To separate the picture, when you start the sig, select new instead of open. Then, to insert the main picture, use Open as Layers. This should give you them on separate layers. As for tips, well, that's a very big question. The best tip I can give you is to take advantage of the website gimptalk.com. I learned GIMP completely by doing tutorials on this website.2009-09-11 02:56:00

Have you rearranged the layers? I'm not too sure what you mean. Could you post a picture of it?2009-09-12 04:13:00

Ah, I think I see the problem. First, make sure it has an alpha channel. Right click the layer and select Add Alpha Channel. If you can't click it than it already has one. Now youll have to cut out the white space. You can use the eraser, or select by color, but the best way to do it is using paths.

I won't go into detail on that here, but check gimptalk for tutorials on paths or rendering and you'll surely find something.

Oh, and you can visit sites such as planetrenders.net or gamerenders.com for images that already have transparent backgrounds.
