Ratchet And Clank: A Crack in Time

Archive: 163 posts

Is anyone else as excited about this game as i am?

R&C is one of my favorite series, and it was what introduced me to the Ps2 when i was reluctant to try it at first.
I remember being completely obsessed back then, so much so that it's kind of scary thinking back on it.

And when i finally thought the series was starting to dry up Insomniac threw so much more onto the table!

This game is having completely non-linear levels, with tons more secrets to explore (i know i sound like an ad but i love exploring!), they seem to of stepped up the animation so a lot more personality shows through, and the story actually sounds really interesting this time!

And there's a lot more smaller new things that they're adding that are getting me even more excited

Also it was announced today that the space travel would become much less linear! (yay more exploring)
There's a video of it here if you haven't checked it out yet.

YouTube - Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time - Space Exploration Walkthrough (SonYou.nl)

Sadly i think this is the last in the series, but it could just be the end of the current story arc.
Either way they really are planning to go out with a bang!

What do you guys think about all of this?

Fix'd.

I was a big fan of the first PS3 version, but I never played the DLC game. This sounds pretty cool, though. Thanks.

Edit: the small moons remind of me of Super Mario Galaxy a bit.

I've heard about these constructo weapons but don't know what they are

I'm gonna look it up now, it sounds good!

Thanks for the fix didn't realise

The small moons appeared on one the old R&C games too, i guess they beat Nintendo to it!

There were things similar to small moons in an insomniac museum in a past game, but I don't think it was actually in any of the games.

Speaking of Insomniac museums, does anyone else agree that those things are some of the coolest extras ever in a video game?

The museums were one of my favourite parts of the game!
I was sad to hear that that wasn't one in ToD, i'd imagine they'll put one in ACiT though since they're really going for it this time

I remember the small moons in the museum as well, they said they made people a bit dizzy because the camera was all over the place

Oh and i've just checked out the constructo weapons, they look really fun but i'm still more hyped about the exploration!

I thought it was just the last in the future story arc.

Hmm you could be right!

I just didn't think there was much of a story arc since there was only 2 and a half games. Now i think about it though...

Has anyone plated Quest for Booty yet?

I've been questioning whether i should get it or not, at half the price of ToD i'm expecting to get half as much but from the reviews it sounds like i'll be getting much less.
For ?10 i want more than an hour of content.

You should probably rent it and check it out sometime, as it was a real blast. I never played the old ones but it was really enjoyable. That is if LBP will willingly come out of your PS3. It's been in mine for over a month straight now, and I've got about 14 games.

@Dexiro - I have not played it, but I've read that it was pretty good. Sorry I can't be of more help .

I just read the plot summary Cheap solution to me.

I actually wasn't as fond of Tools of Destruction as i was of the past ones as the weapon choice was a bit more limited. Still a ton of fun, but with less turning enemies into farm animals

Because it's so long since i last played the PS2 games it's hard for me to compare them but there's definatly a lot that i miss.
And the weapon selection was pretty naf, they all just seemed like remakes of older guns.

Still had loads of of fun though, and i thought it was a lot harder than previous games.

yea, it was a lot harder, but thats a good thing as far as i'm concerned Its no fun when its too easy, incidentally that was another problem i had with this one, the Ryno was too easy to get XD

I'm looking forward to the selection of weapons for this game though. Constructo mods seem to add a lot of gameplay strategery, and the other two weapons i've seen (the burping thing, and the blade of doom or whatever its called) look rather original.

The burping thing seems kind of like another Blitz Cannon, but at least it's not a direct copy like the Shard Reaper.
I'm sure there's a lot more cool weapons, i think they're announcing some of them in a few weeks.

I wasn't saying it was bad, i'm just saying it's better than what they did for ToD

Hmm one of my favourite weapons was the lava gun, they should bring that back
It shot a cool looking stream of lava, but then the gun upgraded into the boring meteor launcher that was just like any other gun.

yeah, the meteor launcher sucked. I loved the lava thing because of the range it had, i'd flip all over the place, spewing molten lava at anything that looked remotely sentient... good times...

If i had to pick a favorite R+C weapon, it would probably be the tesla launcher or the bouncer... fun stuff.

I'm also looking forward to a new infusion of skill points (and trophies, but i care more about the skill points ) Insomniac pioneered achievements/trophies, and it was good.

We should be getting a bouncer-ish upgrade for the constructo weapons!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the trophies as well
They work great in non-linear games, and this game looks very non-linear.
I prefer trophies to skill points as well because i prefer to be told what to do instead of doing random things through a level and hoping to be rewarded for it.

I just hope they don't mess up the trophies though.
A good trophy is something like "Complete all side-quests" or "Find all Gold Bolts",
a lot of developers have things like "Kill 5 enemies" or "Complete level 1" which are terrible and might as well not even be there!

Surely the trophies will be the skill points. R&C was one of the first games to add these kind of unlockables, they most probably influenced the devs to make achievements and trophies.2009-08-29 13:08:00

Spyro 3 had skill points

They were like hidden away in the menu somewhere though, i didn't realise they existed until i'd almost completed the game!

Same developer though

I am so amped for this thing to come out. I seriously just want to fast-forward myself in time by two months just to get this game.

I've saved the money and everything!

Also, an IGN preview guy stated that there was indeed going to be an Insomniac Museum... but only after you collected nearly everything in the game and fought some gargantuan deathbot.

Insomniac and naughty dog used to be my favorite developers. sometimes i find it hard to seperate teh two (especially with teh PS1 demo trading they did). Wonder if they're still as close now that spyro and crash aren't their intellectual properties.

And Yay for museum I thought i heard that multiplayer was definitely a no go.

I remember one of the R&C games having a huge poster of Jak and Daxter once so it definatly wasn't just with Spyro and Crash.

I hope they have something similar in ACiT!

I know we are getting a ultra hard boss that you face for completing the game on challenge mode, that should be interesting.
It sounds like they're putting a lot of optional really difficult challenges in this one for the 'hardcore fans' as they put it

Right, I'll sum up the end of ToD for you.

After defeating Tachyon, the duo return to Talwyn's fortress for relaxation. But, then, Clank is abducted by the Zoni. It's rather cliffhangery.

Insomniac released a demo of the clank gameplay in the playstation store, they said that they would also release a ratchet demo before the game releases in stores.

Ah so there is a RaC thread.

Played and totally beaten the entire series(except Secret Agent Clank, I have to redo it, cause some of those last skill points are impossible on challenge mode)

I was a tiny bit disappointed in Tools of Destruction cause some of the weapons were more like a downgrade or equal of its predecessors like the Combuster and the judicator, and the idea of having combat devices only available at certain vendors, was a turn off (cause i like to goof off with the fun stuff).

Crack in Time does look much better and I got my hopes up. I'm hoping the returning weapons will get a bit better this time. The customizable weapons, don't look that great for example after seeing a video of all the shotguns parts, it looks like the only combination I like acts like the Shard Reaper from Tools of Destruction

The Open World Space Flight looks amazing! I really hope it turns out great. My guess is this will be my 2nd favorite in the series (1st being Up your Arsenal, Least favorite being Going Commando, so many weapons and almost all of them were weak). I already got it pre-ordered and if there's a midnight release and there hasn't been any break in the release, I'll record it on Youtube.

Ratchet & Clank is better than any Mario everyday hands down.
Too bad the critics doesn't think this way.
This game deserves a storm of 9s but it will be stuck on a 8,3 rating.
Seriously, people who reviewed and gave it a 7 should stop gaming.

I like Ratchet and clank, not love, like.
I do praise the heck out of Insomniac for pretty much being the one of the only guys still bringing me my favourite genre: platforming.

So I will buy this one when it gets released, because platformers (even if its 50% shooting) should be supported to add some diversity to a world ruled by generic first person shooters.

It's the mark down for "more of the same" that annoys me, every series that has sequels is mostly more of the same with a few new things thrown in.

You do have a point, there - but I can understand where the critics are coming from. Insomniac's been using the same formula for seven long years, and depending on your play preferences this could be good or bad.

Still, I don't see reviews for this game going any lower than 70. It's just too good.

A game must be judged primarily for the fun factor, then you must note if it's technically up to par with the current gen games.
If the game is fun (check), it's great looking (double check), people CAN'T review it lower than 80/85, otherwise they should go collecting horses' poo instead of reviewing videogames.

I totally understand where the critics are coming from.

Innovative games get top marks even if they are kinda rough around the edges. Uninnovative (???) games lose marks even if they are really really well polished. That's a good thing, it encourages innovation and discourages stagnation.

The last R&C game I played was great, but I'd score it as 75%, against the first R&C whcih I would score at 100%, for blowing my mind.

A lot of the ratchet and clank games are more of the same really, but with ACiT it seems like Insomniac have really tried to pushed the game forward.

I can't think of anything else they could change without it becoming a completly different game.

From what i've seen the ratchet gameplay is a lot less linear and based on exploration, and clank is slowly becoming more of a main character instead of just a side-kick
There's 2 big changes to the gameplay, and then we have constructo-weapons and space exploration, along with a load of online capabilities and trophies.

I don't see how this could be rated lower than a 9

you're lucky enough to not be a reviewer
as I said, reviewers forget the fun factor, otherwise GTA IV wouldn't have a 98 on metacritic.
I hoped that LBP could have changed the perception of fun in games nowadays, but I was wrong.

I heard that they originally wanted to name it "Clock Blockers" to keep up with their raunchy and suggestive titles.
(Going Commando, Up You Arsenal, Size Matters, Quest For Booty)

lol you noticed that too? I think they did keep their raunchy and suggestive title - "A Crack in Time"

I think I'll be pre-ordering this today and picking it up tomorrow.

EDIT - correction, I just pre-ordered it at Gamestop with the extra level bonus and I'll be picking it up tomorrow

The funny thing is that they say R&C doesn't have enough new stuff, yet it seems to still be more original then all the FPSes around these days O-o

A problem, I think, is that the basic premise of as crazy guns as possible was so set in at the beginning, that any improvements actually plausible would be to weapons and platforming- and since new and crazy weapons have been the mainstay since the beginning, every new addition is "more of the same" because the "same" was NEW to begin with. Get my point? ;o

anyway, never played any besides Size Matters and a bit of Quest for Booty... I can't tell you how excited I am for tomorrow, as I still haven't even SEEN R&C really =D

Well, when i think theres "more of the same" with R+C, i generally think about the typical weapons. In just about every game (can't say every, as haven't played size matters) you'll see:
generic shotgun
generic blaster
generic sniper rifle
generic rocket launcher
etc.

Now while i admit it would be kind of hard to do a shooter without these weapons, it also gets a little disheartening when a majority of the weapons are "more of the same".

But, they have real talent for creating a great game nonetheless. preordered, etc

The only real thing that bothered me is that they were bringing many of the weapons from Tools of Destruction back. I would've liked to see a new rocket-launcher-esque weapon (perhaps something involving energy or plasma?) or something else besides a customizable shotgun. A customizable turret? 2009-10-27 01:28:00

For me the choice was easy. R&C hands down. Borderlands can wait until I (hopefully!) get a new PC by the end of the year. I have a couple friends who want it for the PC, so I might join them.

Yes but I have been anticipating Borderlands for months.
I think Borderlands has more replay value but Ratchet and Clank is more creative. Seeing how fast I finish most games, I'm leaning toward Borderlands.

So has anyone, you know... played it yet? I picked it up this morning before school and had a chance to play it for an hour on my spare. Dude... this game is amazing, it has a perfect mix of platforming and shooting, much better than Tools of Destruction. The game immediately puts you amidst the action and it doesn't ever let up. The environments are also amazing, everything is colourful and absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, that hour is all I'm going to get in today due to work. Anyways, everyone should pick this up!2009-10-27 19:38:00

Right, so I have finished the game. I promise that I will not spoil anything for you, except that the ending sequence will shock you three times.

Three. Times. Two plus one.

But anyway, the game itself is really really really really good and you should pick it up. The gameplay is solid, the graphics are refreshed and brilliant as always, and I can easily say that this is the most humorous game in the series. You will not be disappointed.

My copy came in the mail today, so i've been playing it for quite a while. Definitely a fun addition to the series. The space combat is only a meh, but the moon exploration, weapon customization, hoverboots, and the time puzzles make this ratchet game one of my faves so far.2009-10-30 05:44:00

Did anybody get the Discovery Package? I'm wondering how to access the Insomniac Moon (I've downloaded the voucher and installed it). Or is the Insomniac Moon the museum planet on the top left of the map? I've gone to the museum but didn't look around too much (I guess I should have before asking!). If they are the same place, then why would it give me a trophy called "Insomniac" just for visiting the museum? That would mean that only the people who have the Discovery Package could get the platinum trophy. Does anyone know what I'm talking about????2009-10-30 16:59:00

Everyone else collects everything beats some super boss and then gets to go to the insomniac moon and get their trophy.

I only ever played the first 'Ratchet And Clank'way back when in 2002 or so, and loved it.

The sequels didn't look as good as the first so i kinda stayed away from the series.
But this new game looks pretty good, i've seen some trailers and gamely footage and it reminded me as to why i loved the first one so much.

I downloaded the demo last night, but have yet to play it. As soon as i get home im gonna boot it up!

Yep! Here's the list of different pre-order packages - which I pulled from here (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/09/its-official-ratchet-clank-future-a-crack-in-time-available-in-the-us-on-october-27/). The nice thing is that you don't miss out if you didn't pre-order because everything is unlockable.

?Discovery Package? ? Explore the Insomniac Moon with a special level that resembles the layout of Insomniac Games? studio offices. A fan favorite, the Moon is filled with content that didn?t quite make the final game, sort of like deleted scenes on DVDs. You can earn this unlockable on your own, but Insomniac certainly won?t make it easy for ya!

?Power Package? ? Up your arsenal with an exclusive weapon skin for one of Ratchet?s weapons along with extra hit points and Ratchet?s brand new Cryo Mine Glove.

?Bolt Package? ? Bolster your bolt count with 5,000 free bolts care of Ratchet?s most bolt-centric power-ups, the Bolt Magnetizer and Box Basher.

?Space Package? ? Drift off into space with an exclusive hot rod skin for Ratchet?s ship, the Aphelion, along with 5,000 free bolts and an exclusive Ratchet & Clank PlayStation Home Avatar skin

If you didn't pick up Ratchet & Clank's latest adventure yet, you're in luck. Amazon.com is selling the game for an already-discounted rate of $49.99. But, with coupon code ratchet3, you'll be able to get an additional $5 off. With free shipping and no sales tax in most states, you'll be able to pick up A Crack in Time for $44.99 -- 25% off the current retail price. For such a new game, this is a really sweet deal.

This game's actually really difficult xD

It seems like it's more about dodging the attacks other than holding one button down and spamming the fire button!

I'm only on the normal difficulty and i've had a few struggly moments, usually i barely struggle at all until late challenge mode

Looking forward to challenge mode on the hard difficulty, and that "super hard" boss too

To answer the question posed earlier, yes, the Clank sections become quite evil, even sinister. As if they want to defeat you, to crush any hope of victory.

But yeah, they're still pretty freakin' hard.

Clank puzzles start to become very evil, after having played 4 planets.
And some of the shooting sections are really hard.

The Spiral of Death is my favourite weapon if thats what you're on about. The big blue razer thing.
I don't want to say too much about it incase it spoils it for someone, i usually hate it when people tell me what the weapons are xD
That's why i hate Insomniac for putting the new RYNO and Rift Inducer in a video without warning

I was a bit disappointed when i got a skill point for completing the final clank challenge too, the last one really wasn't that hard. I'm expecting challenge mode to have much harder versions of the puzzles like they normally do!

My favourite weapons Mr. Zurkon! There's nothing better than a robot helping you out! It took me a while to figure out how he worked, but then I learned he had HP, and once he was shot enough he would die, then you would respawn him, but you could only respawn him a couple times before your out.

I lol'd the first time I saw the armor dealer. I was like; hey what's this? It looks like a weapon shop. The when I got closer I was like o_0

I'm going to be honest, here - I didn't like the RYNO 5. It just spews bullets everywhere - there's no lock-on or anything. And, individually speaking, the bullets aren't that powerful. You have to get close to an enemy to do any real damage.

At least that's how it is in Challenge Mode when I first got it.

Yea, the best part about it is how it looks and sounds IMO 1812 overture FTW. Its a good weapon, but you have to be very close to do any real damage. also, when it fires, it always seems to force me to strafe.2009-11-10 05:57:00

I didn't like it because of the damage i just found it really funny because of how over the top it is

It's still a really overpowered weapon though, i can mow down arena matches with no effort and things like hydra tanks and the war grok don't even get chance to attack anymore!

I wish it'd level up faster though so i could throw it to the back of the pile and focus on something else a bit more, i tend to stop using my fully upgraded weapons so i can focus on leveling up the more obscure ones

I've almost beaten it, I'm at the last boss fight against Nefarious right now.
The has been awesome so far and I'll look forward to finish it and then collect all the Zoni and stuff and then start challenge mode

At one part it took me almost 15 minutes to figure out where I should go, until I understood that I have to go talk to Lawrence for him to open the door.

For me the Clank challenges were very easy, or not easy but I found the solutions almost right away, I never used any of the hints. I guess I'm a genious

I wonder what that epic ending is, as I'm now at the last boss fight and doesn't seem any more epic than the rest of the games, I guess I'll have to play and see.

I actually have the collectors edition so basically I could unlock the insomniac museum whenever I want but I won't, just because that feels like cheating. I actually bought the collectors edition just for that awesome box

If I remember correctly, wasn't there an Omega RYNO in the past R&C games? Ooh, I remember one being the Omega Rynocerator. That was Up Your Arsenal, right?

Personally, I'm not that satisfied with the RYNO in A Crack in Time. The ammo doesn't last for more than 30 seconds (and that's fully loaded to 1500 rounds), and there aren't enough rockets being fired compared to how fast your ammo goes down, plus they're not homing rockets. But I only have level 1 at the moment, so maybe I'm judging too early. There's also the possibility of an Omega RYNO V as well.

About the Insomniac Museum... I think I may rememeber something like that from the past games, that is if I'm not confusing it with the Hall of Knowledge from Tools of Destruction. How do you get to these museums?

I'm actually glad that Insomniac left out multiplayer for the newer games, it didn't work so well before. But at least they tried it, and it's a path that every game developer should at least attempt to take.

The story was great, very epic. But it's sort of an end to the series of events in the last few games. I hope this isn't the last R&C game, it's highly unlikely. Heck, I didn't even realize Ratchet and Clank Future was a trilogy before I read about it!

As for the weapons, there's a pretty good selection, and the new constructo mods are a nice mechanic. I think the number of available weapons is just right, kind of like an average for the R&C games.

On V6 upto 2500 ammo
v9 3000 ammo

If i remember right in 2 & 3 the insomniac museum was unlocked by visiting a certain spot on one of the planets in the middle of the night.

Best discovery ever!

If you replay the clock levels you can get some ultra hard time puzzles.

I'm playing the first one now and it's insane, it was hard enough to find the solution but now i run out of time 1 second before reaching the door!
These are awesome though, the harder these things are the more fun they are.

Yes, the extra puzzles are awesome, and also required for some 100% work 2009-11-12 21:39:00

Best discovery ever!

If you replay the clock levels you can get some ultra hard time puzzles.

I'm on it now xD

I have a solution but i'm not sure it's the right one, i'd need like an extra 5 seconds but i have nowhere to squeeze it from.

Oh yes. Figuring it out is the simple part figuring out how to shave off enough seconds to finish it is the hard part.

I've just tried a seemingly better solution but it turned out to only give me an extra second or two - this one makes it a bit easier to try out some new stuff towards the end

I'll get there eventually!

(Insomniac need to release dlc with more of these )

try having red jump to where the platforms are going to appear as blue runs to the switch, have blue leave a switch as soon as anyones cleared a last platform and everyone leave a switch as soon as a recording is past a door. Get yellow to kill the turret and hit the back door lock and green should arrive at the final door lock just as blue opens it leaving about 7 seconds to leg it to the bolt.

Aw wow i want a ratchet costume!

Maybe that's a hint that the sequel involves ratchet being sent back in time with the great clock
Bit of a bad time to be sent back to really... we don't even have laser guns yet!

The clock, much like time itself, is a gift, and not to be tempered with.

No time traveling. It's bad, mmkay?

Unless the plot requires it, it's ok then.

Eh, I wouldn't risk more than six minutes.

I've got a pretty good tip- Leveling up seems REALLY fast during that battle in Gimlick Valley.

In about 30 minutes i've managed to get my first 6 VX weapons, and leveled all of them to at least level 5.
Some of the level 5's were level 1 before i started this and the VXs were level 6

I've also managed to collect over 1 million bolts really quickly too. I brought the omega ryno and 10 minutes later it's VX already and i have 500k again

This is on challenge mode, i'm just replaying the first bit of the battle before the 2nd bridge.

I got this yesterday, and I'm a little disappointed. The graphics seem sketchy, much less polished than TOD...almost last generation. The gameplay seems to have been dumbed down from previous installments, with too-easy skill points and gold bolts that are "hidden" right under your nose. I've heard that the game is only half the length of TOD as well. I wonder if Insomniac are getting bored of their own franchise, and only continuing to produce R&C games because of contractual obligations.

In retrospect, perhaps I should have bought COD: Modern Warfare 2 instead.

I was thinking that too. They could release a big pack of time puzzles (all in Clank's subconsciousness) with different difficulties (Medium, Hard, Very Hard, Impossible), and have some which require about 10 Clanks. It feels like they've only just skimmed the surface of what can be done with the few puzzles in the game.

I would buy it.

I think you're only focusing on small parts of the game.

SOME skill points are easy, SOME gold bolts are in obvious places etc.
How about the awesome weapons and puzzles, the difficulty has been increased a lot, and i personally think the new graphics are awesome

I'd just hate to see someone pass this game off as a disappointment without giving it much of a chance

Jeez, I was already having doubts about this game being a rush-job, but now R&C: A Crack In Time is totally dead to me! I had just beaten the two Helitanks at Krell Canyon, when the game froze, auto-reset my console and corrupted my save file. That's two days worth of progress down the crapper! I did a search, and it seems like this freezing/corrupting is a common bug in the game. In fact, people are saying the game has save-wrecking bugs all over the place. I think it's time to take this beta version botch-job back to the shop and swop it for a game that actually works.2009-11-16 11:09:00

I had some problems with the "my blaster runs really, really hot" trophy, but then I tried the game with my brother. It's much easier because you can save the other one and won't lose a life unless you fail to save the other one.
The scores are counted together at the end so it's very easy to get 10000 points, I think we got it at the seventh wawe or so.

Unlucky i guess :/

As a useless defence i wouldn't say the save bugs were as common as you make out but i can understand why you'd be annoyed

Just started playing this game a few days ago. I'm around 11 or 12 hours into it now and I have to say, it's awesome! I can definitely see myself playing through it several times

A few of the Mr. Zurkon quotes that I've heard:

"Yoo hoo, Mr. Zurkon is looking to kill you."
"Mr. Zurkon doesn't have all day."
"Mr. Zurkon is getting bored."
"Are you ready to die? Because Mr. Zurkon is ready to kill."
"You dare to hurt measly furball?"
"You are the disease and Mr. Zurkon is the cure"
"Mr. Zurkon does NOT come in peace!"
"Killing stuff is so much fun, do-da do-da! Zurkon kills stuff all day long, all the do-da-day!"
