I can only base my opinion from Canadians we have met, which to date have been travel nurses from Canada that my wife works with, and there are quite a few. Every single one of them put down our health care, brag about how much better life is overall in Canada but then when she asks them why they are here if its so much better there, they kind of draw a blank.

Maybe its just the nurses that are not happy with something in Canada.

Sorry if I offended anyone. Not my intention. I just assumed you were actually asking to get honest responses.

I can only speak for Montreal, Quebec, but Canada is an ok place to live. Not perfect (is there such a thing?) but ok. I think it's the least worse of the north american countries in terms of overall disadvantages. The only real big problem is our lovely corrupt/wasteful/slothful government. 2009-09-04 18:10:00

Canada is kind of like America except everyone wears Toques, drinks beer, eats a lot of maple syrup, and owns a hockey stick.

Ccubbage, what are you talkin' aboat?

I've never been to canada, so I have no data on the place, but I'd love to visit there sometimes. I know the guy who did Gobo Fraggle's voice is canadian, as are many of the people who did the voices in Ranma 1/2, so it can't be bad, can it? ^_^

I love Canada, and with the handful of Canadians I've met, I love Canadians, too!

For the purposes of this thread, I'm going to ignore Celine Dion! But apart from that, Canada is responsible for a lot of things that the rest of the world assume came from the USA.

Par example... Basketball, Trivial Pursuit board game, the electron microscope and the electronic synthesiser.

And, yes, yes, yes, I was going to include Monsieur Bell for 'inventing' the telephone, but as a Brit we have a few issues with this 'fact' lol (as do the Italians! - but Marconi wasn't the first to use radio waves either!).

All in all, Canada is a place I'd rather be than here

Really I have nothing against Canada but do have problems with the Canadians here that down the US in all aspects but cant explain why they themselves are here working I myself was intrigued by the Canadian Health System until I got an idea of how it works. Now I might be completely misinformed so if someone can enlighten me I am all ears. My understanding is substantial wage taxes (explains nurses working here rather than there). And even though person X might pay in XXXXX amount of taxes, its paying for the medical expenses of person Y who paid in Y amount of taxes. If that is the case, Canada would not be a cool place for us.

CCubbage I agree... great movie but I think its more the characters that are the best.

All politics aside, I've always wanted to visit Canada. I have a friend whose mother emigrated from Canada, so I always hear stories about how diverse the snack foods are compared to the US.

Also, just a quick note - this thread is doing OK, but there are a few comments that hint that it could get out of hand, so try to be civil and friendly when replying and it should be alright. Thanks!

How surprising that after such negative post I read the poster comes from Montreal.
It really does a take a Quebecer to be that negative and unproud. GET A SPINE AND OPEN YOUR EYES. If you had traveled a bit around the world or did some research, you wouldn't possibly use the word you use up there.

Canada is not an "ok place", it's one of the best place in the world for the quality of living by ANY STANDARDS. We've also been rated #1 for a while during the 80s and 90s. Also, we are not the "less worse" place. What the hell is a good place to you? Tell me about those country that "good to live in" and then after that tell be about those that are the "best to live in".

Looks like you perceive your life and country as FAR worse than it is. Open your eyes bud. You should be proud and happy to live over here. You have no idea how great life is here compared to mostly anywhere on Earth.

I highly suggest you visit during the Summer season, unless you really like snow.

Is there such a low choice of snack foods in the US? The only thing I've heard is that everything in the US comes in much bigger size formats than we get here (US small-size fries = our medium-size fries, etc).

@RangerZero : I was not being negative, merely neutral. I hesitate to claim a country as the best when I have not lived a significant amount of time in all of the other 200-odd countries of the world. If you wish to discuss it further, I suggest we keep it to PMs then.

In general, to the extent of the Canadians I've met, most of them are airheaded and jingoist to extreme levels..... Of course, not all are like that, but it's like how alot of Americans are dumb.

And I have heard one story in which the Beatles flew out of Canada to avoid getting killed, after most of the Canadian populationd ecided to make an example of Ringo Starr as an English Jew, with the small hitch that while he was a Christian.... however, he does have abig nose, and that has led me to beliueve that Candians in the 60's were antisemitic and pre-judiced. I'm not sure if they are now, but they must have been back then.

Besides that, it's all good eh

Actually, very few Canadians would bash my face for saying that... about half my friends are Canadian - I live in Florida where a lot of them come for the winter. All of them I know have a sense of humor.

Also, I personally say "eh" a lot in my sentences, have a hockey team locally, watch SCTV and Strange Brew, drink beer, and used to wear a toque when skiing.

I took classes on Canadian sensitivity from OCK, RangerZero, Neverynnal, and Oswald the Cat - all of who are from Canada.

Of note, I think Canada is quite possibly the most beautiful, friendly, and awesome place in the world - and everyone I know from there are great.

Canada rocks!

Being that I've lived in Vancouver for half a decade, I can vouch for many Vancouverites and especially people who have moved from Toronto that your descriptions of Canadian-ness are spot on accurate. And most Canadians I know are **** fine proud of it all too.

Although, the maple syrup thing not so much. The only places I see maple syrup are in tourist giftshops. But "eh" is HUGE, especially to folks from Toronto, everyone's got at least one toque, and beer and hockey are a way of life.

Thanks! Actually, most of my friends who come down for the winter are from Vancouver. I've personally only been to Montreal, which is quite possibly the ONLY big city I've ever felt comfortable in. Incredibly clean, and even the bums would beg nicely!

I definately need to remember, however, that this site is changing. I've been here so long and have been comfortable with the Canadian members for long enough that I type things that are almost "inside jokes" with them (such as the 'Maple Syrup' thing).... I forgot that there are other members that don't know me as well, and could probably take offence.

I wouldn't worry on it too much there, Cubb. It was obvious to me that you were joking - and weren't those stereotypes the very same that have been jokes about for decades?

For me, I live in Michigan, which is right there next to Canadia (intentional misspelling). I've been there dozens of times, as my Father married a Canadian woman, and moved up/over there when he did (Toronto area). Canadians really do say "eh" constantly, and it even rubbed off on my father after only a couple of years. Most take it to be rude/uneducated, but I think it's just a regional thing. On the contrary, me experiences with Canadians have led me to believe that they are more polite and respectful than many Americans.

Also, I really don't notice many differences between Ontario and the United States, other than the inclusion of French on everything. Hockey is definitely more popular in Canada though, which is easy to understand, as it's what kids play when they are young. In the states, kids generally play football, basketball, or baseball (at least more-so than those in Canada).

I think what someone was getting at regarding the snackfoods earlier was that there are some unique flavors that wouldn't be as popular in the States. Ketchup flavored chips is a prime example. Even though the flavor of ketchup is pretty popular here, ketchup in Canada generally has more vinegar in it (which was weird the first time).

Hmmm.... it just occurred to me this is starting to sound like my "Jacques the Acadian Warlord" thread. Maybe we should have a mod merge them? I'm starting to wonder how Neverynall's college term paper on American-Canadian relations went.

Oh, and do you know how Canadians spell Canada? "C-eh-N-eh-D-eh."

(joke told to me by a friend from Vancouver... I'll shut up now)

Living in Quebec, I've never actually met anyone who says "eh", but I do see them on some TV shows from Ontario... so I can only assume they really do say that over there. I've only ever been to Toronto on vacation, so I didn't really mingle with the crowds there.

I didn't know there was a difference with ketchup flavored chips. I used to grow up on that as a kid, but I don't like it anymore. I do have a tooth for sour cream & onion flavor though.

This is true, it's a very tart vinegary flavor, it's actually quite good. I hate HATE ketchup with a BURNING passion, but ketchup flavored chips actually aren't bad.

Canadians seem to love their acidy flavors. Go to any fast food chain, and along with ketchup for fries, you'll see packets of white vinegar. No kidding. I've come to prefer the stuff a 1000000:1 over ketchup, which I can happily say I've been able to 100% remove from my diet.

Or go to any fries/poutine place. For anyone who doesn't know what "poutine" is, get ready. It's fries. With curds of mozarella (and sometimes other cheeses). And gravy.

There are other poutines that add in veggies, baked potato fixins, etc.
It's a dangerous food, but if you can get a good one, oh boy.

Fritz Fries is a place we have in Vancouver. I don't go there often, cuz that **** will KILL you.

But when I do... oh boy.

In Vancouver ghetto pizza joints are a dime a dozen, there's so many. The population of Vancouver is incredibly diverse. We've got people from all over the world, and ethnic restaurants from any region you can think of. My favorites are the Ethiopian places. If you haven't had fitfit with injera, my God you're missing out. Hunt that down if you can!!

We've got some good pizza, tons of it in fact. I live near Little Italy where you can get some great wood-fired pizza. There's a ghetto slice place down the street called Uncle Fatih's that does the best ghetto slice I've ever had. Potato pizza, greek pizza with artichoke hearts and olives... Good stuff.

Being from Texas, one thing I do miss is great Mexican food, especially burritos. There's a chain here called Red Burrito, but that stuff's pretty awful. I visited Toronto recently - anyone live there or visit it needs to hunt down New York Sub downtown. They may be called New York Sub, but they do an AWESOME Indian-Mexican fusion burrito.

This just became the favorite regional food thread!

EDIT: That sounds awesome actually, I think I'm going to start that thread.

Nothing beats a real original poutine from Drummondville at the restaurant Roy Jucep. When you go there, not only the poutine is godly but it's that guy who owning the official brevet for the Poutine.

Ketchup on fries rules.

I could live on Maple Sirup.

The Poutine is a meal we eat here. Google is your friend
It's french fries and cheese with a sauce similar to barbecue sauce.

"brevet" I don't know the name in english. It's similar to patents. You secure the invention of something with this official paper.
