What is MAG?:
"The game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay.

The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play. The game will contain three factions: S.V.E.R (pronounced Sever), an alliance of war-torn countries; Raven, a futuristic faction with soldiers equipped with carbon-fiber armor and high-tech weaponry; and Valor, a military force with more standard gear.

The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes. Players will be able to customize the face, voice, and armor of their characters, as well as what weapons and kit they carry into battle. The game will be a first-person shooter."

Well I'm not a big fan of FPS, and I just can't imagine this game working all that well. I could very easily imagine the people who are terrible at giving orders but wanting to play a lot being given "positions of command" just because they play more, and then giving terrible or non-existant orders to those under them. The people who would be good at commanding would be frustrated and the ineptitude of these people and either get killed a lot for going on their own in the direction they are suppose to be going, or just give up as the XP gap is too high.

The second Youtube clip was a great example of this. The one time the player that was in the background lasted longer than 30 seconds was when he worked in a team. But it's just so hard to find good team players, too many people like to go their own way and be a hero.

I just can't see anything that counters the idea that if you grind, you lead, but that does not make you a good leader. The few counters I see are giving XP for following orders, and the fact that you get continuously killed if you leave your squad. But it just seems too big a mental gap for me to imagine people to jump. Certainly the people who play a lot should have a handle of the map and know what to do next... but that does not mean they actually will be giving orders or leading properly.

I'm also worried about headset situations. How could someone possibley lead or communicate in a team without a headset? 		2009-09-10 00:59:00

I also thought about that Headset situation.
But the answer is pretty much the squad leader. As long as your within objective, it will be fine.

Also, If you really want good team and suck, anyone wanna consider making a LBPC clan for MAG? That would be sweet.		2009-09-10 01:11:00

Being in the closed beta I found that it really is not that crazy or hard to play just do what the objectives tells you to and you will do fine. I'm not sure if I'm still under the NDA so I guess I cant say too much but there is no lag and once you get a good squad leader or platoon leader it only gets better.

I would be up for joining a clan though every time we try doing that here it seems to not work		2009-09-15 16:19:00

I got a beta key. Not too enamoured with the massive update though. Genuinely going to take 6 or 7 hours to get through it all. I've missed the 5pm-8pm window and may well miss the 12am-3am as well depending on the speed of the download.2009-09-21 19:53:00

i got into the beta and have downloaded everything, first time i loaded it (not to play a match) it worked fine, but i had to go before i had chance to play a match.
But now, I load it, after about 20 seconds, it freezes my ps3.

As for the people complaining about the update sizes. . get a bigger HDD?

If you have the new slim then you have 120GB's so you really shouldn't be worried at all about a game giving you a few GB's. Or if you're someone like me with a custom HDD (mines 300 GB's) then you reaaally shouldn't be worried at all about a few GB's.

Anyway, it was more about the time it took to download (6 hours for me) rather than the size of the file.

You sir, need to get some better internet. Lol

And if you continued to read what I said you would never have to get a new HDD solely because of a little 2GB update, unless you only have 1GB of space left.

But if you did it wouldn't be that big of a deal. They're cheap (like say 40 to 50 bucks) and loaded with space. It also literally takes only like 5 minutes to replace your old HDD with a new one once you've gotten your new HDD and have put your old HDD's data somewhere else (so you can transfer it to the new HDD later).

P.S. If it really takes that long I would definitely do it over night.		2009-09-23 00:34:00

Well the beta looks much worse than the screenshots show, but the final game is hopefully going to look gorgeous.

I once read that MAG stood for Massive Action Game somewhere, then forgot it, and then I found this thread! Thank you!

I will certainly by this game, as long as the score on metacritic is over 80, but I think it will pass that test.

Think about playing with 255 other people through the internet, that would be just SO awesome.

I see some downs, what would happen if the whole game started to lag?

As far as I know, the graphics have been scaled down to fit the code into the download and but will be better on the disc. They are pretty poor in the beta though. They look last-gen.		2009-09-23 17:50:00
