Renaming emitted object

Archive: 11 posts

Didn't know where to post this or if anyone new about this but I've just found out that if you have an emitter emitting an object, then you rename the object, the emitter doesn't emit it anymore.

(Need to find another word for emit!)

I didn't know this, I always name my objects right after I capture them and then put them in an emitter. If someone is having trouble with an emitter, this will be very important information for them, because it could very well be the case.2009-09-04 20:19:00

Now I know what happened about a week ago, and I usually don't care about giving names to captured objects, unless I give them as prizes... I didn't lose much time anyway, I soon replaced the emitters and voil?.
Anyway it's VERY strange, since if you delete the captured object the emitter keeps on doing its job.

I found this out as I was renaming an object to give as a prize, I then republished it and played through it to find it wasn't working.2009-09-04 20:41:00

I may be a bit off-topic, but is there some way to report this kind of bug to MM?2009-09-05 09:40:00

That's exactly what I was thinking

The object is saved in the emitter it seems. Your popit and the emitter are 2 different things.
I pretty much always erase from my popit the objects i emitted. It's not a bug, it's pretty convenient actually. I've keep only a couple of objects that were complex and that I would feel like redoing if ever my level broke or corrupts.

I really thing this is "as design". This is to prevent you from erasing something from your popit by accident and then crapping your emitters at the same time. That would be beyond annoying.
If you rename something, it's just like on a computer. You rename it = it's another file now. So if you rename your emitted object I feel it's normal it is not the whole you will suddendly emit. When you rename and object, you need to set it again in the emitter.

Of course... If it's design, then it's bad design - UI concepts lesson 1: consistancy. Are the item in the emitter linked, or not? It would seem the answer is yes and no

I wonder what happens if you rename and then delete... I think that would be beyond annoying if it does what I think it does...

If you want to comparing to something on a Windows PC, then consider putting a spreadsheet in a word document. You either make a copy into word, in which case any changes or renaming or deletion of the original XLS have no bearing on the version in the word document OR you link it to the xls file and then renaming or deleting the xls will break the Word document. You either link or you don't, and it's consistant.

Yes, I just used MS Office to give an example of good UI design, deal with it

The difference here is that if you delete a file on your computer, it's gone. In LittleBigPlanet, it stays in the emitter.

Yes, I do know that files can be brought back after "emptying the Recycling Bin", but in the context of this example, it doesn't really matter.
