Back to the Basics! Round 2 ended!

Archive: 115 posts

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/9579/b2bm.jpg

After the huge success that was round 1. Round 2 starts today and it is bigger and better than ever before. Well, okay that's easy giving that round one had zero participating levels. :-)

The mission: Create a level!

Rules:

1. Every switch must be visible. Whether it's a standard switch, a custom made switch or a logic gate, you are not allowed to hide it. They need to be in plain sight.

2. Everything else must be visible as well. No hidden emitters, no invisible pistons, no invisible robes and of course no invisible materials. Exception: Magic mouths and speakers.

3. You may not use any DLC objects, that includes stickers, materials, the paint switch and plasma balls.
The only exception are the things found in the Creator Pack 1 ie. the unlimited life checkpoint.

The criteria of judgement:

- Playability
- Fun

And of course the design and how well you have managed to incorporate the switches. The more integrated they are the better. A AND/OR switch that is part of the environment is better than the same switch that floats in mid air. So be creative, think about logical ways of implementing the logic into your design.

Note: Ugly levels are acceptable of course and may have a chance to win but the judges may be slightly biased towards good looking levels whether they admit it or not.

The aim: To help people understand how switches and logic mechanisms work and how they effect a level.

Deadline: New moon of October. That is the 18th of October.

The Prize:
1. 500xp
2. 250xp
3. 100xp

Have fun! And be creative, imaginative, resourceful, inventive, ingenious, original!

I would also like to judge, as I don't think I'll be able to make a level in time.

We may have one inadvertant entry already. Assuming he decides to stop by, Hallm3 made a concise little level with completely visible logic. There's a thread in the showcase.

If he enters, then you shouldn't feel bad about having started your level, BSprague.

-----

Can I make one suggestion? Invisible speakers and magic mouths. We are at a disadvantage to MM in that their magic mouths can be very long. It looks tacky to have multiple mouths right next to each other. Also, there's really no advantage to being able to see the speakers. Music changes are fine, but the speakers would feel weird in my opinion.

Good point, comphermc. I'll add that to the first post cause as you said it is pretty obvious that a speaker or magic mouth is active.

You two will be the the last two judges.

On the subject of magic mouths and speakers, especially the latter:

I would like to see people try to incorporate them into the aesthetics in some fashon. Obviously you can hide them as per the rules, but the more that's visible (and incorporated in a clever way) the better This is, after all, the essense of the competition.

Also, who else wants to enter this fabulous competition? C'mon!

Yeah - I'm in... have a pretty good start.

I have one question on the rules. I understand everything must be visible, but does that include things that might naturally be hidden? Take, for instance, the meerkats in the Story levels. We never actually see their pistons, though we all know they are popping up out of the ground on them. Just curious...

Oh, I honestly hadn't considered that. What I would say is that the mechanisms for doors and the like should be visible, but for something non-substantial like bouncing meerkats it's not necessary that you see the piston, as long as you see the switch(es) that activate them.

It's not really about us, (those that create all the time) but rather about those that would like to create but have trouble understanding the basics.

I have a question about the rules. It says no invisible materials. I've realized that I am using very small (hence invisible) dark matter in several places. It's just become such habit. Will this be allowed? Do I need to go in a change all of these?

Guess I should have read the rules more closely before I started. lol

keep on tweaking. Rebuild stuff, take your time. If you feel you've rushed then there is room of improvement. Obviously there is no pressure to change it if you don't want to, but if you would have spent more time on it and feel you could have done better, then here's your chance.

Plus if you say your sad because of this competition, then you're gonna make syroc cry, and he's a really nice guy y'know. You don't wana make syroc cry do you?

Seriously though, I'm probably gonna play through the current entries in the next couple of days, but I'll withold any kind of judgement till after the deadline, so do feel free to improve and tinker

ARRRRRGH I really want the level out by saturday but i think it might draw into next saturday till i get it out. I'm happy with it so far but *Sigh* i'm spending too much time on the screan i'm going to go blind.

Great about ghostriders entry i like that level well "BETA" i would really like to see it in B2B but i think he should do the gardens i fell its a better level really and he wouldn't have to change much.

I'm really looking forward to the finish of this competition but i may not enter the next one lol. RL getting in the way

Maybe. I'm not sure yet. The problem with a competition like this is that making levels takes time and many creators are always building on their own projects.

As rtm just said while I was typing if there is enough interest there may be another round.

Not sure. What do you all think?
If we'd stick to the theme there would be no stickers of course.

I'd be happy with just the 8 materials. Decorations could, of course, be made out of emitters etc. if necessary. However, I think the rule should be no levels like "Cardboard World!" or "Rubber Madness!"2009-11-04 16:19:00

Yeah, more than one material will definitely be a rule.2009-11-04 16:28:00

Fine, as long as they are effective. Not just dark matter and dissolve for switches and cardboard for everything else. Nothing against cardboard, or single material levels, but that's not very creative. 2009-11-04 18:35:00

Already done the 3 material level. Have you forgotten the Sackcast 'Gadders trial' that my 'PLASMAVILLE' level won.

I'd like to see something with the newer DLC materials such as the ones from the Monster and History packs. I haven't really seen any of those used to good effect yet even though we've had them for ages now.

This is the first time I've heard of it (level and contest) to be honest.

That we can do in the next if there is one. But it won't be fair to limit it to DLC material because some people are bound to complain about that.

It was a contest to make a level using only dark matter, basic cardboard and dissolve. That included everything offscreen too including all switches. Can't believe you never heard of it. Don't you listen to the podcasts?2009-11-04 18:57:00

I do, but I don't really care about contests. And what I don't care about won't be remembered. 2009-11-04 19:03:00

to limit it to DLC material ...

Would simply undermine the "back to basics"-ness of the entire contest.

?

Also, I don't like the sound of 3 materials. I say, basic 8.

Yes, of course all eight. I never said it would be limited to three. 2009-11-04 22:34:00
