It seems that a lot of 60GB PS3s are dying of late...

Archive: 33 posts

Should I be worried about my PS3 soon kicking the proverbial bucket? I mean, I've only had it since last February, but it's still a 60GB which I'm pretty sure was a launch model and then canceled shortly after... Then again, it hasn't shown any signs at all of being close to death (or so I would think... There are signs, right?) and really the performance hasn't altered at all from the time I got it and yesterday (last time I had it on). It's just that I have some stuff coming up within a year that require epic monetary transactions to accomplish and I won't have the spare change for a new PS3 (even if the slims are $299).2009-09-03 16:06:00

Same for me. One night I was just playing Rock Band and it was fine, but in the morning it wouldn't read any blu-ray discs. I could copy most data but some was 'locked' and wouldn't copy onto a USB (LBP copys fine).

I've got an 80GB now with no backwards compatability and only 2 usb slots instead of 4.

Mine is a 20gb so and I have owned it since launch. I recently had some issues with it but now it plays games fine.. all day with no issue.. but it will not play a bluray movie all the way through. So unless there is something with the 60gb that makes them more likely to fail early then I dont think you should be concerned.

I got the slim anyway because we watch bluray movies like crazy and a player cost as much anyway.

Well, thanks for your reassuring words about signs, guys. [/sarcasm]

I guess all I can do is just back up my saves often and hope, right? I mean, backwards compatibility isn't as big a deal as I originally thought it would be, but I do like having all the media ports... Not that I use them, other then the USB slots, but that's not the point.

Oh, should I take it as a bad sign if my PS3 won't ever recognize SD cards?

Just backup your data, Only 80GB's I'm sure don't get YLOD.

Most people have there PS3's for a fair bit, about 2007 ish is when people got theres, so there about starting to kickin in.

Back-up your data regularly, if it does cave in get a PS3 slim.

I've had my 60G since Feb. of last year, and it was refurbished when I got it. It's still alive and kickin' (with the exception of one dilema that resulted in my first PSN to get corrupted ). It's not what PS3 get's YLOD, it's when it will. It's a possibility in all of the models, but with proper maintenance and cleaning (CLEAN THOSE FILTERS), it'll stay alive for a long, long time.2009-09-03 18:00:00

Mine was (the original HDD is not currently in the system) the original 20 GB PS3 and I've never had a problem that I couldn't fix myself.

I can count the amount of times a game has froze on 1 hand.

My system is resilient.

I've got the 80GB from two years ago..... I've had very good luck with game decks so I'm optimistic. I kept my Sega CD running for years.... then it died 2009-09-03 18:42:00

Well truth is it can happen to anyone and a lot of people will not face these problems as well. You just have to be lucky I guess.

Yeah, but when you look at the list you see that there is A LOT of 60GB that have had the YLOD. Some 80GB and very few 40 GB.
Is there a link with the approximative date of release (i mean did the old one make YLOD more?).

Nevertheless, all these stories of PS3 crash are very frightening. I was very bored about XBOX360 for this. I have two XBOX360, each one already return once to the microsoft services for a repair in garanty and currently one have a disc player issue (can't play any movie!!!) and the other is overeating when external temperature is too hot. I even can't play "Tales of Vesperia" during the vacations.
When i was on PS3, i was feeling "safe". It seems it is really not the case anymore....

Really, this generation of console is doomed by malfunctionning. I know that the technology is very advanced in these systems, but...Grrrr
At least, i never had any problem with any of my NINTENDO system...ok it's technically different

There is a known issue with old 60 gigs. I managed to get mine replaced because of this (cost me a bit of money but not as much as a new ps3).2009-09-03 19:21:00

I have a launch 60 GB and a 80 GB I got last October. Both are still running strong, though the latter runs slightly cooler and quieter, I'm guessing due to the smaller, more energy-efficient CPU.2009-09-03 21:41:00

A friend of mine put a digital thermometer behind the fan on his 60gb and it registered around 40c.2009-09-03 22:05:00

Not sure yet. I wait for the reports on broken Slims first.
PS: Certainly not going to get my 60GB version repaired. They aren't reliable enough and I don't really care about BC.

I'm wishing more and more that I had just gone with the repair Sony had offered. I ended up buying an 80GB model and really don't have any regrets. Just wasn't too sure Sony's repairs would hold up in the long run. And it's not like there were doing anything to reassure me either.2009-09-10 15:14:00

I have learned from mistakes and I --WILL NOT-- buy a launch ps4. I don't know if I'll wait for a "slim" version of that but I'll definately wait for a new model or sku or whatever.2009-09-10 17:18:00

I have a 2nd generation 60GB PS3(I can read PS1 and PS2 games, I have four USB on front, etc.) All of my friends said this one was the best on the market. I don't want to buy a slim cuz they suck. And I'm seriously thinking about buying a 120 or 300GB inner hard drive because 60GB isn't enough! So, my question is: If it dies after my "transplantation" , can I have my hard drive back?2009-09-12 04:44:00

My first PS3 died without any warning whatsoever. I was just watching a
DVD and five minutes later, poof!, yellow light of death. That was in January, and I'd had it for about a year and a half. No warranty from the store, either. I LOVED my 60 GB, too. Backwards compatibility was so sweet. Sigh. It still sits in its box; I can't bring myself to dump it.

I won't buy another console without getting the extended warranty from the retailer.
