Mythicos 2: Symphony of Sorrow (2 of 2)poorjack
This is the 3rd installment of the "Mythicos" series, and is just as impressive as the first 2. It is an action platformer with very heavy dialogue.

It is 3 in the morning, and Leo cannot sleep. He is restless over the idea of killing the King of all Goblins. What if he can't do it? Then what? And what of poor Rose? And the rest of the Elves? Tis is the burden of a young Elf.

This is the second chapter of the second book of "Mythicos" an epic tale of Elves, Goblins, magic, and the Meaning of us all. I do hope you enjoy, as it has taken me a long, long time to write out every detail of the Mythicos storyline and I hope you enjoy as the series grows, twists, turns, and comes to a conclusion.

Any one who gives me an HONEST REVIEW including a brief description of your game experience, any complaints/compliments, AND a star rating out of 5 will recieve a similar rating to one of their levels by me. Thank you.

I played through this level this morning and was very impressed. The level set design, lighting, character models and story is all very well done and I?m looking forward to playing through the entire series to catch up on the story as well as to see more of your levels.

This level has some very good architectural features from the columns to the lever superstructure to the different decorative elements. Though the worlds doesn?t look blocky it incorporates straight, clean lines throughout with appeals to my logical, ordered tastes.

I was happy to play through the level as it is very clear that you?ve done a lot of work, paid a lot of attention to detail and the whole experience worked smoothly from start to finish without any bugs, awkward sections or un-clear directives.

--I do see a floating bit of dark matter that may be holding up a set of lights just above and to the right when you stand on the topmost arch in the section where there are three arches in one structure. This isn?t a very good description but I can give better directions later now that I know the general layout of the level on a later playthrough.

--There is a darkened section just past the ?death pit? that seems to have nothing in it. I haven?t done the race option on the level so possibly this is used then but otherwise I?m not sure what this section of the level is for. Generally I?m happy when creators make level features or locations that are not directly tied to the path from A ? Z but as everything in the level before and past this is very linear I?m guessing that there may some importance to this dark area.

I think you?ve done a good job delineating the different zones/environments in the level through the building materials, the lighting and the music/SFX. The transitions are all fairly clean and enhance the ambiance of each section well. The use of the sconces, spot and area lighting is all well done.

Your character models are well done and easy to identify though I was a bit put aback by the size of the two goblins during the cut-scene in the second act of the level. Either it is an optical illusion or is really is this way but it looks like the two goblin models are actually very large in reference to the level itself. This probably makes it easy to create detailed character models while still having a close shot of each but my initial reaction was something along the lines of, ?Wow! Those guys are huge!? This isn?t a bad point to the level but a funny reaction on my part I thought.

I also enjoy your use of camera zones to depict the level from different angles depending on where the emphasis or action is. Cinematic camera zones can be misused or overlooked but you?ve done a good job. I also like your stickering of the level, you?ve done a great job breaking up the visual use of the same material used over and over in certain areas of the level.

The story is the driving force behind the level and it seems to be fairly deep and involved. Jumping into this series from this level rather from the beginning has me at a disadvantage as I often got confused just who was talking and what their significance was but I hope to rectify that presently. The story development is also moving in some unsuspected directions and reminded me a bit of my play experiences in Phantasy Star III.

I like that you pay attention to the morality of the character?s actions and examining the consequences of events on the protagonist. This adds a layer of depth to the level and story that is quite mature.

I see that the top scores on the scoreboard are many times my score when I finished though I collected every bubble I found and aced the level so I suspect that during the race option there will be more opportunities to get points. (More than just the race gate that is.)

Good work on this level. I?m looking forward to playing through the remaining Mythicos levels and seeing where you take the story.

thats the best review ive ever recieved, and ive never heard my story called "mature" before! thank you very much!

I think that the character and traits you've created in the protagonist shows maturity. Many people do not seem to equate the killing of others with feelings of regret, sorry or doubt.

I think this is in large part to people not personalizing the victims or victim's families either through self-defense or from de-sensitivity to violence received from numerous outlets.

Being able to see people as more than objects shows a bit a far more mature sense of humanity in my opinion.

The plot and plot elements may be straight fantasy, sci-fi or any of a few other sub-genres but that doesn't mean that the characters have to be stereotypes or paper thin.

I'll be playing and posting my feedback on the remaining Mythicos levels mostly to see what you've done and partially to get your feedback on my current level.

Cheers.

well, this is all story ive had figured out and written for a long time. its all completed, and the characters are well thought out. I like to take my life experiences and personal feelings and apply then to the characters in the mythology. i feel it makes for more believable interplay.2009-09-11 01:28:00

Hi jack!
I always liked your level, even if I hated some of the camera usage, like I pointed out in the respective threads.
I liked this one a lot, until the twist in the story.
That's not about the quality of the twist, it's about the visual style...it got very bland, aseptyc and unpersonnal.

Spoiler only for who has played the level
White Hi-Tech Labs are really overabused and they're all the same, and they're really starting to get really boring and repetitive IMHO

You still put some awesome touches here and there like the magic mouths, they're really brilliant.

Anyway, the level is still a 5 stars, but you really can do better.

this level was really great. the combination of materials, the intricate attention to detail, artistic use of lighting, all worked together to create an atmosphere that was really stunning. the gameplay was also very good; not too hard or too easy.

here are a few things i thought could make it even better:

while playing this level, i forgot what the initial objective was for leo. i went back and played part 1 to remember. there was no mention of rose except for one small part at the beginning of this level. maybe there would be some way to work her into the dialogue a couple more times throughout the level?

i also thought it seemed very easy for leo to find and get into the "pit". it just seemed like it should be harder to find, or have more obstacles in the way to get to it, if jerrith really did not want him to find it.

those are the only two things i could think of. really just a brilliant level. :star::star::star::star::star: and "brilliant".

if you have a chance, would appreciate F4F on my level "Dog Bone Mystery". thanks.

you are right, rose should be mentioned more. but i didnt add more talkey bits because people were complaining that Myticos was very boring and too story driven. I think you will find that mythicos 3 has myuch less talk, and is more focused on story driven gameplay.2009-09-14 07:51:00

Very good level, I played it and really enjoyed it.

The alien twist, didn't see that one coming

I really liked the look and feel of all parts in the level.
The beginning was beautiful and reminded me of a god of war level, while the last part was a real sci fi level and here as well everything felt in place.

Good job on the visuals!

I would have liked some more jumping and puzzles because now there was story but not so much gameplay.

The look of the evil butler thingy and the demon like creature was very good (I didn't play the other parts yet because wanted to see the last one first)

try to add more gameplay in the 3rd installment though

if you want you can post a request for review in my review section as soon as the 3rd part is up (because I wanted to review that one but couldn't find it yet)

F4F you can pick one of my best levels in my subject , thanks !

Pros
I can tell it looks great!!! No doubt about it.
Sound effects are fine-tuned
great lightings
Info monsters look awesome!!!

Cons
Dangerous creatures need works. The lvl look awesome but these creatures are kinda disappointed. If you can make them more attractive like other elements, it will be awesome.
This lvl is more like focusing on story telling. Gameplay and obstacles are blend

Overall,
not sure how to rate yours. I really enjoyed The first half and gave it 5 stars, but the second half is not that good.
let's do this :star::star::star::star: +
