Photography Thread (with guess it pictures)
Archive: 99 posts
Ok I started this thread after finding other LBPCentral members that had the same interest in photography as me. Feel free to join and post some pics. As you will see from my photos I shoot almost anything but action and wildlife are my main interest. http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/flyflight.jpg Hover Fly in flight http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/cardinal.jpg Cardinal http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/df2.jpg DragonFly http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/garden.jpg Garden Spider in Web http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/hummer.jpg Ruby Throat Hummingbird http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/shauna.jpg Shauna http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/waterart2.jpg WaterDrop | 2009-09-02 17:16:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
Wow, just wow. I don't personally do photography but I'm looking forward to everyone else posting their awesome photos! (I read the other 'What do you do outside of LBP' thread. ) | 2009-09-02 17:20:00 Author: MarkoWolfy Posts: 445 |
Wow they're amazing. I love photography too but I can't compete with that. You must have a real high-end camera to shoot stuff like that. I don't think my Fuji Finepix is much use with anything like that lol. | 2009-09-02 17:27:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
Thanks. Some of it is high end. The hummingbird, which I obviously cut out of the original scene I took, was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 4500 I believe. Its a point and shoot. The Hover Fly was taken with Canons first consumer digital SLR, which I think was a digital rebel. The bee, which is actually a fly, was one of those shots you are not sure of until you get inside and get it on the computer and say... OMG I got it.. LOL. I have alot more to post but I want to see some others post as well. I have one I got of Pro Surfer Bethany Hamilton. She is a surfer that lost her arm in a shark attack but continued surfing and went Pro. | 2009-09-02 17:31:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
Here are a few from my blog. Many are of animals, but I like taking pictures of all sorts of things. I only have a sony cybershot, but really want to get a really professional camera. I have a few more of sunsets that I will upload when I'm able to! ^_^ I have to apologize, these are associated with my blog entries and some of the things aren't photos, but I don't have my photos on me right now! http://www.kappacino.com/wordpress/?p=228 http://www.kappacino.com/wordpress/?p=135 Kratos4, those shots are GREAT! You're very talented! | 2009-09-02 17:36:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
The leaves picture is awesome. Frame it. The cat one is cool too. | 2009-09-02 17:41:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
I've dabbled in photography on occasion. I don't have much of note on my computer, but I do have a roll (yes, roll) of film I took at the Grand Canyon a few years back. If I could scan them in, I'd post them up here, but I'm not sure where most of them went... | 2009-09-02 17:48:00 Author: dandygandy2704 Posts: 1002 |

Considering my age one would expect I would have used film more than digital but it actually took digital cameras to get me interested. I guess because Im more of an instant gratification type person. Look forward to the Grand Canyon shots. Im about to post some "Guess what it is" type pictures but will wait until someone makes a comment so I dont dinged for double posting | 2009-09-02 17:52:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |

It's a great shot, BTW. How'd you get that? Are you just using a macro lens, or do you have your camera attached to something with a bit more power (ie: a microscope)? | 2009-09-02 18:15:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
It's a great shot, BTW. How'd you get that? Are you just using a macro lens, or do you have your camera attached to something with a bit more power (ie: a microscope)? Some are just a 105mm Macro Lens. Some are that same lens but with another lens flipped around and mounted to the front of the macro lens.. kinda like super macro... Dandelion seems like a good guess, but what in the world is the first picture. I can see the little hooks on the bottom, so it seems like either a bug a some kind of plant seed... | 2009-09-02 18:39:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
Dandelion clock? Nice..... Im assuming this is what you meant. Im not exactly sure of the name but it is one seed pod off dandelion. http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/guess/answer.jpg I have one or two more maybe but they are going to be super easy because I lost the raw files and so I only have the reduced images to work with. | 2009-09-02 18:41:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |

That's it! I thought it looked like one of the single seeds which make up the dandelion clock and which float off when you blow it...not sure what they are called. Fantastic photos by the way, Kratos4 and I loved Moleynator's seaside ones too, particularly the beachhouses and the seagulls in flight! | 2009-09-02 18:46:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |

Wow, kratos your pictures are incredible. The stray cat I wish was my pet: http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/blopwiicade/MyCat-1.jpg I actually spent some time with him when I was on vacation, and he was hanging around the place where I stayed. Probably not the smartest thing to do, but he seemed friendly enough My favourite picture of my own: http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/blopwiicade/flowerisraelselctivecolorizationflo.jpg I made the background black and white. It took a while! | 2009-09-02 20:21:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
Thanks, kratos. You should have seen my face when I looked at that the first time on my computer. Completely didn't expect it too look like that. Really want a better camera to take pictures like the ones in this thread. Love taking pictures of things no-one else seems to take note of or just take picture of the landscape. Problem is anything technological will inevitably break when I get it in my hands, so I just take the cheaper cameras with me when I hiking/tramping (whatever you say in your part of the world). Not that you can't make good pictures with small digital cameras, but you know. | 2009-09-02 20:25:00 Author: Syroc Posts: 3193 |

What a great idea for a thread! Really love seeing people's pics. @Vortex - Superb photos. I agree with the others that the berries, autumn colour and Olympic National Forest ones are just outstanding. Love the atmosphere in the sea stacks one. (What is BWCA , as a matter of interest?) @Kratos4 ? the flower in the photo by highlightnotes looks like a passion flower to me. (excerpt from wikipedia post (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boundary_Waters_Canoe_Area_Wilderness)) The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW or BWCA), is a 1.09 million acre (4,410 km?) wilderness area within the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota (USA) under the administration of the U.S. Forest Service. The BWCAW is renowned as a destination for both canoeing and fishing on its many lakes and is the most visited wilderness in the United States. Pure undeveloped wilderness. A giant chain of lakes each spilling into the next, and a big part of why we (Minnesota) are referred to as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" (actually closer to 13,000) No motorized boats or vehicles allowed. I've taken 15 vacations up there. It is truly God's country. | 2009-09-02 22:48:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
Thanks, V0rtex. You're so lucky. We have very few areas of true wilderness left over here - perhaps the further reaches of Scotland - but otherwise the place is just too small and has too many people! We've still got some nice scenery, though, just not on the same scale as you guys! | 2009-09-02 23:04:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |

We've still got some nice scenery, though, just not on the same scale as you guys! Yeah - I sometimes evangelize on this very subject. I meet people who are residents/natives of this state that have never visited this incredible gem. I ask them if they understand how fortunate they are to live just a few hours from something so grande in both beauty and scale. This often falls on deaf ears, however. Here's one more for ya: http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/v0rtex2002/DC-2006_0920_184657-1.jpg | 2009-09-02 23:13:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |

These photographs are all really really nice! You guys are all very talented! Here are a few more that I've taken. I hope you enjoy them: http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y84/haleybrooks/Photographs/ The ice ones are awesome. Wish I had some snow and ice to shoot. Here are a few I did early on. Its actually a Nikon Coolpix 4500 point and shoot attached to a Mead 90 ETX Telescope. This required manual focus but it works well. I cant remember the exact numbers but I think with the cameras optical zoom in combination with the telescope it ended up being equal to something like a 1200mm lens. http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/pearlcrescent.jpg http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/nuthatch.jpg http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/peewee.jpg | 2009-09-03 02:06:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |

We had a pretty major ice storm a few years ago and the vice president of our company let me borrow his camera. I was sliding around the parking lot with this really expensive camera trying to get as many shots as I could. I'd never seen ice clump to the trees like that! Is that middle bird a Nuthatch? It looks like one. We have a lot of those where I work. I work in an industrial park in the middle of nowhere and we have anything from bears to turkey outside our window at any given moment. I have to get a better camera! | 2009-09-03 02:13:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
@ Kratos: Stunning. Absolutely stunning. All of my work is done with a Fuji FinePix S5200. A nice little point-n-shoot with a 10x optical zoom. I dream of a Nikon D80 (or the D50), but it's just not in the budget. @ Kappa : I love the Ice shots and your butterfly looks as if he's half man (I know... weird, right? but it looks on first glance like he's standing upright and about to walk across the floor). | 2009-09-03 02:13:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |

I have to get a better camera! Yes that is a nuthatch. He was wedging sunflower seeds in the bark so he could get into them. You can see some seed on his beak and below him on the tree, if you look good, you can see the shell wedged in the bark. These shots are from Mississippi where we do actually get snow and ice, I just did not get any while I was still living there. I will try to find the original. Its very cool because at full size you can see the reflection of me and the camera setup in his eye. | 2009-09-03 02:19:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |

@Kratos4 ? the flower in the photo by highlightnotes looks like a passion flower to me. Keep' em coming! Yup, it's a passion flower It took me a really long time to figure out too, cause I don't know my flowers well. I love the ice pictures Kappa! Especially the first and last. | 2009-09-03 02:30:00 Author: hilightnotes Posts: 1230 |
You know, I really wish I could have gotten a photo of the whole forest that is behind my building. During that ice storm, it looked like it was made out of crystal when the sun hit it. (and we all know how much I like crystals ) It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Sadly, I only got those closeups, though. | 2009-09-03 02:32:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
Took this at the 2006 ISA Competition. She lost her left arm due to a shark attack at age 12. Her boards are modified with a strap, which you can see slightly in the photo, that she grabs with her teeth so she can paddle and catch waves. http://www.socalsurfs.com/lbpphotos/bhamilton.jpg | 2009-09-03 14:02:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
Some really nice photos to be found here! I frequently run for my camera if I see something amazing, but lately I've been neglecting it. I need to reinvigorate my inner photographer by buying him a real camera. This is all with little canon compact. Obviously a cheap camera shouldn't be a hindrance to good photography as long as it has even modest manual controls. But seriously, look at a good photo taken with a D90, and the exact same picture taken with a G6 and then cry a salty tear. I'm noticing this is mostly nature stuff! I'll try to fill in the cityscape void a bit. A ton of my favorite pictures seem to be missing, and I am unbelievably unorganized, so I won't bother trying to hunt them down. but here's a small smattering. I'll come back with some more later, better not to post everything at once. Some Vancouver-at-night photos. Note that I didn't have a tripod for any of these, they were snapped in-hand, so expect blurriness! I want to mention that NONE of these are REMOTELY altered - no color correction, contrast changes - these are uploaded directly from the original images - if the color looks startling, believe me, it was more startling in person! 2 Vancouvers beneath a lunar eclipse - on the left is Science World, on the right is the construction site for Olympic Village. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/vancouver_2worlds.jpg Lights in Yaletown. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/yaletown_1.jpg This was a real point-and-shoot taken from inside a car, but the light was striking. This is a point where I curse my camera and long for something with a little more dynamic range. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/morning_light.jpg Snapped during an interesting evening from my apartment balcony. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/wcscommdr019.jpg Fireworks over the city. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/fireworks010.jpg Abandoned at the train station. or someone's on "break". http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i202/teebonesy/shoppingcart.jpg I'll return later with some really cool photos I snapped at Sasquatch Festival this summer! I've also done a ton of cinematography. If anyone would be interested in seeing this stuff, I can post some links to videos, or maybe screen captures? | 2009-09-03 23:38:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |

Unfortunately, thanks to Sony and me, I lost about 90% of my raw image files taken over the past 5 years. The computer I had, which was a Sony PCV-RZ22G, had a nasty habit or restoring to the actual drive that was included with the system. I had figured that out but this past year it slipped my mind. I did a system restore from the factory restore discs and even though I had installed two other hard drives and had the original drive as E:, it still did the restore to that original drive. Yippeee. I had always remembered it did that and would disconnect that original drive but just forgot this time so I take some of the blame but sonys proprietary bs is also partially to blame. Nice shots TB. Those are proof you can get good shots with a P&S. Alot of my nature are P&S in addition to a Meade telescope. The one of the peewee is a good example... 1/20th shutter and manual focus. | 2009-09-04 00:38:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
Oh, I meant to chime in on the macro photography stuff! Isn't macro photography FREAKING FUN?? It's like discovering an entire world that's just barely invisible to us! Getting down close to everything, you begin to learn that we're only remotely in touch with the world around us, with what "things" even ARE fundamentally. My friend and I recently discovered that we have the ability to do some insane macro cinematography by combining a couple of adapters that we normally use to mount Nikon 35mm lenses to our prosumer HD camcorder. I haven't tansferred most of the footage but we got a ton of really amazing hd macro shots of various food colorings injected into water, soda, corn syrup, baking soda and vinegar... We got footage of a light bulb filament lighting up so close you can actually count the tiny coils. We also did a lot of eyeball stuff. Here's a clip of my girlfriend's eye, but you've been warned - this is EXTREMELY close up, and it's not even color-corrected so it has a strong warm bias - this close up, it can be kind of a grizzly sight, so if you're squeaming about veins and pulsing eyeball innards, look away! My girlfriend threw together the edit with text, so I'm linking to the video on her vimeo count. For anyone else curious, it's a very cool sight. The pupil is not a circle. The iris appears to me made of threads, strings. the veins of a "bloodshot" eye are layers deep, and seem to move separately. You can even see what appear to be chemical "gasoline rainbows" on the surface of the eye. EYEBALL! | 2009-09-04 00:46:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |
lol. Road map. That looks pretty cool. I had no idea that we had pulsating eyeballs... | 2009-09-04 00:53:00 Author: moleynator Posts: 2914 |

Wow, some more amazing shots! @Kratos4 - Just love the surfer, the way you have caught her right at the top of a wave so that her vertical accent bereaks the horizontal line of the wave! And @Teebonesy - fantastic night shots. My favourite is the Lights in Yaletown one - looks as if it came straight out of a film by Ridley Scott. The eyeball vid is cool. We did the same thing but a still shot of course and more magnification, the same magnication used on the mesquito. At the magnifcation you could see every detail of the veins and the hairy looking part, well you could see hair looking things on those hair looking things Heres a facial of a fly. Not very pretty but still cool. Of course with this much magnifcation, the DOF is minimal. http://socalsurfs.com/temp/temp2/facial.jpg | 2009-09-04 01:20:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |

Of course with this much magnifcation, the DOF is minimal. http://socalsurfs.com/temp/temp2/facial.jpg Our setup isn't even supposed to be used for macro cinematography, we just sort of accidentally stumbled upon it using cheap adapters stacked on top of each other. But in order to really get in close the camera's got to be zoomed in as well, so we have stacked macro adapters plus a long lens in-camera and the result is a paper-thin DOF, it was astoundingly difficult to get critical focus on our shots. We were able to get far closer than what you see in that eyeball vid - but with the eyeball shots in particular, it was just too **** hard to maintaing critical focus because the eye would move, or my girlfriend would cough and then you've got a blurry shot on your hands. It was just too sensitive to handle, so we had to pull back and get a "full shot" (also known as an EXTREME close up! Wait, what??) The fly is amazing. Actually all that stuff is really cool. I think I mentioned this in another thread, but something I did a lot as a kid when I had this hand-microscope was handwrite MINISCULE notes. I'd take blue-lined notebook paper and use the microscope and the steady hand of a 12-year-old to write completely within just the blue lines. Under the scope, it was perfectly legible! to your naked eye, it looked like just straight lines on a page. Have you taken any macro shots of FOOD? Could be terrifying/enlightening. I would love to post the other macro shots we did... But I've got to hunt them down first! It was my buddy's camera, so he took the P2 cards with him and I only had time to back up the one with the eyeball and a few test shots we did for my short film (it's a tiny tiny brush sweeping a tiny tiny chimney, and then a gigantic face and eye pop up in the background to scrutinize the work). As soon as I can get him to bring that footage over, I'll back it up and throw it up on vimeo or something. | 2009-09-04 02:48:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |

Look for foward to seeing more videos. That is insane!! I've never considered doing that. So simple it's genius. It may be a few days before I can get my hands on that macro footage. So for now I'll keep the thread going with some more good old fashioned photo-graphs. These are all from Sasquatch Festival earlier this year. Incredibly good time had by all. And I agree, Vortex, about my butterfly photo. I found the lens is the biggest factor. You can pick you up a digital rebel 6mp, which is what i took the pic of the hoverfly with, for very little money. Im guessing in the $200 to $300 range. Heck even the lens I had for the hoverfly picture was the kit lens. Its when you want to go long range and/or high speed (low light) lens when the money comes in. You will easily spend more on the lens that the camera body. Personally I prefer Canon over Nikon but either is top notch. | 2009-10-10 03:17:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
I'm a fan of canon cameras, too. when I do purchase a high quality camera, that's what I'll be getting. ^_^ | 2009-10-10 11:02:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
Nikon for me! But that's mainly because I've got a bunch of Nikon lenses already from the analog days of old. I agree completely with what rz22g said - it's not nearly as much about the camera as it is about the glass. fine lenses can make an unbelievable difference. but when it comes to digital cameras, if you're getting ANY DSLR without a fixed lens, you're probably looking at a chunk of change. | 2009-10-10 11:23:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |
I find the razor sharp close-up pics amazing. Try taking a pic of Sackboy on the TV. Close up to really get those pixels XD. | 2009-10-10 11:27:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
Got me a 7D! Debated a while over it or the Nikon D300s. Being the same price, the 7D won with higher megapixel and far less noise levels. This thing takes excellent images at 6400 and even 12,800 ISO. It also does stunning 1080P HD video so I will have some LBP footage on youtube soon. I took this shot with a Samsung TL225 point and shoot, which has turned out to be an impressive performer in both still and HD video. http://www.socalsurfs.com/7DbestBG1.JPG | 2009-12-31 00:27:00 Author: rz22g Posts: 340 |
I almost decided to buy a camera for Christmas... But then i realized i don't want to lug one of those massive ones around, so one i bought wouldn't be great for the arty stuff i would use it for... I invested in my music instead... | 2009-12-31 00:49:00 Author: Unknown User |
