CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Walt Disney Co. (DIS 25.90, -0.94, -3.50%) said on Monday it has reached a deal to acquire comic book titan Marvel Entertainment Inc. (MVL 48.32, +9.67, +25.02%) for $4 billion in stock and cash.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Personally, I just hope Disney don't butcher the existing Marvel characters.

I thought Marvel had a deal with Universal... I guess that went down the gutter. What I'm interested in seeing is how Disney will fit these guys into their parks and merchandise. Can't really imagine the Hulk giving warm embraces to park guests... 2009-08-31 18:34:00

oh god no. i can see some horrible marvel movies coming... and theyre going to be 'kid friendly'. this could mean no awesome fight scenes D: we all know thats the only reason people go to see super hero movies.

this is horrible news. disney just about kills everything it acquires anyways...

Well that's the end of an era.

Disney will screw this up... guaranteed!!! They are buffoons, and know nothing about the comic industry.

Quote: Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said "adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation."

Unique portfolio? How they plan to fit Marvel super heroes into this so-called unique portfolio befuddles me? I can just see it now, Iron Man swoops in from the skies to take out the bad guys wreaking havoc in the city. Instead of laying waste to the evil-doers with pulse bolts and repulsor rays, he breaks into song and woo's the enemy into laying down their weapons and having a big group hug. Yeah... that sounds like Disney's Marvel hero's to me.

Oh well, at least Iron Man II will be out before Disney takes over and can delay the films opening and screw it all up by editing out all the mild violence and fun stuff.

Really? 4 billion dollars... That could have been to save the starving children in Africa, ONES DIEING EVERY 17 SECONDS.

But seriously? no Disney.. If your so child friendly then save the starveing children.

I hate to shatter some people's dreams, but Disney is a business first and foremost. They have no humanitarian values... or any value other than ROI for that matter. If they are spending 4 billion on something, it is because they expect to receive even more money in the long run. They may show a happy face to their customers to attract sales and peddle their wares, but underneath that sunny exterior lies the cold, unflinching heart of a well-oiled business machine.

I mostly find it hard to reconcile Disney's characters, which are generally one-dimensional, good-versus-evil types with Marvel's more complex, multi-layered, brooding anti-heroes. They seem like polar opposites, and unless they are kept well apart from one-another I get the feeling that something fundamental will be lost in the transition.

One can only hope that the machine has enough sense not to alienate their fanbase in the search for a quick profit. I would hate to have Mickey Mouse suddenly appear in the middle of the X-Men's conflict and tell both sides to just hold hands and sing campfire songs.

All future comic book movies are now destroyed.

Imagine a PG rated version of Watchmen. That's what they're going to do to every comic book they haven't made a movie of already.

Imagine a PG rated version of Watchmen.

That very nearly happened. It was at that point that Alan Moore washed his hands of the project.

I know that they're a business company.
It's just to say that it's a megaton of money.

This could either be really good or really bad.

As long as Disney don't try to control Marvel and just stay out of their way it'll be really good!

Disney have owned Pixar for years but they stayed out of their way so the quality of their movies didn't change. I think Disney just fund Pixar and take a percentage in return.

If the same happens with Marvel it could just mean that we'll be seeing a lot more from them

The Pirates Of The Carribean films are owned by Disney, and they're pretty good.

I don't think much will change.
