MGS4 ... woah - talky!

Archive: 27 posts

I'm probably not alone in thinking the MGS series is a bit special. Tons of innovation, great plots, superb action, stellar visuals and a killer voice cast.
All fair points.
But why did Hideo get so darned chatty???
I mean come on, those cut scenes are all well and good but by the end of the game I was almost laughing! The final segment must have lasted about 50 minutes!!! It was over complicated, revisionistic (no spoilers here, but important facts were twisted all over the place, including people who were dead NOT being dead - a very annoying plot point!) and butt-numbing.
I love the synergy between cut scene and action and there were some blinding segments in this game, but I sincerely hope Hideo's next project (if he doesn't retire first) will be something a little more gamer-friendly.
My two cents - let the knives be drawn...

I loved the cinematic. I love a great story in games. MGS4 and the halo trilogy have great stories.2008-09-14 11:41:00

You're absolutely right. I think the cutscenes were way too long and way too many. But I have to say that when you got into the gameplay, it was great.2008-09-14 12:06:00

I went into the game prepared for very long cut-scenes and had finished MGS3 a few days previously (and watched all the cut-scenes) so I was in the MGS zone. While a game shouldn't require you to be in a "zone" to play and enjoy it, IMO MGS is special and I am more than willing to give it the extra attention and prep it needs in order to enjoy it to full capacity.

Also I think the MGS4 cut-scenes were the most enjoyable to watch in any MGS and had far less problem with them than I did with any other MGS. The mission briefings were overly long and the end of game cut-scenes were extremely long but I honestly didn't mind all that much.

Actual the last cutscene was 1 hour & 10 minutes. Me & my friend counted, Go Figure. I still loved the cutscenes though, some of the best video game cutscenes ever.2008-09-14 14:30:00

I got exactly 60 minutes for the last cutscene, I timed it. Did you include the credits when you timed it?2008-09-14 17:17:00

Well being the last MGS game with snake I thought the cutscenes are needed to make sure you ended the game well. Do you think we will see a new MGS game?2008-09-14 18:16:00

Mhm, I actually hope there'll be another one. But not for a while.
But of course, it won't involve Solid Snake <_< It'll involve Big Boss. (As one of the interviews said)

That's the thing with MGS; if you play it you have to be prepared to watch marathon cutscenes. But I suppose you're kinda right, Kojima overdid it. A tiny bit. It only added to the amazing epicness though =P2008-09-14 20:10:00

People complain so much about MGS4 and games like Xenosaga.

Listen, remember the RPG games you used to play? With all of that text? This is the same deal, except with moving characters and voices playing.

PS: I'm not directing this towards anyone in specific, just in general, to those who complain about it. >.>

All good points guys, all good points.
But come on.
There were dozens of well integrated brilliant cutscenes and DOZENS of over-long, non-expansive technobabble-spouting diatribes. I've followed this series since Metal Gear on the NES (anyone else?) and love the wealth of plot and intrigue, twists and turns, but I still think Hideo got it wrong in places. MGS3 suffers in the same way and the end of MGS2 started to derail slightly.
An HOUR long end segment!!! Half the length of a movie for <SPOILER> a cak looking wedding ceremony, a failed suicide and weird family reunion and ... oh, don't even get me started on Big Boss...
The in game segments were awesome - from the boat and bike segments in europe to the B&B battles. It was just those occasional 'lecture-like' scenes and the entire ending that grated!
I love the game, love the series, but it was not without faults. Not a perfect 10.

Big difference with text vs voice is that I can read through a wall of text alot faster then it can be spoken.

I just think that the metal gear series is it's own type of game, it is going to have long cutscenes. It has a story in it and I agree that it seems like alot of it and it most likely was but you go into the game knowing this, it is not like it is new to the series, it is part of MGS.
I also think this being the final one for Hideo and for Snake they were making sure to end it right. I think MGS3 ran into this because it was suppose to be his last game also and instead he went into MGS4. So I understand why there is all the need for the cutscenes.
But also remember there is going to be a alternate ending in December so there is more coming.

An alternative ending??? But no extra gameplay, right? Well, as long as it's a free download I'm in. If you have to pay for that then nooooooooooo way!2008-09-15 15:57:00

No there is no download, it is in the game but time sensitive at the end of this year it is suppose to allow you to play a final ending, that is at least what I have heard.2008-09-15 16:28:00

Interesting.

A article from E3, well not E3 but from the Tokyo show. Hikemo announced there is a alternate ending and it is released in December, it is is already there but the game keep tracks of the date so you cannot adjust the PS3 date to make it work.

Now it could be wrong but I read a article in July about it. I didn't actually see him to know if he said that or not. I hope it is true.

I don't agree with that at all. The gameplay of all MGS games has been some of the most enjoyable gameplay I've ever played. To say it is an interactive movie with gameplay elements IMO is a disservice to the game.

MGS games have always been extremely story driven, more so than any other game if you take into account the ratio of gameplay:story. And I wouldn't have them any other way .
