I have to ask ...

If you are going to spend time making something that you believe people would heart naturally, why would you put up an "H4H" flag and have alot of those people not heart it and just auto give you a 1-star rating? To me this seems like shooting yourself in the foot.

Now I understand when people put up a piece of garbage with "H4H" on it - they're trying to get hearts on something other people wouldn't heart or rate decently anyways - but making something you spent actual time and effort on and putting up an "h4h" tag just seems like sabotaging yourself and asking to get less hearts and lower rating ... not to mention, of course, less plays.

This could be an amazing level for all I know - (I haven't played it, I don't know) - but I would be ashamed to heart it and have people see a "h4h" level in my hearted levels list.

I'm honestly not trying to bash, it just really seems bizarre to me that you would put that up on any level that you care enough about to open a thread on a forum for and state such ambitious goals for.

to summarise what jagrevi said. remove the H4H tag, by the looks of the pictures it seems you have a put a lot of work into this and you will most likely get lots of hearts (with enough republishing).2009-09-06 20:46:00

NOOOO! you got the wrong end of the stick! I'm not asking for hearts, the Story Mode is called 'H4H' XD If you played the level its all about a new evil threat (similar to the collector) calling himself 'H4H' He's trying to make all levels unplayable by placing scoreboards at the start of every level! sorry if it sounds that way its really the exact opposite of what im going at XD

Aaah, I see.

Perhaps than a name like "The H4H Saga", "The Hearter" or something along those lines might be safer? I see alot of people reading it the way I did.

Never jump to conclusions

Just played your level! I think it's worth noting that you changed the name to just "The Introduction"

First of all... I love the hand! It was very clever and the style of the level is very nice. The theme sorta gave it a neutral setting kinda, and made it look like you were getting ready for your adventure.

I also liked the elevator sequence where he talks to you while you're going up instead of just standing and read the speech bubbles. It was both interesting and got me engaged into the story!

The only problem was the clouds, I sometimes got stuck in them and couldn't move so had to restart... which was some what annoying. And i didn't quiet understand the scoreboard thing... was i just supposed to get the key.... and quit the game? or also land on the scoreboard some how?

I loved it how you locked your next level, made it feel like a Story Level which i love!!!!!!
Did i say I loved the story? lol

Oh oh! I also loved how that creator curator introduced all the other levels in the frames! it was very lovely.
Does the cloud person have a name? If he did... i forgot it....

I also played your next level.... oh my god...... Jackofcourse... you now have a rival!!!

It was also amazing!
AHHHH i just loved it!
It actually felt like a MM staff made the level! It was greaaaaaaaaaat
And the best thing is!!!!! There are so many secret areas and stuff that I need to explore!

Hallm3 I shall kiss you and hug you like a little sackboy until you scream from pain.

Yes, if you edit your first post and click the 'go advanced' button you will be able to change the name of the thread once more.

Looks very good... im very excited about this series but

PLEASE CHANGE THE TITLE!!!!

Im sure you can think up something original...

Don't make it: The Introduction H4H or just The Introduction.
It will completely ruin your level and any chances it has of doing well on the community.

Well, the H4H thingie put you under the spotlight, one way or another, some good levels sometimes go under the radar because it seems that they don't have nothing to say.
I'll play your level later on.

thankyou so much!! wow, your so nice! XD i'll try and fix the cloud problems but unfortunately it just happens with those type of objects but with the scoreboard thing once you get the key its directly infront of the scoreboard so the level should end once you have the key!? i don't know what happened to you, i can't think what you might have done lol oh well atleast you enjoyed playing it, which is what its all about!

You don't find out the characters name until quite a lot later into the story, you'll find out about him in Level 16, I think when you get back round to Australia. Here's another question! I have 22 levels planned and named for the story mode but you can only publish 20. If I were to publish the last 2 and perhaps some survival challenges on account you can actually, if you press square on a key in your inventory, 'send to a friend'? does this mean I could send it to my other account and have 2 levels linked across two accounts?? and once again thankyou so much for the feed back! I'll try and make the second level better than the first, cos the first one was a bit 'dull' XD

thanks! but it was only an intro to the story mode XD i didn't wanna make it too long, it might have started to drag on a bit. the story wasn't too complicated so it didn't take long to explain! my next level is already up (you get the key at the end of the intro) you can find it in my levels page, called Sub Metropolis! hope you like it!

Does this thread include feedback for the second level as well? I'll assume it does.

I wasn't all too impressed with the intro. Too much copy and paste of the clouds, in my opinion. And, yes, it's possible to get stuck in them. Regardless, I moved onto the Metropolis [?].

Wow! WOW! Holy cow. I didn't believe you when you said you wanted to make a continuation of the story mode, but I was oh-so wrong. It wasn't the hardest, prettiest level around, but it was the complete package!

I really have to run, but I'll be back with more feedback after I play it again. Brilliant stuff. I haven't hearted it yet, but I will.

A side note: there's a contest going on around here for a "Back to Basics" type level. I believe yours fits the bill as it has completely visible logic, and would probably win the thing (assuming you'd like to enter).

Also, I need to show you how to make a quick reset timer for your little timer puzzle. If I forget, remind me. Gotta go!

Edit: See below.

Brand new to lbp? You can publish levels on your littlebigplanet. People can only play them once you do this. When they are on your moon, nobody else can access them. To publish a level, go to your moon, select a level, and scroll over to find "Publish." I hope you figure it out, but that question really didn't belong here.

Ah. I see. Thank you very much. I realize it didn't really belong here, I asked because I saw the pictures on the first post, sorry.

I'm with everyone else, because I now know what H4H means. Maybe you should remove it from the title.

Well, nobody has really given you feedback on the second level... I'm not sure what that's all about. Anyways...

I really liked how clean and smooth the level was. Even though all of your logic is visible, it doesn't ever feel obtrusive. About the only things I didn't see were magic mouths and speaker objects. Kudos for making it throwback style.

You had some nice solid platforming throughout. Nothing too spectacular, but is was an actual treat to play. There were some interesting looking x2 areas, but I was alone, so couldn't check them out in their entirety. There were also some nice hidden areas relating to sticker switches. I'm not sure, but are they stickers that you give away at some point in the level? (I don't have community prizes turned on) Since you are using F4F, then I'll assume that you are looking for constructive criticism to help make the level better. Here goes:

Suggestions:

Try to make some more possible point combos. Work on placing little piles of 3 bubbles just close enough that you can rack up a combo when going full tilt.
Use a quick reset timer for your timing puzzle in the middle of the race. Check below for more info.
It's possible to bypass some areas in the race by plane-****ing forward. It's kind of a quicker trick, but I'm not sure it was intentional.
You should block off access to the "pipe" at the end gate, as it's possible to get caught and squished in there, and you respawn right back in it.
At the end of the race, it's possible to run in the back plane to the left into some electricity. It's not really fair because I was secret-hunting.

Quick Reset: This little contraption allows your timer to "instantaneously" reset, so you don't have to wait for it to "charge up". This is very useful for the timed puzzle you have in the level.

The setup:

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1280&d=1252370703

You should have a stiff piston and a winch, both set the same max and min lengths. The winch should have a strength of 10, and piston should have a strength of 5. Then you want to place a grab switch, attached to nothing in particular, inverted and set to directional. Wire it to the piston; the piston will now be constantly pushing outward, when not held in place by the stronger winch. Set the timing of the piston to the length of time that you want the timer to last for (well, actually double the amount of time, but you get the picture).

Next, set your button to directional, invert it, and wire it to the winch. Set the timing of the winch to be .1 - this is why it's called a quick reset.

When you step on the button, the strong winch will overpower the weak piston and pull it all the way in, to the minimum length of both. Then, once you let off the button, the winch will instantaneously lengthen back out, but it cannot push the block (properties of winches 101). The piston, however, will now be able to push the block out slowly, according to its timing setting. Put a key on the block, and you are all set.

This is also convenient because standing on the button will keep it in the shortest length state. Also, if you step on the button again when it is halfway extended back out, it will still reset to the shortest length. If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck.

Wow!! long message XD thanks you so much it was really useful! I really can't think of where you could skip some places of the race, could you be specific?? Although I don't really understand the quick reset switch?? could you accomplish the same thing with just a button set at one-shot hooked up to the piston set to a flipper thing you know where it goes out or in really quick and then slowly in?? thanks so much for the feedback, i might make a separate thread for the second level cos not many people have commented on it XD2009-09-08 13:29:00

Yes, the same thing can be done with a flipper piston, but you can't do a few things with it.

1. You can't re-trigger it until it's done with its cycle.
2. As soon as you touch the button, the timer starts.

With the quick reset, the timer starts when you get off the off the button, and it can be reset at any time. If you still don't completely understand it, try making exactly what I have pictured above. You start to understand how it works.

If you still don't get it, add me on PSN, and I'll send you the object.

----

About the shorcuts during the race:

At the timer part, you can jump forward off the button, and land in the middle of the large rotating wheel/path. Then, in the very next part, you can jump forward before the finish gate and trigger it by running left-to-right. Neither of these are what I did the first time, so I assume they aren't intended.

Edit: I just realized that a tech demo level I have, called "Slow Motion (something or other)" has a quick reset timer in it. The level is copyable, do you can just yank it from the level.

Loved sub metropolis, solid fun start to finish. Didn't like the intro though. Graphically it's actually pretty good. One thing though, i'd redisign the crab creator guy(you can see it in the pictures of the creators in the intro). He doesn't look as good as the other ones(the totem pole guy looks great).2009-09-13 21:26:00

Not a great deal to say about the intro that hasn't been said already. A few layer switching issues but nothing major.

Your second level is a good solid level.

The visuals are good, nothing spectacular and just missing a that little bit of flair to make them truly stand out, but they do the job and do it well. Not sure on the camouflage material in the backgrounds though. Personally I think there will be a few materials a bit more fitting.

Simple but effective platforming. An all found good level. It's missing that 'wow' factor that makes it truly stand out, but considering that this is going to be a long series, it's always best to start of simple and work up, so with that in mind, it's a fantastic start.

Only other thing I would comment on, and this is a very minor and very personal criticism, the grabbable sponges that take you places are a little too big for my liking. If you look at Mm's levels, and that's clearly the style you are attempting to emulate, the sponges are not quite so big, they're just a little bit more manageable and feel like you're in control of them a bit more. As I say, very small thing but it's just a bit of a pet hate of mine

Great work. Looking forward to your next level.

I just got done playing it. Nice work, I thought the visuals and design were excellent. I also like where the storys going. The only problem was length, but I guess as an introduction its fine.

Whens the next one due?

I played Sub Metropolis to, thats a blast all the way through, again excellently designed with some nice clean visuals.

I have you 5* and a heart for both

Hi! Just finished playing the introduction. I have to say, I really liked it. The intro with the hand was great! The only creator curator was also really nice. I loved how you used mag keys for eyes. The whole look and style of the level was really nice. Showing the logic was beneficial to the level! But I ask why there was so many music boxes for the same song? The story and the level makes me crave for more and according to most of these post I'm guessing the connected level is where to go. My only gripe is that why was the scoreboard upside down? All in all I really like this Introduction and can't wait for more!

:star::star::star::star:/ Hearted!

Oh and is your F4F deal still up? If so then can you give feedback on my level SIREN: [The Lost World] (Episode 2-Otherside). Thanks!

Thankyou so much!! bout the music well i guess its just a Mm thing. I fyou notice they do do it throughout their own levels, plus sometimes when i played it the song randomly went off, so i placed them multiple times to keep it on in the background XD The scoreboard was upside down because The Cloud King was holding it up for you! play it again and you'll figure it out XD thanks again!

EVERYBODY WHO HASN'T, GO PLAY THESE LEVELS.

Having said this, now I can start to explain why I loved so much this level;
The kind of levels that I ike the most are Mm style's like, and those two are probably the best around whn it comes to that.

I loved them, yes, and I'm really looking forward for your next level. You have decided to do quite an enormous job by reproducing the story mode levels, but as for seeing the submetropolis one, I'm pretty sure that you can face it and finish it.

I really loved the introduction level; how it started was awesome. The whole introductory evel was incredibly well done, always mantaining that airy look and feel. Besides, I've got to say that you di well with the social critique on here, in my opinion; I don't think that the critique in here was strong enough to offend anybody, but yet, provided a nice plot.
Aww, man, what a great, GREAT introductory level!

Ok, now for the submetropolis.
It stunned me how much this looked like a story mode level. Seriously, if tis was added on the initial set of leves of the story mode, nobody would have noticed, I'm sure of that.
What I liked in here, it's the way that you used that Mm can, the Mm object. Many people tends to avoid Mm objects, but you did a fantastic use of it in here; both by using it for the visuals and for the gameplay.
I also loved the Npc in here; it was so very well done, and it also reminded me of the Mm style.
The passages where circles of glass were falling were also a higlight to me; it was so fun going trough them.
Overall, this was a perfect level.

I hearted both levels, and gave them 5 stars. I used the tag "bonito" for the introduction and "intenso" for the Submetropolis. I think that I'm probably the person who enkoyed the most your levels, seriously.
And when I come back to the PS3, I'll heart you as an author!
When is the next one coming out, btw? I'm really looking forward to it!

As for the F4F, I'll save it this time, and when I'm finished on what I'm doing, I'll tell you where to return it.

Cool. Hope its even better than Sub Metropolis. Is it still set in the sewers or has it moved?2009-10-15 10:57:00

As its a new story mode, the first 3 levels will be set in 'The Pipes'. I know the first level is similar in style to 'The Metropolis' levels but the next two (especially The Rat Ruler's Castle) have a different look after 'The Pipes' the story moves to environments not seen in the original story mode!

Hey! Just played the first two levels. They were fantastic! MM quality, actually they were better. When I played through them, I had the exact same feeling that I had when I played through the official story mode for the first time! Can you give all the characters away at the end of the series like the collectors lair? I just really want the cloud god

If I were you, I'd publish all of your levels unlocked, because you are just going to get less and less plays when each new level comes out. Just have a quick message at the end of each level saying that "If you wish to play this story mode in order, check the other levels made by me." You should keep the keys to the next level in the series in there though, so people know where to go next. It's just a thought, I just think your levels deserve more plays.

I think if you send the key it will only unlock a level, but they can't put it down. If you captured it and sent as an object I think it would work. Just make sure it's unlocked.(the key) I think this would work. Anybody else know?2009-10-18 07:57:00

Just to alert everyone to the fact that I've added a completely new section to the level providing more longevity and an explanation to the level and key system used! Hope you enjoy it might be editing it again soon! : )2009-10-30 20:43:00

The best idea to get plays is to keep using your key system, but republish The Introduction and do The republish trick on it..... I'd probably do this when you have more levels, but I think this idea is the best in your predicament.
The introduction will get lots of plays, and so should rest from then on.

Yeah, I played the updated version and first off, let me just say ...

... the "pie charts" look brilliant. Really, just magnificent simplicity and aesthetics. You actually make the fact it's a project in progress seem like a fun game mechanic.

However, as far as the more practical matter, it seems you updated the level by simply publishing over the previous version. The way the system works, however, means this is not likely to grant you new plays.

Here's an explanation of exactly what to do, in case the way to use the system was not clear or previously known...

This is what to do to promote your level.

Make sure you have a copy of the new version of the intro level on your moon. Now, copy it again, so that you have two copies on your moon. Make a very slight edit to one, such as a triangle of dark matter in a corner of the "map" that players never even get to - just so the game will identify them as technically different.

Then delete your original version from online.

Ok, now upload one of the versions on your moon to your online profile. Basically, re-upload it as an entirely new level (in practical terms though, yes, you're just replacing the old version. Doing it this way is important though, because of how the GAME will qualify the level).

Since it's a "new level", it should appear on the "new levels" search page, which should get you some more plays.

Now, here's the trick. For the first week of a level's lifespan (main reason it's important to delete/republish as a new level in the step above), whenever a republishing is done *with a change*, the level is put back in the front of the "new levels" page.

So. what you do now, is republish your two versions on your moon over your online version again and again, alternating between the two. You could do this a few times a day, or even every 4 seconds - however, keep in mind that it will put notices on the screens of all your PSN friends who are online each time you republish. The more you do it though, the better it will work.

This will keep you on the front of the "new levels" page, and you will rake in tons of plays until you not only end up on the "busiest" page in many cases, but you inevitably make it to the "cool levels" page - which is the default "show me community levels" search.

This will allow you to get thousands of plays in a very short period of time, and will get your work known out there, where it very honestly deserves to be - your work is astounding.

This is how a level is "promoted". By being republished again in again (with a change each time) in the first week of it's life.

However, since your level is just an intro to 'your game', you can delete it from online and do this over again each time you have an update, which should get thousands of people into 'your game' each time you do it.

I don't think the republishing trick is possible once the level has been published for over seven days.

EDIT: @Jagrevi that's a great idea! I can't believe that I hadn't thought of the deleting the intro every week. That way you can still have the awesome progressing system and get tons of plays!

You can after seven days if you delete the level "slot" and republish it brand new. What I was trying to say was do what jagrevi said, except he went into more detail.... Thanks jegrevi.2009-10-31 14:12:00

Hallm3,

You sent me a message stating that you were nervous about deleting the current intro, as you would lose the plays on it.

In this case, just LOCK the level for now instead. It's much less committal this way - as you can go exactly back to as you have it right now.

Please do consider using the republishing trick though - this is one of the most promising projects around. It's fun, it's charming, it is really an thing to have around, and it would be a shame to really only have it to played by people here on LBPC from here on.

This project deserves to be shared with everyone.
