Best way to make a door?

Archive: 17 posts

I am currious as to how the lot of you make your doors. Going through online levels I have seen a variety of ways just to make a door that goes up and down.

How do you make your doors?

There are about four thousand ways of doing, here is one:

Instead of a winch you can use a piston.

Well thanks for the link, but I just meant this as more of a tip sharing tool.

Like on a level I am working on right now, I am using a switch to desolve the doors and the like. I just want to see what people like.

I see. Well that basically how I make a door. Block of one material that can pulled up or lowered with a piston.

Or you pull a block into hole the player can walk on.

Use a wobble bolt to have it act like a draw bridge. Same can be done with just a bolt a piston/winch.

Doors opening sideways work exactly the same. as the first mentioned

In other words I used many ways. What ever fits best in the situation.

I do it however i feel like it at the time I actually made a few prize doors in my level "doors" (great title- eh? ) that i just fooled around and had fun making.2009-09-08 20:02:00

Sometimes I just leave door ways empty, without doors, and other times, I like to have a door of dissolve, hooked up to a proximity switch, and an emitter. When the player gets near it, the door in the doorway dissolves, and I emit another door, facing the opposite direction, so it looks as if the door opened.

You can also swap the proximity switch for a grab.

i think that there are way too many ways to make doors D:
personally, i prefer the piston method. its the easiest, imo.

but i find it interesting to see the random ways other people make their doors. just experiment until you find the way that you think is best.

I've found the paintenator quite useful for some doors. I create a block attached by a bolt at the top and then make it electrified or on fire and you have to shoot the door to make it swing, then run under it and try not to touch the door. A bit different to the normal methods and a bit more fun!2009-09-08 21:12:00

I find it interesting too. This is why I asked. I am a person that likes to tinker with things and LBP is like a godsend and a curse at the same time. I can tinker all I want with machines and the like, but at the same time I will never have a chance to try everyhing out.2009-09-08 21:13:00

I'm using a long rectangle with a wobble bolt on the end hooked up to a perma-switch for my new sewer level. The door can either swing up or down.2009-09-09 02:36:00

Well, I usually have my doors open using pistons for the left and right doors and a proximity switch. Really, it's the standard.

Not discounting any of your methods, though. Good on you!

I sometime make doors out of light material (like cardboard) and just have the player push through it 2009-09-09 12:46:00

What you want is around 7 or 8 interlocking moving parts, which have to then open in a timed sequence (multiple stages). You will want that to then close up again, preferably in the reverse order of the opening sequence, or even better, a completely different order, but the interlock still works. Then add sounds. That's the best way.

Just ditch the sounds and have magic mouths saying "shhhhhwwwiiii", "wwwuuuuuaaaaa-wu-wu-wu", "k-cshhh" and "DOONK". That should do it.... how much fun could you have with a smapler just doing all the sound effects for your level vocally 2009-09-09 14:27:00
