Musical Bananas

Musical Bananassquirlin
A silly survival challenge not unlike musical chairs. 1st published yesterday but I may have jumped the gun a bit because i've tweaked and changed it quite a few times since. I'd like to think its better than it's current 3 star rating but thats me. So anyways give it a play and let me know what you think, I'll be glad to F4F.

The level has a great look and feel to it.

The actual gameplay just doesn't work that well because of the automatic layer jumps. I try to dodge the horizontal energy balls and land on the wrong banana and get zapped.

I also found that you could just stand on the stem of the bananas and walk onto it to collect points and just rinse and repeat. As long as the player timed it right, he could continue forever without much of a challenge.

I have been working on my own survival challenge and am having the same problems of making it possible for the player to play but also impossible to abuse.

You have the look of a great level and now just need to find a way to implement the mechanics so that it can't be abused.

Maybe instead of the bananas being on the ground, they are suspended in the air and only the lit banana stays suspended while the other two tilt or lower into gas or have the energy balls shoot down like you already have. Having them suspended and maybe held in place by invisible string would solve the layer problem.

I'll keep checking out this level because I just love the whole look and vibe.

Custom music/sound effects worked really well too!

Great job!

Thanks for the input, you have given me much to consider. I thought about making the bananas rock more vigorously so that standing on the stems would become a more challenging strategy. I don't mind people doing something like that as long as it doesn't become obviously the most viable option.

I'm definitely with you on the automatic layerjumps- i'd like to work out a way to dodge the banannon lazers that wouldn't occasionally pull you back a plane if you wanted to jump over them.- perhaps if I set the lazers to come at ground level so that mini jumps would work?

And lastly- thanks for the compliments I'm proud of that little tune and how the monkey dances in beat with it. *Do let me know if there is a level you'd like me to f4f

I don't usually like survival challenges. But I love the look of this one.
Very cool design work, dude.

The gameplay is ok, but I didn't really tried to master it ...I also had some problems with automatic layer switching ... but that is common in LBP levels. It adds difficulty but it doesn't make the level unplayable, so I think it is ok.

I've played this one a few times and it's really cute. I really like the colors and the lightheartedness of the style. Then you get to the gameplay part......

As cute as it is and as simple as it sounds - surviving the plasma part is downright hard. I don't mind hard but if your off by even a nanosecond it's plamaville for you. Throw in the lag factor when those emitters start pumping out the bubbles and plasma and it's a very hard challenge to survive.

I do love the concept and the style and your monkey is adorable! The custom music is a nice tough too. Even though I'm not very good at this level I still rate it 4 stars

nice colourful level

I do have to agree with the comments above that it's a hard level.

Maybe it could be made a bit easier?

Did like it though.

simple satisfying concept and level. I liked it i thought that the difficulty was spot on, and the longer you are alive it should get harder. I loved how the glass would just creep out from the side. Custom music was great, i really enjoyed this level. The only improvements i could think of is to mix the environment and location of the bananas. Like if you beat a simple section of the level have the player walk to a different area and make the bananas on multi-level platforms and the player would need to jump to the bananas.

Hi, squirlin

Just played it and loved it. Such a cute one. It looks great and colorful!!! The monkey dance is impressive, dude! it looks like the money are dancing with the music! awesome!

just a few complaint.
The monkey, sometimes, prevents me to jump to the other bananas becuase of its hands. besides jumping to the other bananas, I jumped onto the hands and got thrown away T-T. If that's the game suppose to be it's fine, acceptable. the other thing, the lvl has only one pace. isn't it suppose the get harder or has time limit?

Overall, I feel like it's a must play. so:star::star::star::star::star:+a heart
Awesome job!

Really fun survival!
I really enjoyed it.
I needed 4 plays to catch the grip of how it worked, since I didn't understood that the flashing lights emitted plasma balls.
Anyway, the setting is really well crafted and nicely designed, from the patch of the level to the little monkey stickers on the glass.
Great custom music, very 8 bit-tish and it fits a lot to the level.
Cool change of pace throughout the challenge.
Nothing is out of place.
5 stars, and it's a lot since I don't usually enjoy survival, but this one is addicting.

OMG, I apologize to those of you who I've yet to F4F for giving me feedback on the bananas. There was a point where I figured this thread was burried and I stopped checking to see if it was getting feedback. I plan to make this right, so Morgana, Nightwing, Hollywood234, Sixth, and OmegaSlayer- expect reviews to be coming in from me soon. And thank you OmegaSlayer for sending me a message to wake me up to the situation!2009-10-01 16:06:00

Just wanted to say this is a fun and charming level. I like to end my game sessions with a survival challenge or music level and this is one's perfect .2009-10-01 23:56:00

squirlin - major apologies! I played this last week and didn't know there was a Showcase thread for it. Profuse apologies, mate.

I just played this again. If I could sum it up with one word, it would have to be 'refreshing'! I think most young players will like the cool colours and cartoon nature, and I really hope some older players will get fun elements too.

I enjoyed it immensely - well done.

(PS - No need for any F4F.)
