Space Sack's Adventures: The Blue Planet (preview!)

Archive: 8 posts

Hi all,

Looks like I'm pretty much done with my new level and I thought a little preview wouldn't hurt. I'm excited about the level but I cannot release it until water is updated.

"Space Sack's Adventures" might be a new series (or maybe not). First level is The Blue Planet and I have ideas for others planets when the time comes. It's mild difficulty level about a little astronaut sackboy wanting to explore the universe. Problem is, he is very unlucky and everytime he lands on a new planet there's trouble. Let's say that he will use most of his time rescuing himself or to recover his ship than anything else but he never gets discourage and always lands on a new planet.

My goals with this level:

-I wanted to surpass myself visually.
-Create an "animated" feeling with the envirronement.
-I wanted an accessible level of mild difficulty but I don't want to hold the player's hand.
-I wanted multiple envirronement and a sense of progression through gaining abilities.
-Good use of the background glitch.
-Releasing this thing as soon as water is there.

So yet again I spent alot of time on this one and I had alot of fun creating it. I only need to add water now so it's kinda sleeping there, waiting to be released. I think this level will adress pretty much any player except maybe real beginners or someone only wanting to play something extremely hard. Lastly, i'm dropping some screenshots so you can see what's the visual style a little. Deco might not be final and to be honest, it looks HORRIBLE with the in-game photos + you don't see that pretty much everything moves/animates. Anyhow, I suppose it gives an idea of the forest/alien ambiance I wanted to create. It's blue-ish, foggy and dark. There's alot of lighting going on.

Looks like I'm in the planning stage of a new level. Just wanted to share the idea and goals with you. I'm curious to know some stuff about your gameplay preferences too.

"The Blue Planet" will be the first adventure for Space Sack (a sackboy wearing... the space suit). I need a contrast from Crazy Train and Sack's On The Beach, I would like to create another very accessible level like Ultra Beginners And Girlfriends.

I want it to be atmospheric and more visual that any of my other levels. I want to surpass myself in graphics this time around. I'm inspired by the famous indy game called Knytt by Nifflas. I want to have something a bit dark but charming and really atmospheric.

Gameplay wise I want some gameplay that is simple and fun. I designed some moving platforms and "grab wheels" parts. So far my drawings are pretty cool.

I would like to know what kind of gameplay and mechanics you like when you feel like playing a simple and straighforward level. I'm curious. Do you prefer grabbing wheels? balancing? jumps? moving platforms? I like pretty much all type of gameplay and your answers might inspire me even more.

Bouncing platforms. The "grab-onto-pieces-of-sponge-to-fall-down-a-long-chute" things you see in one of the Savanna levels is also much fun.2009-09-05 09:05:00

I love levels with a great mixture of platforming that's fun(not frustrating), fast-paced and allows smooth transitions between areas. What really makes me appreciate a level is if it has some very original platforming ideas. They're tough to find these days but if you can think of a cool device that hasn't been seen before, it'll make your level really shine.2009-09-05 11:17:00

That looks very cool!
I like the idea of making a series where each level represents a different planet with different environment... (if you decide to make a series )

The visuals and the atmosphere of this one looks great!
The shapes seems simple but the all thing is really nice looking.

I really like how you made that tree forest background!
Just thinking, according to these pictures, maybe you could add some tree trunks on the foreground too (first thin layer)
so it can add a more depth feeling and create a more dense forest...

Anyway, that's looks engaging, and i'm looking forward to try it
(as it will also means that water will be out )

Ok it's going to be the time to release this soon! I just finished put the water in there and this means the level is complete now. Just a tad bit of decorating left and it's done.

I want to release it maybe tonight or tomorrow. I hope you guys will be there.

Ranger, it is one of my all time favorites-- I loved it. In particular it appeals to the explorer in me...( Oh those hours spent with miss croft..) It is hard, but in odd ways...

The visuals are simple but highly effective... (to the point that I am envious)

The first block you can create though is useless as there are several ways up that ledge...

You did have an excellent obstacle or two though to showcase your Epic Genius! Very nicely done... I need to know is there a prize for aceing it?
