on it.

sorry for the rather bland description, but it's like 3 in the morning and i can't sleep. heh.

Burnvictim is working on such a device at the moment. Actually I think he's finished it recently. As I understand it, each one can select any other one to travel to, although I think he has limited it so that you can only visit each location once (for gameplay rather than technical reasons)2009-09-11 09:40:00

I shall have to look into this, then. at the moment I'm building the thing from the ground up, and it is a royal pain to do...

Would be easier if i had an experiment to go by, as i seem to be failtastic at planning out logic.

Yea, i currently have a setup where you can choose your next location. Right now i have 10 locations and a finish (which has no setup to go back to any others). I just set up a tech demo with 6 teleporters, i can give you the prize if you buddy me.

EDIT: heres a link to the showcase thread:

Ok, it's been a while, but i finally got a working prototype going. noting polished, and it has plenty of flaws, but it gets you from point a to point b,c,d,e, or f and back and thats enough to make it worth showing. Its in a level called Dialable Gate Prototype 1. it takes 3 bars of thermo as it is, but i have yet to add the safety that'll keep people from getting killed permanently.

tell me what ya think of it!

nice job there A bit more complicated than mine, but your teleporters are of a much higher caliber. With your setup it looks like you can only teleport from one spot though. I'd be interested to see a Hub level with this.2009-09-17 01:20:00

Thanks! and you are right, it is a one-to-many type of setup. it also has another flaw, in that you can't use more than one group in a level.

Don't we all?

well, now i've got a sackgate level going, but its almost completely empty. its only gonna have 3 "worlds" in it instead of 5 or more, since the thermo isn't gonna co-operate.

its got sack-gate command, a desert world, a tundra world, and a swamp world. you have to collect keys in one world to open the lock in another, and in turn collect the next key to unlock the next gate. problem is that my actual ability to build a level is next to nil. but i'm gonna put up the level as "Sack Gate 1 - prototype" and slowly work on it like i did my tram to nowhere level.

Well this is turning out reasonably well, but i think i may have hit a little snag. You see, I have really got no ideas for the other "worlds" in this thing. What little i added tonight put me just under 50% thermo... and i still have 2 areas to work on and another to finish.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Yes

suggestion #1 - When you're doing more than 1 'extra' world, they better not be too elaborate, otherwise the thermometer will eat you alive.

suggestion #2 - Why not only allow them to travel to one world per level? That way you have more thermo to work with. You could still collect level keys, or stickers, however you want to do it.

suggestion #3 - Watch a few of your favorite episodes for inspiration (I always liked the episode where they meet Thor for the first time)

This is my main problem. I have 3 worlds, but I have very little idea what to do with the 3 themes i've created. By far, the one that I've done the most work on is the "swamp" world, but even that is....lacking.

I haven't even started on the desert level and i still have half a bar of thermo to go. My main problem is that the design on the whole seems so insubstantial. I just wanna make it seem more busy instead of the march back and forth over and over again.

I was thinking of having replicators on the snow level, but i junked that idea cause i would be too picky about the little buggars, I wouldn't rest till the things would seem to fall apart and re-form after a few seconds upon being shot.

mayhaps i'll try putting the wild Goa'uld jumping out at the player or something.....

Replicators would be awesome! If you could make them fall apart, then come back together again, that would be amazing.

Another idea - remember those arm bands that they wore for a couple episodes that made them extremely fast? That would be cool if you could do something with that.. I do know people have been doing 'slow motion' type stuff with their levels, so it is possible.

meh. the replicators are beyond me. I did, however, manage to create a fairly low thermo version of the "rings" that the goa'uld use in their ships. it's actually the most simple of all teh designs i've come up with. still needs spit-shining tho.2009-09-22 07:20:00
