A Flashlight powerup (and other ideas)

While planning out a new level I'm working on, I thought up how cool it'd be to have a flashlight sackboy can hold and aim. Don't know if it's been mentioned before. Here's my ideas:

-You get the powerup just like any other
-The control would be the same as the Paintinator, just aim with the Right Stick
-You can click R3 to turn the flashlight on and off
-It could be used in conjunction with the Paintinator, there would be an animation where sackboy attaches the flashlight to the gun like a scope
-Maybe click L1 to be able to adjust brightness to 3 levels

It'd be sooo great for horror/scary/dark levels. I really hope MM has thought of this, I want it really bad. I hope it happens one day.

Oh yeah, one more thing:

-Have separate hearted lists for different levels in Create Mode
-When hearting something, be able to choose if it's for across all lists, or just that level's specific one
-So common stuff like sponge, lights, etc. will always be on your list

I don't know if anyone else would agree with this one (it's really not a big deal, just a little idea I'd like) But whenever I start a new level, I find myself deleting a lot of materials I used constantly before, but don't now for the current level. I like to keep my lists as un-cluttered as possible.

EDIT: Just thought of something else, a gun that shoots plasma.

-It'd be fun to shoot each other!
-Maybe you tap R1 and it shoots a slow moving but large plasma ball
-And if you hold R1 for like 2 seconds it shoots a fast moving but smaller plasma ball

I love the flashlight idea, that would be awesome! Mulder and Scully ftw!

As for plasma guns, I've always wondered why the paintinators didn't have a sackboy vulnerability setting on them, seems a really obvious thing to have done.

I've always wanted a flashlight, it would expand the possibilities you have when making a level.

It's only bound to arrive one day... hopefully.

I definitly agree to the flashlight idea. Hopefully it will happen one day. I can easily think of many nice uses for it. Aside from just being able to see in the dark (thinks Silent Hill, shining it and seeing the creatures), it can be used to solve puzzles, it could have a setting where you can have enemies react to it like shine the light towards the enemy and it stays away, also it could be set to a limited time so that it goes out after a set time, so to sum it up . . .

1) Can see through the dark and strength can be set.
2) Can solve puzzles.
3) It can have a setting where enemies or certain things react to the light, like enemies won't pursue if light is shined their way.
4) It can have a time setting so that it will go out after the set time. This idea is my favorite.

What does L1 do? I can't think of anything off the top of my head that it would do in Play Mode.

L1, shows the players name/s above their heads.

Oh yeah, I forgot L1 did that. I guess Triangle then, or some other un-used button.

As for s3xN's comments, those are all great ideas. There could be a 'Flashlight Switch' that works just like Mag Keys. The flashlight is the like a player-controlled Mag Switch, and when it comes across a Flashlight switch, it can activate whatever you want it to.

The time setting is a nice idea as well. Maybe even have battery powerups. Using a lower brightness saves more battery. It could pose problems if you run out of juice, but I think making the batteries infinite it could work. As in you get the battery power up, and have to go through a dark platforming area, if you run out of juice and can't see and die, you can go back and start with the same amount of battery power. I would of course like that to be an optional thing.

Jedi_1993: I didn't really think of that, having them both at the same time would be really cool though. Simple solution: be able to tweak the flashlight to allow Paint/Flash compatibility.

I suggested this update earlier but that's fine
I'd also like to have a melee weapon power-up. Not a sword or something else that has clishe written all over it but a STEEL PIPE or a CROWBAR or a BASEBALL BAT would be just pure awesome! Paintinator can get really boring in a really short time

I think melee weapons have a very good chance of happening.

It'd be easy to implement, and would open up tons of new doors for gameplay.

i think gas that acually moves lol i can move gas wheverer with a piston no problem but for something i thought of doing it doesnt seem to work with a winch unfortunately so my idea was scuppered bad times2009-08-31 15:14:00

Where the hell did the gas comment come from. You can move gas with winches though BTW. And as for a crowbar as a melee weapon.... You know what game we're talking about right?



Anyhoo. flashlight for the win, but they should call it a torch

This is agreat idea. Although I think it'll be better if its kept simple.

A single powerup, which you collect like the paintinator and jetpack. Can't use it with any others (which is a shame, but Mm have said its better to keep powerups seperate). You aim with the right stick. You get a Light Switch which activates when light shines on it. And after 30 seconds or so (make the time customisable) the light will go out (best way to get it back would be to go through another powerup to recharge it, like with the paintinator. I don't really see the point turning it off or altering the brightness with extra button presses.

I can think of lots of uses already...

This is a really great idea in my opinion (the flashlight). It could make dark levels feel a million times more immersive and engaging than they are.
I agree with nuclearfish that simple would be better though. I think they should have a simple flashlight powerup, not able to attach to the paintinator, and with a similar 'empty' mechanic as the paintinator where you can set a limit on the juice.


EDIT: I just understood what Nuclearfish meant by a lightswitch. I really like that idea as well! For example, if you're searching a cave and your flashlight goes over a body, you can have it pop up with a message "Goodness! It's the ambassador! He's DEAD!!! *SHOCK*"

I guess the 3 level brightness change is unnecessary, but I think the ability to turn it off would be a great addition. If you get to a part where you don't need the flashlight, just click it off. And the 'light switch' is what I was trying to say in a previous post. It'd be perfect.

The lantern would be more of an led-style light and a flashlight would be more of an aiming type thing.

This idea is still possible. Having some sorta move-able object with a light on it... and moving it around somehow with a wiggle bolt?

But it would also be cool as a powerup.

It would be nice to have a flashlight, but:

I like the idea of the flashlight, but the seperated hearted list would really work for me

Also the plasma gun - Just another way to be annoyed by people who like to kill their friends, but I would love it if it could be used for other things

I don't see how it's too big, just make it to scale. It'd be like 1/2 the size of the paintinator.

And LBP can be whatever genre you want.

OK so you are in the dark ruins of a city... things ablaze... Then you walk into an old factory and you hear something... you shine your light over and see just a scrap of metal... when you move the flashlight away it moves towards you.. then BLAM! It flays at you and kills you!

hm some things sound more reasonable than others...

-flashlight, sure
-lantern, why not
-battery duration, yea
-light brightness setting?...why?
-attach to gun. lets keep it simple


now for my own ideas

-maby a tweak that limits the length that the light shines to
-light sensor switch
-creature option: afraid of the light
-creature option: afraid of the dark
-mirrors to reflect light

I agree on the flashlight, that's very smart and interesting. Don't get me wrong about water being cool but because of water mm hasn't made anything cool in ages. Although, I do think it should be kept simple to a point, since I don't really see why you need to have brightness settings, although it was a really cool idea. Also the Paintinator probably shouldn't be mixed with the flashlight, you could have a friend shoot while you provide light. Battery power with a meter to show the juice level, batteries to replenish your power level, and the ability to turn on and off are definite musts. It should also be turned on and off with an unused button, like triangle or R3, not R1 or L3, because then you could still grab stuff and switch between moving your head and hips. And as for the torch..another great idea, because then you could see a creator-set distance around you without aiming-you could also use the right stick to move it around and give you a bit more vision distance in a certain direction.
