THE TRIBE: Part 2 ***SPOTLIGHTE*******

THE TRIBE: PART 2Phife24
Picking up immediately after Part One, you're on the run from the tribe and looking for an escape. As you tread deeper into the tribe's territory, your chances of survival dim...
all
(Will post pictures shortly)

This level was designed to play out like an action movie. After the first level's jaunt through the outskirts of the tribe's camp, this takes the player to the middle of their ruined city, a deadly fishing village, the hazy treetops, soaring towers, all leading up to a final mountaintop confrontation. I've cranked up the wattage on this one considerably, and I hope it feels bigger, better, and badder than the first!

It took two months and a lot of work. Hope you enjoy it!

Really amazing level. Lots of new things that I haven't seen before which is a feat in it's own right considering how much I play LBP. Everything has so much detail from the spear guys, piranha, to the level itself. The flaming hands were very cool and I think it was a good idea to keep them as just a visual piece of the level. The tower leaning to it's side and having to climb it that way was really creative on your part.

The best section was the boss. Totally unlike anything I have seen before. I didn't even know you could catch flying bombs. The way that battle plays out is so much better than the typical "paintanator/plasma ball" boss battles.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart from me.

Very awsome...
I like the way you used the 3D glitch.
The final boss was also epic.

I gave it 5 stars and hearted!

thanks for the feedback, keell - I made updates to the level based on your other suggestions.

I figured out you could catch bombs completely by accident. The helicopter was going to supply them (stationary), but they kept falling out of the hull - I realized you could catch them at the right speed and angle

EDIT: I also owe JRange378 a big thanks for the boss. I had it setup much differently at the beginning but he gave me feedback on some changes and we discussed an idea similar to the final version. He had suggested smoke indicators where the missile would target, but unfortunately that was beyond my capability. Luckily the bomb concept seems to be fun for players.

Okay just got through it for the second time with Phife, and I am proud to announce that we now hold the top two player score. (Take that MrVista)

Anyways, it's even better the second time through, you mentioned how you meant for it to feel like an action movie, and you absolutely achieved that, as the level never slowed down. Everything looks absolutely amazing, and the use of the Bakscratch glitch gave the level an amazing sense of scope that even the best of creators struggle with. The towers swaying as you are barraged with attacks by the tribe, the boss fight, it all felt so dynamic and real, and the environmental puzzles in the torture tower were simply great.

And the boss fight, probably the best in LBP. There are multiple strategies to bring the bombs into the main part of the robot, and the actual catching of the bombs is a great mechanic.

Anyways, a brilliant level, and five stars on all accounts.

I played the beta version of the level so I were quite acquainted to the level, it was already good but with some minor hiccups, but Phife managed to get everything ultra smooth.
The level has astonishing visuals, great gameplay, an impressive story with a real unexpected twist.
5 stars and a heart!

Wow, amazing level! The opening sequence was perfect - it was extremely powerful.
Great gameplay, great feel, and great boss. Definitely one of the best LBP levels I've ever played.

Just a couple glitches I found:
1) I have no idea if this is something easily recreated, but in the room where the spikes are falling from the roof, for some reason the door was cracked open and I was able to leave the room (I actually then popped myself so I would go back in the room and play it properly ).

2) When you're on the big tree and it says "I'm gonna have to keep climbing" or something, and there's some orange striped thing to your left, somewhere around there I was able to drop down to land on top of the house with the roof of spikes.

Anyways, I loved it. I want to play it again! 5 stars and a heart.

EDIT: One more comment I forgot: I felt the boss lacked a lot of the tension a boss should have, because it was infinite lives. In my opinion you should give two double-life checkpoints for the boss. If someone DID lose, you're level is good enough that I think they'd play again.

Fantastic level Phife!

I had a great time playing it - there's a ton of different things to do, you put in loads of nice touches, and visually i found it really interesting, so just top stuff all round! : )

Glad you folks liked it!

@ hilightnotes : that door thing is new, but I did recreate the dropdown part in the trees - that's the one spot w no gas will fix both soon

@ julesyjules - not to rush you...but when's Jabbas Palace coming out?? I'm really looking forward to that one.

Darn you Trevor, I'll have to have another go now and try and get that top spot back LOL.

Epic level Phife. I wouldn't have a clue how to do most of that stuff.

New updates to issues:

-added gas under the tree where you can fall off
-added dark matter behind spike room so you can fall to floor
-moved some emitters in final tower to make it a little more friendly for multiplayer (still can have issues if everyone is spread out)
-made the spear guy w/ some heavier materials to limit barrel rolling
-added a few more point bubbles that my thermometer accomodated
-a bunch of other minor playability issues

Thanks for the info, let me know if there are other issues you find!

I replayed part 1 right before this one and you really did crank it up. Epic was the word going through my mind when playing. So many breathtaking scenes and incredible detail. The camera following the arrow was startling. Perfectly challenging gameplay, never easy and never frustratingly difficult. I really enjoyed the lift puzzle. Not to mention the thrilling boss fight. Stunning design, the extra layers have never been put to better use. One of the best levels ever.

A monumental accomplishment. Think you can top this?

Played this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, most of it. The sections with the giant demon grabbing buildings were fantastic, really inspiring and overall the gameplay was very fun. Visually pleasing to boot.

I really liked the puzzle with the objects you drop into the hopper then jump out then let then out again. I messed it up the first time, which was funny because it was one of those "d'oh" moments when I know it's completely my fault.

I had a few negative points to bring up as well though. Firstly the guys with the spears having gas at their feet seemed a little off - I do get why, but it just seemed odd that walking near a guy with a spear kills me...

The slanty room near the end really did my nut in - mostly because I got it wrong though. I messed up going the right way, so started looking around and it looks like there is a route up on the left hand chandelier to a block of wood in the corner and then a beam at the back. There is some random gas in the corner and the whole thing was highly frustrating. I know it's largely my fault, but I think a change of camera there, so you can see the right hand side better, would have definitely helped me out as the overall goal would have been clearer even though the puzzle would have been the same.

Also I couldn't finish the level. After killing the boss - cool bomb grabbing dynamic BTW - the guy said something about getting away and then nothing happened... I flew around, hit some invisible gas. When I respawned nothing seemed to be happening so I dropped to see if there was a scoreboard on the platform and I triggered the previous checkpoint. You may want to crush that.

Overall :star::star::star::star::star: - I'm overlooking the frustrating points above because they were largely my fault and it is a great level

Great detailed feedback rtm - let me answer in order of severity:

EDIT: I fixed the scoreboard issue by not having it emit and also adjusted the camera in the collapsing room so it pans up more.

-I will definitely figure out why the scoreboard didn't show up - that would be a problem!
-The camera in the collapsing room I can probably tweak. It's a pain because you can't rotate the camera zone, so even though the room goes sideways the zone is still perfectly straight. I'll try to get an indicator in there and look for that random gas.
-I put gas on the "running man" so the player couldn't easily plane shift and essentially bypass the whole challenge. To be honest, this guy was a total pain to get working because of the drawbridge and the limited space. If I was redesigning this section again I would change a few things, but at this point it would take more time to retool than it's worth. I agree that the gas is not ideal.

I know you've managed a fix now, but just a tip with camera zones: you can wire any switch into a camera - so if you placed a prox with 180 degree angle on the floor, it would slant with the floor - then wire it to the camera and make the camera zone much bigger than the prox radius - you can also wire logic systems etc into cameras to enable / disable them at will.2009-09-09 09:08:00

Well, in the meantime, I have played this one.

And what can I say? ok, I try to put my experience in words:

the short summary: godllike

the long summary goes like this :-)

This level felt not like just "a level" to me as I played it: I felt like I was part of a movie and I became the hero. And hell yes, this was a great experience. You created so many awesome puzzles here that it blew my mind.
Your visuals are outstanding, the usage of the 3d-glitch in the start-area is so cool - and the great wall with the door in it: amazing art! There are so many cool things in this epic level, that I haven't the space to write it down in this post. But here are some brilliant things that I just have to mention:

* very nice story-telling
* the first attacking native - oh boy, how cool is that??? this spear-wiggling native is one of my favorite characters I've ever (!) met in this game!
* the overall look of these tribe-theme - it looks just like a big tribe's village somewhere deep deep in the jungle
* your kind of humor while chatting with your hq
* man, I LOVE THE SCENE where the natives say something like "watch behind you" and you turn your head (with changing camera-angle) and think just "?" :-) this reminds me of the well known scene in "The Secret Of Monkey Island (amen)" where Guybrush has this little conversation with the three natives (including "Lemon-Head" LOL) : "attention, behind you, a three-headed monkey" :-))))) THAT WAS A BIG EXPERIENCE FOR ME - THANK YOU FOR THAT LAUGH!!! :-)
* the complete tree-climbing are - wow what a creation!
* and of course: the big native's god with his big firey hands - amazing stuff!
* and of course 2: your big big boss fight scene - spectacular - I didn't remember playing a custom level with such a high-tech-fight with such a complex constructed boss. thumbs up for that

after all, I can't remeber if there has been just one simple thing that I would have made different - your level is one of the finest I've ever played (and believe me, I played a lot!!!)

I would be an idiot if I wouldn't give this level :star::star::star::star::star: - a must play - this one needs 200.000 plays minimum!
Thanks for creating and sharing it phife211!

Wow, it was really incredible. The first one I thought wow, but this is probably at least three times better. I really loved the beginning parts at the city and the cutscene. Your character design was intriguing and the platforming was epic (I'm a great lover to platforming). The final boss was amazing, although I felt it was almost a bit simple and easy...but that's just me. Either way, great job!

:star::star::star::star::star: and a ♥ (Heart), very fun and I can't wait to see number three!

I've just finished playing these levels, and I'm speechless.

These levels just provide one incredible moment after another. I felt like I was playing some sort of preview for LBP2.

I've never seen gameplay mechanics, visual design and storytelling combine as seamlessly as this - not even in the levels provided on-disk. For once, it actually felt like an adventure. And the detailing on everything made my eyes pop out.

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart. Amazing work.

(There's actually only one issue I had with the whole adventure, and it's an odd one...
In the first level, the flaming boss has a star & cresent symbol behind him. Now, I want to show this level to my friend- but as a Muslim I know he'll be annoyed by that. Perhaps you could swap it for a pentagram or something?)

Glad you guys enjoyed it! The thing that killed me with these levels is how much ended up on the cutting room floor - I had a bunch of ideas that I tossed because they didn't fit, would break occasionally, or were just a pain, so it's great to hear you like the finished product.

@ Tig-W: thanks! I guess I'm not aware that the crescent/star combo is of religious significance - is it offensive or just not PC? I definitely don't want to offend anyone...

yeah, this image
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2300/islam2.jpg
is the specific symbol of Islam. (like the star of david for Judaism).

I think Muslim players would be offended if they feel they're being linked to this horrible tribe!

Every religious symbol is offensive to some people to some degree. I didn't catch that in there, but I'd remove it.

I'm not saying it's likely to be moderated, it probably won't be, but if you just want to make sure no one is offended, removing any real world religious symbol (at least of any still practiced religions - Ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Druidic stuff, for example, should be pretty much open I'd imagine) is probably a good idea.

EDIT: Op, nm, just read the last post ... I should probably read every post before I respond.

I think I know what you're talking about - the drawers can break bc the books aren't glued. I'll see if I can fix, but i've only seen that happen once after many playtests and I like the books unglued personally. Thanks for the feedback.

@Cybersora - I'm working on the third now! It's definitely going to finish up the story. I'm doing a few things that should hopefully cut down on the time it takes to make it...the first 2 were about two months in the making and I'd rather not spend that much time on the third!
