Gothic Camellia by Tasty-Cafe with pictures

Archive: 4 posts

Tasty-Cafe published a new level today.

It's another stunning ingenious puzzler. Just like "a Dream of Butterfly" (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=15362)

Don't forget to play every other level by this imaginative author !

Sorry I missed this thread when it was first posted but I have now played the level. It has a similar design style to Tasty-Cafe?s the Dream of a Butterfly level but with the lushness pared down to a few dazzling patches here and there, which are all the more effective for the more austere setting overall. The level also has a clever feature whereby as you finish a puzzle the colour is drained out of the scene or restored in all its glory so the scene is constantly changing.

The level is essentially a series of puzzles and platforming challenges, some of them quite original. None of the puzzles is overly difficult to solve but I found the platforming a little unforgiving in places and the author has set a few lethal traps for unwary Sacks. I noticed that although the level has 80+ plays only 12 people appear on the scoreboard (in single player mode which the author recommends). My score on my first play through was so dire that I had to replay it just to save my blushes - you can?t hide when there are so few scores on the board, lol! Admittedly, second time round, I did manage to get the hang of it a bit better. The main tags for the level are frustrating, beautiful and annoying but I think the negative ones are unfair. The checkpoints are all infinite life ones and I think the best course is simply to replay the level, as then you know where the pitfalls are and have got the hang of it better. (Tasty-Cafe himself rates the level?s difficulty as 3 out of 5 but I wouldn?t like to play a level he considered hard!)

My only niggle was that it seemed to end rather abruptly. The creator did say in the level description that he might do a boss for it and perhaps that explains why, when the scoreboard suddenly appears, it's rather unexpected - you have been given no real sense that you were reaching the end of the level. It needs some kind of proper finale.

I think Dream of a Butterfly is still my favourite of Tasty-Cafe?s levels by a whisker but this level is very much worth playing, if only to marvel at the creator?s eye for design, the gorgeous colours and the skill that goes into the mechanics.

Thanks to Kipmonlin for tipping me off about it!

5 stars and hearted.

I recommend this one too. As soon as I saw the clock/gadgets/switches in the beginning, I knew it was going to be a puzzler level. I had a couple "a-ha!" moments solving a few of the puzzles but they weren't difficult to figure out. I can only suggest that in some parts where you activate a switch, there should be a camera cut-scene or close up to the part you just activated because at times, the player's left wondering "what did I just activate?" and having to go back to a scene you just left to find out what was triggered. I'd give this 3 out 5 for difficulty. Once you've played it one time, you can easily spot the places that can kill you. I'd remove the infinite checkpoints and replace them with regular ones only because it deducts from actual gameplay and the level overall isn't that difficult.2009-09-25 19:51:00
