Games that tell great stories!
Archive: 33 posts
Guys I have to say it....... I have NOT played a game with a great story line in over a year!!!!!!!!!! I'm not talking about epic settings, with steampunk machines and rocket ships that are the size of a planet.... no I'm talking about a real story! Something with twists and turns, somthing that will keep you pushing those buttons to try and find out what happens next, the shock and surprise of the twist or waiting to see who betrays you next..... the suspence, the horrer, the joy, the sadness..... I WANT SOME! I love movies..... but they are always too short.... i want somthing that i can cram hours in to.... have lots of late nights trying to find out what happens next. It dosn't have to be suspenceful.... or even action packed! As long as it's a good and thought out story. I loved The Longest Journey.... it's probably one of my most favorite games yet! (although the ending was a disapointment......) the voice acting! The richness of charater and setting! The entire plot was amazing! I also loved Grim Fandango... with the every evolving and lovable charaters. The puzzles... the dialoge.... and most importantly.. the ending.... I just loved the ending of Grim Fandango, it was just soooo well done! It was simple... yet satisfiying.... and it wasn't rushed (like The longest journey). I tried and crammed myself to play Still Life for a while now... but I'm really not going anywhere... the game is just too creepy for me.... Looking at dead bodies for clues at the middle of the night infront of my computer bymyself.... isn't my idea of fun..... I also loved MGS3.... I don't know why... but MGS3 really made me connect with Naked Snake, the pain and suffering that he went through.... I also love the intro of it... how Snake dives from the drop ship.... Anyway.... enough about me blabbering on about the game's I've played... tell me about your games! What games did you think had a great story telling!? | 2009-09-01 12:01:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
MGS3. Crisis Core. FF6. | 2009-09-01 12:06:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
All the MGS constitutes a Huge story. More recently, FFXII. Currently, i am playing Batman Arkhan Asileum, and even if i only played 3 hours, it seems that it will be an incredible game with a great storyline.... | 2009-09-01 12:10:00 Author: Takelow Posts: 1355 |
Heavy Rain | 2009-09-01 12:28:00 Author: Dexiro Posts: 2100 |
I'm gonna go ahead and recommend a DS game. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (I beleive Pandora's Box is also out now in the US) had the most amazing story behind it. Really easy to connect to and you feel like your in the middle of it. And you'll never see the twist at the end coming | 2009-09-01 13:04:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
MGS3 had an amazing story. As did MGS1. I quite liked Shadow of the Colossus' story. Very little dialogue and it left a lot up to the player's imagination but I liked that aspect of it. I haven't finished Valkyria Chronicles yet... not even close actually but the story is fantastic! | 2009-09-01 13:30:00 Author: Burrich Posts: 1018 |

And you'll never see the twist at the end coming The twist at the end of that was amazing xD I believe there's like 4-6 Proffesor Layton games out in Japan already, we're miles behind them! I've just started playing the sequel anyway, looks good so far | 2009-09-01 13:31:00 Author: Dexiro Posts: 2100 |
I loved The Longest Journey.... it's probably one of my most favorite games yet! (although the ending was a disapointment......) the voice acting! The richness of charater and setting! The entire plot was amazing! YAY for norwegian games Anyway, as far as more recent great story games go, i would say Bioshock. That game is like an interactive movie, when you consider the story line, it's just amazing. InFamous, A simply superb story, and there is no way you're gonna see the plot twist at the end coming, just no way in hell. Fallout 3, Stories don't get much more complex and compelling than this, and this game would've probably been great even without the story Due to it's amazing gameplay and realisem. And there is ofcourse Heavy Rain, this game is truely unique in the sense that you basically controll the story, all you're choices will impact how the game plays. Your charecter can even die, and the story will go on from someone elses point of view. | 2009-09-01 15:53:00 Author: Comet Wolf Posts: 99 |
Uncharted is good too It doesn't have the best story but the acting is brilliant and makes it really believable. | 2009-09-01 16:04:00 Author: Dexiro Posts: 2100 |
MGS 4 and 3 Oblivion was good Ratchet and Clank Jak Uncharted | 2009-09-02 00:48:00 Author: creelers Posts: 275 |
to be honest resistance 2 campaign got me curious to think what was going to be coming up next. with all of what happens in 1 it kinda got me hooked to think what would happen. Same thing happend with Gears of war 2 with Dom trying to find his wife that kept me um well suspended to think what was going to happen next | 2009-09-02 00:49:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
MGS 4 and 3 Oblivion was good Ratchet and Clank Jak Uncharted The Ratchet and Clank stories weren't that good xD The storyline to the upcoming R&C game seems really good but with the others the plot twists just seem like excuses to travel to a new planet. | 2009-09-02 01:39:00 Author: Dexiro Posts: 2100 |
My all time favourites which all have great stories: FF7 ( PS1 and now on the store ) Dragon Quest 8 ( PS2 ) Front Mission 3 ( PS1 ) One of the best stories ever but sadly discontinued due to the console being scrapped was Shenmue on the Dreamcast | 2009-09-02 02:38:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
Halo (3) had a decent story. MGS4 has a GREAT story. The 501st storyline in SW:BF2 was very well narrated. SSB Brawl's story was awesome for the fact it contained no dialogue. | 2009-09-02 02:41:00 Author: Astrosimi Posts: 2046 |
Why is everyone talking about Heavy Rain!? Is it out!? I thought it wasn't due to release till 2010!? I love Indigo Proficiencies, and I'm sure to get Heavy Rain as soon as it comes out... in 2010.... I don't know why every one is talking about Valkyrie Chronicles. I've played up till chapter 11... and the story still doesn't get that interesting..... I wonder if it gets any better at the end.... I really want to play Professor Layton series.... but I sadly don't have a DS.... I'm not a portable gamer >.< If they released it for the PC or PS3... then I'm sure to get it! And as for Final Fantasy.... I never could get into it.... I just...can't stand reading text after text after text....... If i wanted to read.... i would go and buy a book (no seriously.... i read books). I can't stand reading tons and tons of dialog in a computer game! It's like I'm watching a silent movie... but in colour >.< I've still yet to play infamous. But Fallout 3 was awesome.... I've yet to Finnish that game but the story is actually pretty engaging. | 2009-09-02 04:45:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
And no ones mentioned Chrono Trigger yet? oh my god that story is awesome A game with an absalutely HALARIOUS storyline is... **drumroll** ... ... ... The Secret Of Monkey Island and in the special edition it has voice acting-making everything even funnier! | 2009-09-02 07:44:00 Author: elzbenz Posts: 86 |
Is it me or are game devs obsessed with OGMMASSIVE PLOT TWISTS? I'm not saying plot twists are a bad thing...It's just that they sort of get tired after a while (MGS2 kinda made the whole thing with Atlas in Bioshock more obvious than it was in the first place.) I mean, it's not like you NEED a plot twist to make a story compelling. Silent Hill 3, to my recollection, had no gigantic twist but still managed to be just as compelling, if not even more compelling than Silent Hill 2's story. And then there are twists that are randomly tacked on and/or just make no **** sense. Case in point: Klonoa...YAY YOU KILLED THE BIG EVIL THING AND SAVED THE WORLD OH BY THE WAY YOU DON'T ACTUALLY EXIST BYE and Bionic Commando...oh god, Bionic Commando...YOUR STUPID HOOKSHOT ARM THAT SHOOTS HOOKS MUST BE POWERED BY A HUMAN BRAIN, SO WE KILED UR WIFE AND USED HER BRAIN TO POWER YOUR STUPID ARM WITH IT AHAHAA!1 oh god it's two in the morning and look what this topic did to me i need to sleepzpzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz | 2009-09-02 09:50:00 Author: UCHU Posts: 73 |
and Bionic Commando...oh god, Bionic Commando...YOUR STUPID HOOKSHOT ARM THAT SHOOTS HOOKS MUST BE POWERED BY A HUMAN BRAIN, SO WE KILED UR WIFE AND USED HER BRAIN TO POWER YOUR STUPID ARM WITH IT AHAHAA!1 The worst part about it is seeing the plot being seeded in rearmed, it retroactivly spoils the game. | 2009-09-02 09:57:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
Silent Hill 2 has a great story! It's so confusing that you just must keep playing! Also, Fallout 2 has a great story as well. And of course: Heavy Rain is one of my must get games. I really enjoy a game with a good storyline. | 2009-09-02 10:02:00 Author: Oerjeke Posts: 234 |
Plot twists are all the craze these days. When someone sees a plot twist they're like ZOMG WATFDHKDJSFDSFS#)"'%)"$&T%YH(#RODFH'(ESNE I must have a plot twist in my game/movie/novel!!!! I played a horrible LBP level that was like "Hi I'm your brother! Go into that factory to save our dad!" "Mwahahha it was acutrally me! Your brother that killed your dad! Mwahahha".... WTF? It actually kinda made me laugh. Really bad plot twists can put a big smile on your face But really people, I think a great plot twist is when they actually give you clues about it, but you never realise it until you acturally see the twist and then when you go back you see all these clues and your like "WTF!? what didn't i see that!? ZOMG! hahaha....." Yeah it's getting late here too...... zzzzz.... | 2009-09-02 11:28:00 Author: snowyjoe Posts: 509 |
Oh yeah, i forgot Gears of war 2, the campaign in that is possibly the best campagin i have played in a first-person shooter. It's got a deep story, great athmosphere, nice difficulty, this is one of the few games i find more fun while they're challenging and ofcourse co-op | 2009-09-02 14:06:00 Author: Comet Wolf Posts: 99 |
Games with good stories? I'm going to be a tool and say anything with the words "Final Fantasy" in the title (aside from Dissidia, but that's a fighting game and who needs a story for a fighting game?). If you want something with twists and turns, go for FFX. Solid plot, likable characters, and some twists you won't see coming. Plus, it has voice acting, so not much reading at all, except for the 10-ish characters that aren't important enough to get voiced and thus aren't important at all. Seriously, go for it. | 2009-09-02 17:00:00 Author: dandygandy2704 Posts: 1002 |
I think my favorite video game story of all time is Final Fantasy IV, followed very closely by Final Fantasy VII. ^_^ | 2009-09-03 02:42:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
for me, as far as great story goes, Final Fantisy 8 is IT! Never before, or since was a video game able to evoke an emotional responce from me like FF8. Absoultely, un-real! | 2009-09-03 03:03:00 Author: swanbrown Posts: 898 |
Man, I've played so few Final Fantasy games... I'm working on IV on my DS but I'm at an annoying spot (Lodestone Cavern FTL ><) so I've just sort of...stopped. FFX and Crisis Core: FFVII are two of the very few games that have triggered emotion in me. Generally I can remain detached during "emotional" sequences, but I swear I almost cried at the end of both games, and that was knowing what was going to happen. (Stupid internet spoilers...) | 2009-09-03 15:36:00 Author: dandygandy2704 Posts: 1002 |
Did I miss it, or has NOBODY mentioned Final Fantasy VI (originally FF3 Stateside)?? This is in my top 2 favorite games of all time (the other being Ocarina of Time), and the main reason for this is the story, the world! It's had a huge impact on me, and was a strong inspiration for me to be a storyteller. I've never in my life played a game in which I was more absorbed, more drawn into the world and story than Final Fantasy VI. I want to second Grim Fandango as well, what a fantastic game. AND Professor Layton! This is a game where most of the gameplay is totally arbitrary - the puzzles usually have little or nothing to do with the storyline. But they're still fun little brainteasers, and you keep playing because you love the setting, and are just totally drawn in. Layton to me feels more like reading a novel. You just pick it up and continue the story, doing little puzzles along the way. Great visuals, great setting. I love the train on the new one. I love any story that takes place on a train, and mysteries are obviously the best. I even wrote my first serious short film (http://www.whoisedwardcole.com) to take place on a cross country train. A lot of the old point-and-clicks had fun stories. The Dig was a cool sci-fi adventure. Did anyone play the Tex Murphy games? Under a Killing Moon's one of my favorite adventure/mystery games, and Tex Murphy's one of my favorite videogame characters. | 2009-09-04 00:31:00 Author: Teebonesy Posts: 1937 |
Actually, now that I think about it, the first Phoenix Wright game tells a pretty great story. I loved every minute of that game. ^_^ | 2009-09-04 03:42:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
MGS4 Twilight princess Fusion Frenzy (LOLZ JK) And a ton of others I don't remember the names to. By the way Heavy Rain is not out yet. I think... | 2009-09-04 04:50:00 Author: chezhead Posts: 1063 |
Dont be a fool!, Get a legacy of Kain game or perhaps all of them | 2009-09-04 21:02:00 Author: BlackToof Posts: 172 |

It's got a deep story, great athmosphere, nice difficulty, this is one of the few games i find more fun while they're challenging and ofcourse co-op I think Gears of War 2 is considered ether 2nd person or 3rd person shooter. But yeh gears of war campaign ROCKED | 2009-09-04 21:29:00 Author: Snrm Posts: 6419 |
resistance got a deep and realy good story and bioshock got it to so if you whant a mistiriouse storie then this 2 games are your deal | 2009-09-05 00:18:00 Author: Unknown User |
Zork Zero. I mean, how can a story get any better than the main character licking the tank of lobsters then licking the lobsters themselves, and proposing them both to taste like 'a tank' and 'a lobster'. Then finding a Jester who has a riddle so you get the key to the door you dont even know exists. Then, when you die by eating the Flamingo food... OH THE PLOT TWISTS! | 2009-09-05 06:26:00 Author: Kog Posts: 2358 |
Oh yeah, the first two Red Alert games. Those were the best... They had a supenseful, quirky, and humorous plot. Then EA ruined it all by erasing everything with the 3rd one.... seriously. The villains in the game went back Ina time machine and destroyed the game's plotline.... | 2009-09-07 17:50:00 Author: Astrosimi Posts: 2046 |
