Left or Right?

Everybody knows how the sackboy/sakgirl is always running right, an usually, we are going right. So this is just some thing that i noticed i do, If i spawn in a level, my instinct is to go right. because thats usally the only way to go, But when i can go left, even if i see a wall there, no matter what, i will go left. Does anyone else seem to do this?2009-08-31 00:22:00

I think it's just deeply rooted in the fact that we read from left to right, and platformers of the past generally followed suit. Think Mario... it would be weird to play Mario from right to left.

A good example of how what you're saying is true is to watch someone play Meerkat Kingdom for the first time. I'm sure most people found the secret area off to the right before they went to the left, where the rest of the level is.

Yeah, I always go left at the start of the level, it's because I don't want to miss any of the level.

The camera is the same if you walk left. It's just because it feels less natural.
It's just a question of habits anyways. We write from left to right, we code from left to right, Mario was played from left to right so all the rest followed.

In 2d it's my head think from left to right, seriously. lol
But fighting the norm is awesome. We should make more levels that scrolls left.

Surely this stems from a lot of us being Westerners, with latin-derived language that reads left to right. IDK how significant that is, but just about everything feels more natural flowing to the right to me.


But fighting the norm is awesome. We should make more levels that scrolls left.

Yeah, I tried with Setbacks, but all of my designs evolved left to right, and then when I tried reversing them it all felt wrong. The only reason anything flows right to left in that level is because I physically ran out of space

All my new level designs are sketched out left to right as well

Yeah, that's why I'm adding loads of invisible dark matter and hazzards so people can't escape/ find flaws with the level I'm currently making.

I'm probably not as good if I was to go left in a level because I'm used to pushing the stick to the right. In the level I'm making now though, the second half is going left and up.

in LA 1, i make you start in the middle and choose left or right.
i always choose left first but that might be because of the left-right conditioning even if i am moving towards the left.

in LA 2 you have to go left.

It's intresting how, pretty much every game moves towards the right for some reason.
Even if they arn't developed in the West.

If you look at Western advertising, they read left to right and displaying their product at the right hand corner.
If you look at countries that read right to left it's the opposite.

But for some reason with games, this dosn't apply..... very strange........

It's like how people who are born left handed have to adapt to use things like a computer mouse or anything other that uses the right like an accelerator pedal in a car and can end up using both for different tasks; people are too used to going to the right in games now.

I usually go left first too, I like to explore the whole level so I won't miss anything good or any score bubbles . That said, all my levels make you go right, I think the only one of my levels that has anything to the left at the beginning is Assignment: HouseWork.2009-08-31 04:24:00

I go both ways to look for hidden treasures. If I've gone the "right" way, I'll immediately turn around and backtrack looking for extra goodies.2009-08-31 05:50:00

I try to create both ways quite a bit. Definitely in FT2 this is evident in the fact that the whole level is circular and you end up finishing at the scoreboard that you fly over at the start.2009-08-31 10:15:00

All of my levels have you going left and right throughout, but I usually start players out on the left and let them run to the right. Only with Manufactured Madness did I switch it up and have them start on the right and run left. In fact, the player runs to the left throughout most of that level, with the exception of the final bus sequence.2009-08-31 18:10:00

I think a portion of this subconscious tendency might have to do with the fact that the game automatically places the entrance gate at the leftmost section of the level. Some people simply move it up and start building. I personally go left if there is room to, just to check for secrets.

(A good example of this is in The Unfair Platformer 2, though it wasn't particularly a welcome secret. )

Anyway, the level im working on right now will scroll from the right to the left. Mostly because i started making the plane on the right side, and since i made the plane fly across the level, i didn't have much choice

OMG!!!! I just got an epic idea, how about a camera that is always moving to the right on a platform level. sort of like some of the mario levels, where falling outside of the moving camera kills you. Has this ever been done? Just think about it, it's so easy to make, just make a thin layer object with a camera on it and some gass just outside the veiw area of the camera, also attached to the thin layer object. Then move it by wheels or pistons.

im just full of ideas today XD

It's been done. There is one in Story Mode as a survival challenge, with a jetpack and loads of electric obstacles. LittleBigPSP does this as well, and I'm sure there are hundreds more that I haven't played.

That hasn't really been done though because it was the whole area moving. If you have one whole object that has gas on either side and a camera i the middle that moves away from sackboy then it would be quite unique.2009-08-31 20:09:00

I've seen numerous levels like this.

They normally make you move left to right as well.

Good, cause that is where I hid my extra points. If you see a level pointing right try going left.

On topic: Most of the levels I build snake around anyway, so it doesn't matter where I start eventually there will be a section where you go left (or right.

Is there really a difference though? They have the same end effect. Also, there is one on the Cool Pages right now called Little Big Planet on PSP, by dan-westy I believe.

I've played it. There is a slight difference in physics and stuff but not much.
