I need an opinion.

Is it considered abnormal to have a level run from right to left instead of left to right?

That's what my newest project has going for it right now. It's a desert level. BD

Its rare but not unheard of. It might be awkward for some players however.2009-09-06 03:05:00

Yeah, the player will most likely have to adjust as the norm is for levels to run from left to right.

If you ever feel it's going to impact your level negatively, you can always highlight the entire level and flip it.

Well, the first sequence of the level is vertical right now. Lots of obscure secrets.

Go for it! What's wrong with going the other direction? If I remember correctly, most of the underground level in the Savannah (can't remember the name) goes from right to left.

It would definitely be different, and therefore separate your level from all the others out there.

It would be good to see something different for once. There was another thread called left or right where the same issue came up.2009-09-06 03:52:00

If you're concearned about people not getting use to the direction of the level, start the level with them going right, then just make a switch to running left (i.e. sign, movement of scenery, line of point bubbles). Not only will it help people to get use to running left, but it makes the player run left without even knowing that the whole level runs in that direction.2009-09-06 03:53:00

No, I think it's a great idea. I've actually played a few levels that have worked to the left, and they were all really fun. Different does not necessarily equal bad! 2009-09-06 06:26:00

It's good when levels go left, right, up and down. It's kinda boring to just be flat and to the right all the way. No matter how good it is.2009-09-06 06:44:00

Thats sounds like a good idea to me. They say variety is the spice of life and as others have said, other levels do this too, so go for it!!2009-09-06 12:25:00

Only up and and down would be interesting too. And quite likely frustrating if it isn't done very well.2009-09-06 12:29:00

TBH it makes absolutely no difference to the gameplay. Most levels go back and forth anyway and have at least one section going right to left. It's only for the first 2 or 3 seconds, when your initial movement isn't right, that it feels odd. After that it's just the same.2009-09-06 13:23:00

like rtm said, most of the time they go either way. look at Mm's first island level, it gots completely from left to right! to top it off its a 'ninja training'-ish level, and no ones complaining.2009-09-07 10:57:00

I say that's it doesn't matter where or how you walk, as long as it leads to the end (a hopefully good end)2009-09-08 21:02:00

When i first played "Distress in the Ocean" it starts you off going right to left, i was actually slightly flustered by it. I was like, "Well this level sucks, theres a wall right next to the start where am i suppose to go!?" Then i was like "Oh, ill go left"

I think it would be cool to have a level go right to left, it adds a new spin on things, spices the level creativity up a bit.

It wouldn't bother me at all. It's rare yes, but not a problem imo.2009-09-08 23:42:00
