Has anyone made a spotlight level without planning the whole thing?

Archive: 34 posts

...to a point... as in they didn't draw out the level or think it all out...
So you made some stuff up like shortcuts? Fine.

I'm just wondering if any decent levels were made without planning.

I have. The level in my sig was spotlighted a long time ago, and it was never drawn out or anything.2009-08-31 04:28:00

Same here. The spotlighted level in my sig was a design-as-I-go (as are all my levels). When I read about all these folks making sketches and designs and plans, I think, "Huh... maybe I should do that." But I know it won't happen - it's just not my style. I have made sketches and notes on particular areas or objects, but mostly it's just a matter of, "Okay... I've got a bunch of thermo left, what should I build next?"2009-08-31 07:24:00

I've never planned anything, 3 of my levels got spotlighted. Some levels you just can't plan in advance...

Yes, it is the case for my "Color of Sound", "The Quest of of the Great Pyramid", "Way of light" and "SpaceOpera". No PLAN!

Basically, the Bearer levels are the only one i planned due to their referencial necessity.

I curse you all......

If i build without a piece of paper in one hand all i get is a bunch of cubes with eye balls attached to them. A every effective way of using an hour of your life

Some of it needed planning, mostly the more complex behind the scenes logic to control scripted events combined with backtracking but very little. I generally started out with an idea for a set piece and then build it. After a while I was looking at a collection of rooms and working out how they might fit together.

My current project requires planning, as I have a semicomplex puzzle mechanic where each puzzle needs planning and analysis in advance.

I think it just comes down to person preference and the way you like to work.

My first 2 Sir Sackboy level were done as I went along and they got spotlighted for some reason.

That was back before I paid any attention to the community and only created for myself....aaaaah, good times!!

Dunno what they were thinking Spotlighting that first level of yours. Never would've happened in my time!

I know, right? But I do have to say that those were different times where the standard was a lot lower, a level like that would not cut it in any way these days!!

The first thing I ever created, "the experiment" level.

LOL XD

Anyway, even thought i don't have any spotlighted levels (yet) i still feel i should voice my opinion. Mostly i just make stuff up as i got, but i also have to think most stuff through before i can start building it, and sometimes when im bored and not even playing LBP, i just play around with random ideas that could work in my head.

sketches and planning on the other hand is probably the silliest thing i've ever heard how would you mesaure stuff correctly? it's not like you have a ruler in LBP, and if you can't measure it properly, it kinda defeats the purpose.

The only plans I've had on my levels involve drawing out logic. I just can't wing that stuff. I do have a "workshop" level where I try out stuff though so it's like a working model for characters or bosses.

Other than that - completely winged levels.

Yep, me too, all done as i go.

I usually know the story elements and scenes i want for each level, but the gameplay linking it all is pretty much trial and error. It often changes during the course of making it too. I don't like to have too much of one element all in one go, if there's too much jumping or shooting in one section i chuck some of it away and put in something else to try and keep it as varied as i can. You can't really plan that, it has to come from just playing through the 1st finished version.

Make it up as I go along.

Of course I have a general idea of where I want things to go. All of my levels were made without any planning. You can probably tell.

Pretty much all of my levels are improvised, and all of my DMC levels have been spotlighted, so yeah. All on the spot.2009-08-31 17:50:00

Mulberry Woods is my only level that was built without planning on paper first. I had some of the major set pieces like the saw mill and saw dozer planned out in my mind, but the rest was built on the fly. I think it turned out pretty decent at the time and it still holds a special place in my heart, but it hasn't aged very well in my opinion.2009-08-31 18:04:00

I mostly make 'em up as I go along. However I do occasionally rely upon the support of sketches or logic diagrams made while away from my PS3. I'll admit I've done a fair bit of LBP doodling during work meetings, and have even designed some Excel models to test logic... I'm just that pathetic.

In those few instances when I draw a section out before hand, it almost never works as I imagined and I have to scrap it anyway. Occasionally it survives in a grossly modified form. And rarely does it land in the level just as planned.

Moving Parts was designed almost entirely on the fly. Nerves of Steel was built on the fly, but I did diagram a fair amount of logic.

Wow... I can't believe some of you make such a good levels without planning!

Maybe I should try building an improvised level xDD
That would probably be my best one

As you probobly know from seeing my levels, I really never plan the story or anything. They always turn out crap... but a few are ok... Meteor and Fire and Ice.

Anyways I am planning a new level... A level where there is complex puzzles that you need 2 people to solve...

Anyway, I'm suprized this many people didn't plan... GrantosUK? Really?

I don't plan anything. I sit down and start putting down materials. Eventually I have a beginning of a level and then I try to write a story around the stuff that I have. I think every level that I have made so far, with the exception of 7 Days (because I worked on that with other people) was stream of consciousness.2009-09-01 02:41:00

Dude's..... don't knock the levels I spotlighted!!!!! I loved the "Accidental Tourist" levels!

Back on topic....

I didn't pre-plan Vertigo or Destiny.... just kind of kept thinking of cool ideas that fit and jamming them in there. I didn't pre-plan Splat Invaders Saga - I built just the beginning and Aer0blue said it was too short and needed cows....

Yep, me too, all done as i go.

Hey... wait a minute... weren't your levels pre-planned..... by GEORGE LUCAS?????

Why don't people believe me

The only thing thats planned is the story.

Actually, "I" believe you - when I was creating the Starship Troopers construction site and painted myself into a box.... then as an afterthought put an elevator up the back because I was too lazy to rethink the area - I thought "hey, THAT'S how he does it!!!!"

LOL, nothing against you cub! But just look at the older spotlights and how much the LBP levels have evolved and have grown in terms of overall level quality.

Some just don't age very well, in this case: My first level.

Any similarities Between Julesyjules levels and whatever George Lucas film your talking about is purely coincidental.

I guess my trilogy was pre-planned by Hans Christian Andersen in that case. I'm sure he would have been as pleased as I was to have been Spotlighted!!!

The only thing I planned was that Rhy would do the concept art and Khalith would add the music!! Other than that I just blundered my way through the whole thing!

What! did someone say that would explain it!!!

Did I ever mention that I used to be terrified of that book when I was a kid. I have very vivid memories of my father reading it to me when I was about 6/7 and been too scared to go to bed afterwards. You have helped me overcome a childhood fear
