What would you consider to be your best level?

Archive: 33 posts

and if you can't answer that...what would you consider to be your favourite level you've created?

and if you can answer both...are they different, if so, why?

I'd actually say, honestly, my clubhouse.
I have made 2 levels since but the first had severe thermo problems and there was a lot I wanted to do with the second that I didn't.
With my clubhouse I was getting loads of really good comments and messages about it...even after the results were announced

My favorite is Sack's In The City. I really felt inspired doing it and it was the best fun i've had figuring out how to do some stuff and tweaking some. At the time, the level was also a breakthrough in the different genres of levels we've seen before in the community. It's the level I feel the more "attached" too.

Mine would have to be Sheriff Sack even though it didn't get much recognition and even got moderated for some unknown reason.

Strangely my Arabian Adventure level was Spotlighted even though I considered that one far inferior to Sheriff Sack.

Hah, okay here we go.

Warning the following may look like shameless self promotion and bragging. It's not intended to be that!

What is my best level? Well, what isn't my best level? Which one never was my best level? With each and every level I created I thought this is my best level yet. That gives me something to look forward to when I create a new level; knowing that that what I'm building right now will most likely be my best level ever.
Going back to my very first level (the name of which I can't recall right now) I'm pretty sure I thought something a long the lines of "Well, this isn't too bad. Bad I can do better" so I went off to create my next level called Under Construction. When I almost had that finished I thought "Wow, this is amazing.". However the thought soon disappeared. Why? It failed to load. I was frustrated. So frustrated that I immediately started a new level, which really was miles better than the previous one. (Here (http://www.eurogamer.de/videos/exklusiv_littlebigplanet_operation-sackeater) it is if you want to have a look or you can play it in LBP)
Now the first beta ended, cue me waiting a month or however long it took for the game to be released. As soon as I could I started building Snowys Little Adventure. (Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdpbQ6WGEYE)) With that level I wasn't 100% happy, but I thought it was pretty nice considering the time it took me to build it. That level is however the answer to your second question. I don't why but that is my favourite level. It has a thousand little flaws but I like it nonetheless.
My next level was lost temple, which again had a few flaws and is ultimately too short, but people loved it (well my friends did and that is all what counts ) so I loved it.
After this I build "One Night in Africa", which is the only level that is not playable anymore because I wasn't really happy with it. Or to be honest I was quite happy with it until I published it and got about a hundred complains about the darkness of the levels and people getting stuck. I tried to fix it but during that process it broke completely and I think I have banished it from my moon.
And now finally sometime around Christmas 08 we come to the level that I really, really like and would count to my best levels. All for very different reasons.
First there was Japanese Garden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W8Epto3cuQ). I wasn't very happy with it when I published it, but it was picked by MM. That was of course awesome for me, especially since I didn't consider it to be that good, so that level has a special place secured. I think I went back to it a few month after I published ToS1 to make some improvements and after I made those improvement I felt like the MM pick was justified. I really like that level now. You can have fun in it if you play on your own and should you a friend a long you go a completely different path which I thought and still think is pretty cool.So I like that level because of it's adaptability and because of the theme.

...

/reads back

Oh, I think I should be a bit more brief

ToS - Love it because of the theme. Love Arabic (and Japanese) architecture.
ToS2 - That was a pain to create. I changed things around so often, added new bits deleted several equally "complicated" bosses because they either looked horrible or weren't much fun. Still don't think it's the most beautiful level, but I'm very proud of the boss.
And it's my second level to be picked by MM. Shhhhh.

And last but not least "A Journey". Of all the levels I made I'm most proud of this one, because this is the first time I spend so much attention to the environment, the lighting and the atmosphere (light, sound and music). I'm genuinely proud of that I managed to stick with it over the month I worked on it, because let me tell you cutting out rocks isn't the most fun you can have especially if each outcrop is in a way deliberately made the way it is.
If there had been an outsider watching me cut out those rocks, seen me doing that for hours on end he'd probably though I had gone mad or a severe case of OCD (No offense to those that really have it).
I'm 100% happy with the way it looks and currently don't see any need to make any visual improvements. (Unless we get some new materials.)
The only thing that I would loved to make better is the gameplay, specifically original gameplay. There isn't much of that in "A Journey".

So to re-cap and to give the tl;dr crowd a short version of the long drivel above; every time I publish a new level I think it's my best level, my favourite level is "Snowy's Little Adventure" for unknown reasons.

I love all my levels and I'm proud of all of them no matter how dated they are by now.

Now my next level would have been awesome, of that I'm sure. Want I had in mind was to combine the gameplay of Japanese Garden with the visuals of A Journey, add a little bit more gameplay to it and tone down the OCD a bit regarding the visuals. Then give it all a good shake et voila a new best level. Alas, it will never be.

The Adventurer's Guild.

... It's just not unlocked yet ... like any of my stuff save my "demo". It's my favorite thing I've done though.

The Crystal Cave in Autumn is hands down my favorite level I've done. If you took my personality and rolled it up into one level, it would be that one! Crystals, ghosts, kappas, old scary houses in the woods, a cat and the season of autumn! All my favorite things! ^_^2009-09-08 00:32:00

Mine would have to be Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge because it's my most played, and I spent a ton of work on it! I still go back every once and a while to play it and beat the highscores.2009-09-08 00:40:00

00Sack - Betrayed for me. I am nearly finished with the sequel (in two parts), but I really don't think either one holds up to the original. Somewhere, I found inspiration during that creation. Then I went into a serious creator's block, and when I came through on the other side, I had hoped for even greater things. But I can't seem to find that same spark. Don't get me wrong, these new levels aren't bad... they just aren't Betrayed.2009-09-08 00:40:00

Probably still Splat Invaders Saga.... I was really inspired with that one, laughing pretty much all the way through creating it.

After that I more started experimenting with gameplay ideas (although I still LOVE playing Vertigo! - I just don't think that many people will put the time into a game like that to appreciate it).

The one I am currently working on ^^

If the level I work on isn't better than the one I did before, I know that I'm not doing my job.

Brain Chain Mini-Game: Survival Challenge

Even though I made it and have played it way too many times in testing, I still feel like it's one of the most addicting levels out there. I'm not begging for plays, as it has plenty of those, but if you haven't checked it out, give it a go.

In fact, I'd really like to make a sequel with different stages of difficulty than what the original version has, but I've got too much else going on.... someday, though.

I think my BEST level is Pandamonium 2, it's the last level I published and I think it's alright, but my FAVORITE level is my first level, LittleBigGlacier. I don't know, it just feels so nostalgic to me.2009-09-08 05:30:00

Mines Teamwo2k! because I only have 2 levels out.
But it is good
GO PLAY IT NAO!!!!!! joke
Only play if you want to. I'm satisfied.

But my new level I working on.... is looking superior. I have to try harder for this one. With visuals. Teamwork was a sort of toy box land style.. built of lego....
But this one is actually like a proper looking level if you know what I mean so I hope this one will do better. I think it will be better. (not boasting)

Eddy Mitter for me. for my other levels, I picked a theme and made some platforming to fit that theme. but with Eddy, I came up with an idea that I liked and because he was my creation, I could do what I liked.

I loved making it simply because I was so inspired from the outset. many of the original ideas fell away, but many more appeared in their place.

one of the reasons I haven't made anything since, other than adjustments to existing levels is that I haven't since felt that buzz I felt when the idea came into my head.

People tell me that my best is Clockworx (or at least the one I previously thought was best was Spiralizer, but people have told me that Clockworx is better). Not bad for saying it only took me three days to make.

But my favourite has to be my GOTY level. I'm so annoyed that not everyone will be able to play it. The Spiralizer has always been one of my favourites, and this one is similar but much, much better.

My favourite is 'Escape From the Death Star' because it has nearly all my favorite jokes. And the Garbage Crusher of Doom.

My best in terms of aesthetics, play, technical gubbins and story is probably 'Dagobah'.

Hmm hard question:

I like the PTD because of the boss battles and due to its complexity (probs my most complex level!)

I also like MYST because i was so pleased i managed to recreate the whole game!

But, i think my best series and the one im most well known for is Whichever Way the Wind Blows...

Therefore i will have a choice from one of the three levels in the series... and from this, my favourite is probably the RED one. Although i do prefer the boss in GOLD, i really enjoyed playing with the layer glitch and creating my own background.

This is a great thread. Someone should compile a list from these posts (this means you, Jack ) - a Creator's Showcase of sorts... Kinda like the Directors Cut. Just a thought. 2009-09-08 18:45:00

Yes, good thread.

For me, the favourite level of mine is Hyper Cube Frenzy. After spending over three months on the Hyper Cube levels, I was comfortable enough that I could build it with enjoyment, and it was really great that members of the community chose which rooms they wanted to appear. This level was also the first one I submitted into the Level Showcase, and I was elated when it was spotlighted. I still play it, too.

As to my best level, I don't really know

Well I guess I should probably have a few words on this. The reason I started this thread was because I actually haven't a clue what my best level is, and I was just wondering whether anyone else was in the same position.

My favourite level is probably Calamity Construction. I think I love it because the theme was so specific compared to my other levels. Having such a narrow scope for ideas restricted me a lot more, yet I still managed to get it exactly how I wanted. I just love the fact that the things in it are 'real' and not just made up obstacles and shapes, and yet they do their job as obstacles really well.

From a creating point of few, I probably had the most fun creating either Flaming Timberland 2 or Calamity Construction.

Flaming Timberland 2 because this was the first level where I really tried some crazy/cool contraptions, and seeing as how I had only just got a good grasp of the tools back then, when you get something right, my god it feels good! Whereas now if I get something right I don't have that rush of 'woohoo' because I knew I was able to do it anyway.

I loved creating Calamity Construction for similar reasons to why I love the level in general. The items are so real and tangible. Everyone knows what a crane, dump truck, and steam roller look like etc. So it's great to be able to create them and say 'yeah, they look just like I wanted', and then have that added factor of them actually having a purpose in the level in regards to platforming and obstacles too.

What's my best level....I have no idea...what do you think?

I personally thought Flaming Timberland 2 was your best - some of the mechanics you used to shift and move the floors around gave me a number of "wow... THAT was cool." moments.... almost like a thrill ride.

I also really enjoyed Calamity Construction, but if I had to choose between the two, it would be FT2.

I only have 2 serious levels, so I'd say my best one (read: awful) is the my "Cloud adventure" level.
I enjoyed messing around making all kinds of different clouds
and then the "darker" settings made me enjoy it even more.
