Thermo fluctuations

Archive: 7 posts

I came across an odd bug with one of my levels today. Basically I tried to make a crack in a stone wall in the rearmost thin plane in part of the level. So I deleted a square piece in the middle, and then used the corner editor cursor to make it more natural, next thing the thermo shot up 2 bars! It was only a simple 5-7 sided hole cut out. I stopped to think about what happened, and after about 10 seconds the thermo returned to it's original position.
All this happened in pause mode, and the starting thermo was 4 bars short of overheating.
Has this ever happened to anyone else before?

You sure it's not something else breaking or emitting in someplace you can't see it?2009-09-06 12:51:00

Yup.

There is distinctly an issue with the corner editor tool that does this in complex objects (either complex shapes or objects that are made of many shapes glued together). The caves in Subterranean Setbacks are made of massive objects. In some places the corner editor just won't work, in most others I get the thermo shooting up.

I was very worried by this initially, but the thermo does seem to drop down to a sensible amount when you either deselect the corner editor, or when you let it play for a bit, so long term it should cause you no problems. My advice woudl be to edit in little stages, thne check the thermo returns periodically.

Remember that each selecting of a corner or moving a corner counts as a step in the undo buffer, so if you have to undo corner editing it can be a pain.

@snowy: Nope, she's in pause mode the whole time, and even though I do have things wired up to emit in play mode, I never hit play or undo and it still happened.

@rtm: I think the problem with corner editor not working is if you manage to shift a corner of one object into another object, that then locks it and prevents further editing.
Care to elaborate on this "undo buffer"?

Each time you rewind, you go back one "step" or one action.

For some reason, selecting a corner with the corner editor counts as a step so even making 3 or 4 changes with the corner editor can mean many many steps to undo or rewind it.

The "undo buffer" is just a list of your previous actions, it is how the system knows what to do when you rewind.

I tihnk you're right about the shifting objects through one another. It's real pain because it appears to be caused by random rounding errors in my case

Yeah, I have this same problem with my recent level - Mining Mayhem

The whole level is made using the corner editing tool and so it could be this.

It's hard to finish the level as you dont know how closee you are to actually overheating. And even if you are close it could suddenly spike and say its overheated.

Yes, I've seen this frequently - but not just with the corner editor (at least I think I've seen it under other circumstances). It always seems to drop back down, so it feels like a little game within the game that I am playing against the editor. Keeps me on my toes! 2009-09-06 13:54:00
