The Greatest Invention Ever...And How To Make Your Own.

Archive: 52 posts

Yes. This is it. I have stumbled upon the greatest invention in the history of man. The wheel? Pretty good, no? DONKEY FOOD, compared to this. Fire, that's what you're saying now, it's got to be fire. WRONG. It's simple, my friends. Cake!

But no normal cake...3-minute cake. Designed for the student in need, and fun for all the family!

The idea is that the common student has two items at his disposal - mugs and spoons. The result of this recipe is a delicious cake that can be made in 3 minutes and can take the place of a full meal. The two best applications of this recipe are when I've had mates round for a midnight feast, and when my brother brought bags and bags of the ingredients into school to make them during maths class.

Here are the instructions (these are the proportions I use. The best results are when half is baked, and the rest forms a sauce, though if you fiddle with the numbers you get varied cakes.)

Into 1 mug (yes, MUG), add:

1 egg
3 1/2 tablespoons self raising flour (or, 3 non-self raising and 1/4 tsp. baking powder)
3 tbsp. milk
3 tbsp. oil (Vegetable, if this is unavailable, ground nut.)
4 tbsp. Cocoa powder (Cadbury's drinking chocolate powder or similar will do)
1 teaspoon baking powder.
4 tbsp. caster sugar.

Then mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, mix, and when it's all smoooooooooooooooooooooth, it's done.

Next, place the mug in the microwave. The original recipe is for 3 minutes on full, however, I recommend 1 minute, then add a teaspoon of chocolate spread, then another minute in the microwave.

Et voil?! Good eats! Goes great with ice cream or chocolate sauce.

EDIT: Here's some photos courtesy of BSprague:

Nice. Except being a student I don't have half of those ingredients at my disposal.

Anything you make out of dust? I have plenty of that.

Dust's a powder, I'm sure you could use it to replace all the powdered ingredients on that list.2009-09-06 00:17:00

O ye, I tried it last night. However, I put one tablespoon of baking powder in by accident...so...yeah. It basically exploded in the microwave. It was good though. 2009-09-06 21:34:00

Can I use regular sugar? I think I might have Confectioner's sugar as well, but I'm not entirely sure, and I want to try this out. 2009-09-06 21:39:00

I used regular sugar in mine. I didn't even know what caster sugar was until I looked it up.

Speaking of which, by caster sugar you might edit in (superfine sugar for you Americans)

Yeah, regular sugar's fine. I used Musca-whatever it is, the common brown sugar, it was fine.

Also, funny mistake Bass First time I tried it with baking powder, I put in 1 teaspoon, and even then it grew so much the tower collapsed. A tablespoon would be...crazy.

Haha, cool, thanks BSprague. And try not to make the same mistake as Bass xD Also, the chocolate spread is not necessary, so don't worry if you don't have that.2009-09-06 22:04:00

It works! I didn't have Confectioner's sugar, but regular worked fine. Also, I didn't have cocoa powder, so I used Jell-O mix, and took a couple pictures. It's delicious, though it did overflow in the microwave a little bit. I'm uploading pictures now.

EDIT: Pictures reposted a couple posts down at #22.

I realize what the issue is, I linked to the pictures straight from my Gmail account, meaning that only the person who is logged in can see them. I'm reuploading them now.

Ok, these two are of the "cup-cake":

I didn't have a couple of ingredients, I just improvised. Instead of 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder, I used 2 tablespoons of Jell-O pudding mix and 2 tablespoons of Cookies 'N Creme Muscle Milk.

It does. I don't have an egg or baking powder I think.

What oil are we talking about here? Crude oil?

Does seem like a good idea though (the cake not the crude oil) so I might just give this a go.

I didn't know what to use, I just used Vegetable Oil. It worked well, and it didn't taste bad at all for something that took a minute or two to mix up and another two in the microwave.

Ok, I just made tihs with 75% success.

I used Canola Oil, Jello Chocolate Pudding Mix, and Brown sugar as replacements.

It overflowed, but not terribly, but really significantly. It tasted good, but not awesome.

Astrosimi, yeah, those different ingredients may have messed up the recipe xD

Littlebigdude, I'm sorry it didn't go well, but everyone I know has found the mixing easy (only 30-60 seconds, and in a cooking class, I'm sure you stir a LOT more than that), the microwaving fun (you get to see the cake rising, it's so cool!), and the cake delicious. But each to their own D:

rseah, good luck man!

oh i see you used Jell-O
we had to use bakeing cocoa powder
wich tastes nasty
wich probly made the cake...thing
nasty lol
when i say nasty i dont mean it was bad
just less better than makeing it the real way

on the up side the next day we made
RED LOBSTER DROP BISCUITS
DELICOUSE!

oh it was the microwave
makes it all rubbery and gross
cause i was makeing it for the whole group
so first time a did 3 mins
then i learned from that and dropped to 2 mins
but they still came out gross
watching it come out of the cup was kinda nasty
it was like "so...im gunna eat...that?"

Haha, lbd, dude, you're getting it all wrong! The microwave's the good part! It's exactly the same as oven/aga except FASTER and maybe overheating, but watching it come out of the cup is the part that most people like best!2009-09-28 19:18:00

Brillaint recipe, bit dry, but that's my fault for not putting on anything like choc spread or making something to go on top.

I'll photo it next time I make one

guess i have a different outlook on food =/
eating and makeing the food is supposed to be the fun
not watching it be gross in a microwave for a minute
wheres the appeal?
i doubt you'll find much use of a microwave in the proffesional kitchen
only good for quick noodles
even then its better to boil the water.

idk it all just seems off
think about it
"oh noes theres no time to eat i gotta get to *insert place here* in like ten minutes lets see whats a good quik *breakfast, lunch, dinner* hmmm i know...CAKE! yea and i can make it in a mug!"
see?
oh well still fun i guess.

Yeah, we do have different ideas, the fun is the mess, the mixing, the godlike power of creation and watching your creation rise, think about Frankenstein, his creator was pretty darn pleased when an electronic machine made his creation rise.

But that didn't turn out that well.

EDIT:
Well I tried it and I am full, have tasty goodness in my tummeh, and now know a valuable piece of info... It will prove to be effective for a multitude of years.

By the way, a little tip: Don't make it in a short mug... It makes a mess.

I don't know what it is about mine, but I've never had a dry one using the ingredients I use. I don't cook it all the way though, from the pictures I posted you can tell it's still pretty moist.
