Skynet is coming...

Archive: 17 posts

I saw this video somewhere and thought that the other nerds/geeks on lbpc would appreciate it. Skynet seems all but inevitable now...

YouTube - High-Speed Robot Hand

Watch the whole thing, as the last two are the most incredible.

That was really amazing. I could do with one of those around the house.

But we havn't got to the stage where they can solely think for themselves. So we're still safe.

Well, we still need to make a defensive computer system that is complicated enough to gain some degree of self thought, and launch war on mankind...

Though that begs the question- what would Skynet do if it won? It was a defense computer- a war machine, pretty much. It was designed to kill. What, would it make a new society of robots? Or would it just cause two of its own factions to war with itself?

Very good question. They would probably just shut down and stand there, lol.

Or, would they go after all the world's animals as well...?

Someone refresh my memory, as I'm a bit hazy... Why exactly did skynet decide to kill all humans? I'm having a hard time remembering because of all the "I, Robot" and "Eagle Eye" type movies that have come out since.

Something tells me not many animals survived Nuclear Armageddon/ the Robot War :/

skynet decided to kill all humans because it was coded well enough to gain some sentience.

As to why it had to kill all humans when it could think for itself... It was a war machine. It had control of thousands of nukes. What ELSE would it have done?

what would Skynet do if it won? Probably set a juggling school, judging by this...

Skynet became self aware and then launched a nuclear strike. I don't see what's missing from that. Reminds me of the underpants gnomes...

Step 1: Gain self awareness
Step 2: <big pause>
Step 3: Kill everything!

Seriously though, this looks a lot like the work that Ishikawa (can't remember first name) has been doing for a few years. Many of the same applications here plus cool stuff like catching eggs and batting (baseball). In fact it's even the same hand, or an almost identical design.

No, I never saw the newest one. Therefore, there's probably a large chunk of reasoning missing...

@rtm - ha ha. I laughed out loud about the gnomes, even though I have no idea what you are talking about.

The underpants gnomes from southpark had a somewhat interesting business model

Step 1: Steal Underpants
Step 2: <big pause>
Step 3: Profit.

I thought it linked quite well with the big logic gap that we see with skynet

Upon further digging, it would seem that all of this stuff is actually from the Ishikawa Kumoro Laboratory at he University of Tokyo. Either that or someone has reproduced the same experiments using original AI systems.

Either way, more videos of the same and similar stuff can be found at

Do I win the King Geek award now for being able to accurately recognise a particular robot hand?

Ohhh and this just reminded me of something else. The Shodow Robotics Company have a freaky Robot Arm that is highly anthropomorphic (it's even got muscles). Found a youtube video:

YouTube - Shadow Robot Hand Manipulation

Note some of the smoother movements on that are remotely controled by a human wearing a glove - but it's still cool
