When does the fun stop and announce begin?

OK people! When does a level stop being fun and actually start being annoying!? I hate bad landscaping. When you have to jump so MANY times just so you can make it to this really really small sloped platform.... | 2009-09-02 11:18:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
This depends massively. The actual difficulty of a level vs frustration factor is a complex thing. A difficult section will become more frustrating based upon many factors including the following: Originality. An original challenge will take much longer to become annoying Variation. Is this basically the same obstacle you've faced all through the level or is it something different Checkpoint positioning. Is there a long, tedious or difficult, section between the preceding checkpoint and the point that you die at. Checkpoint positioning. Is there a checkpoint just after a particularly difficult section, visible, so you know you are just one step from safety Visibility. How well controlled are the cameras. IMO a difficult sections become instantly frustrating if I'm fighting the camera angle. Pacing. If I'm basically in the same place for a long time, not moving forward, I'm gonna get bored more easilly Plenty more where that came from, I may add to it later. Balancing challenge vs frustration is very hard, especially considering the large amount dumbing-down of difficulty in this game. The key is to make the level compelling, really draw the player in and encourage them to keep going, whilst at the same time beating them down mercilessly You may want to change the thread title also | 2009-09-02 11:36:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
It becomes annoying when you get to an incredibly difficult part and you're only given a normal checkpoint and you get down to your last life and have to listen to that horrible warning sound. It's even more frustrating when you get past that part and it's miles to the next checkpoint or even worse when they put another difficult part in before you even get another checkpoint. Although a level with bad spelling is instantly annoying to me and if there is lots of bad text to decipher along the way I'll usually quit it anyway. If the creator can't be bothered to spell correctly or use good grammar then I can't be bothered to play their level. BTW in the thread title should it say 'annoyance' rather than announce ? ( no offence lol ). | 2009-09-02 12:31:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |

What really annoys me is bad platforming. That includes: - 1 small grid platform, or every platform where sackboy opens his legs at 60? and tries to stay in an impossible equilibrium. - text bubbles during platforming section, before jumps, grabs, in mid of combos - the camera used to make thing more difficult than they are - irregular platforms that points downward toward their edges, forcing you to jump really earlier, if you want to land the jump. - mad plane autoswitching. - a level hard but not fair, hard just to be tag impossible, for the happyness of its creator Those are all things due to bad designing/dumbness, so...to use mistervista's wise word: Since the creator can't be bothered to make their level playable then I can't be bothered to play their level. I can't agree more with your reaction mrv. | 2009-09-02 14:20:00 Author: OmegaSlayer Posts: 5112 |
I played a level the other day that had a 2x mechanic at the beginning of it. I'm sure that the mechanic worked fine for the person who made the level, but the creator gave absolutely no clues on how to work this mechanic. I had to quit out of the level because no matter what I tried, I simply could not get past the first obstacle. I had two others with me, and they couldn't figure it out either. I think an important thing to keep in mind is "Will other people easily understand this mechanic, or do I need visual clues?" Checkpoints are also very important, as it's been mentioned several times before. The worst thing ever is getting past a very hard part, and then moving on to another hard part, with no checkpoint. If you die, you have to do TWO hard parts again! It gets frustrating. I think another turnoff for me is when people use Maraz_Matari's talking tool 700 times in a row with cutscene cameras. I use this tool myself, but I try to use it as few times as possible, and I try not to use cutscene cameras with it, because I know it is almost a 100 percent surefire way to get me to quit a level. One last thing that makes a level not fun for me anymore is if there is a section of really tiny platforms made out of glass with electricity between them. It's nigh impossible to make these jumps, and it's extremely frustrating. And Omega Slayer, I agree with many of the ones you've posted as well. Text bubbles before jumps are the worst! | 2009-09-02 14:22:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
We had a GREAT topic "What makes a level good" a while ago which is very similar to this topic and had some fantastic feedback - then it was compiled by Coxy.
