Clockworx (Survival Challenge)

Bounce around inside this giant clock to get the highest score possible. Just make sure you mind the gaps... How long can you survive??

This is my fourth survival challenge. Think Meerkat Bounce, but inside a circle, which is spinning, and you'll get the idea. There are 24 platforms around the outer edge which will bounce you into the air, and for every bounce you get 10 points. Chain bounces together quickly to get a multiplier.

Four of the platforms, however, are on fire, so you'll want to avoid those if possible, even though they will make you jump higher.

But the real danger comes whenever you hear the clock chime. It happens randomly, and although you'll get an extra 50 points, whichever platform is at the top at the time of the chime will dissapear. Fall through the gap and you'll die.

The longer you survive, the faster it spins, so after about a minute things get pretty difficult as more and more gaps appear which you'll have to time your jump over. Once half of the platforms are gone you'll need a lot of skill to stay alive.

If you're on your own, a score of 1000 is awesome. But as long as there's no lag its a lot of fun with other players, and its a completely different challenge because if you time your bounces you can get over 1000 points even before the platforms start dissapearing, so its less about surviving and more about increasing your multiplier.

Hope you enoy it!

Oooh, that was fun. Just played it ... about twenty times. : D

Really enjoyed it; the style is consistent (well, it's only a survivial challenge so that's easy). The materials fit well together, but I have to admit I'm not a fan of the orange stone, though I suppose that fits best to the rest of the materials. So, it looks brilliant overall in my opinion.
But it also plays very well. As I said I played roughly 20 times and had only one freak accident where I got stuck between two bouncing platforms and seconds later squashed to death. The mechanisms run very smooth aside from occasional platform that refuses to bounce you upon landing, but that's okay.

Seeing that I played it so often you must have done something right. Especially considering that I rarely play survival challenges more than once. This one is good though; it only takes a second to start and it's just fun to get bounced around the clock.

Well done and congratulations to having made the first survival challenges that made it on my hearted list.

Could you give me some feedback on my level "A Journey", please?

It seems really cool gameplaywise, and it also looks very good.
I'm not a fan of survival challenges, but I will try this on.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've got stuck between some platforms a couple of times, not sure why it happens but I don't think there's anyhting I can do to fix it. Might be because there's gaps between them, but they have to be there because they're all at angles to each other, and if two were to bounce side by side they would collide and probably break. Fortunately it only happens rarely.

And platforms refusing to bounce you is probably due to the proximity switches. Seems to happen if you land inbetween two of them, just outside the radius. Again, there's not much I could do to fix it, because if I made the radius bigger they wouldn't work if you land in the middle. Luckily though I've never died as a result of not bouncing, as it only seems to happen at the start when it spins slowly.

Anyway, i'm glad you liked it! I've posted some feedback on your level.

This is easily one of the best community survival challenges out there so far, and I enjoy it more than a lot of the Media Molecule ones. The presentation is top notch (where did you get the font?), and the orange/brown/white color scheme is consistent and looks great. Players are able to jump right into the action or check the scores or rules, which is a great and simple way of doing it. The cogs, sound, music, and even name all come together to a solidly-themed challenge.

The actual level was done just as well. There were no glitches or bugs in it to speak of, and the background looked great but not distracting. There was one point where I was stuck in between two platforms and had to pop myself to get out, but it only happened once in the 20 or 30 times I played this. This level is seriously addicting, and you can actually work out strategies for getting higher scores, especially with a couple people. The simple logic around the edges looked good and gave the player somewhat of a warning of what was coming if they were watching it closely enough. :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart from me.

I have #12 on the Two Player scoreboard, and I'm working on a spot on the One Player board.

For F4F, I'm going to bring back my LittleBigMemory thread, because I should be releasing some major updates for it in the near future: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=13198

Pros:
- HIGH replayability (I tried it at least 5 times)
- Gorgeous design
- Great "How to Play" idea with different camera angles
- Great idea to be able to look at the high scores
- The sounds are perfect - I felt like I was in a clock
- Everything worked perfectly
- I liked that you kept the switch triggers visible
- The back ground gears are a nice touch
- I didn't realize you could put a motor bolt on top of a motor bolt!

Cons:
- There are none!

Nicely Done!!!!

F4F - If you have the time, give my "Real Myst: Channelwood Age" level a try - thanks!

Really good stuff, man. I don't have any complaints, and everyone else has covered all the feedback stuff (there's not much to it ). You got a heart from me.

I have to ask though... did you use a glitched layer for the clock hands? I was never around for the checkpoint/golf ball thickness stuff, so I was shocked to see two thin layers overlapping one another.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the great feedback! It really means a lot. I'll return the favour when I have some time.

I have to ask though... did you use a glitched layer for the clock hands? I was never around for the checkpoint/golf ball thickness stuff, so I was shocked to see two thin layers overlapping one another.

Yeah, I used the thick/thin glitch. I always avoid using glitches, but really for clock hands there was no other way to it without it looking weird, and I probably wouldn't have been able to fit the background cogs in. I didn't actually have any thick/thin stuff, but a friend of mine (gm9218) had some saved, so I sent him the second hand and he converted it for me.

I tried breaking the level but respawing just gassed me to death. Restarting is easy. Just drop down and start. No obligatory speech-bubbles or a long time to wait only to die in one second. Getting those things right can really elevate a simple level.

Heh, at first I didn't have the gas, but as soon as I published it gm9218 told me he had mangaed to cheat my jumping back up. Luckily I fixed it before anyone managed to exploit it.

And making survival challenges quick and easy to get started has always been one fo the most important things to me. Unlike normal levels, survival challenges are designed to be replayed lots of times, so if it takes too long to get started nobody would bother.

The presentation is top notch (where did you get the font?), and the orange/brown/white color scheme is consistent and looks great.

Can't remember who the creator was (maybe I should check and credit him in the description), but if you do a search for 'fon't I think its the first level that comes up. There's some great fonts in there.

Pros:
- Great idea to be able to look at the high scores

Thanks, although like with everything else I seem to be talking about in this post, it wasn't really my own idea. Showing the high scores seems to be the latest craze in bombs survival levels and stuff (usually with a "top 5 players get a heart" comment), but it is a great idea. It gives players a reason to want to get a good score so that other people can see their name when they start the level.

Is it "above board" to simply gush without giving you any useful feedback? If so, count this as my official "gush".

This level holds up to any meter-stick it's put up to. It's simple and genius. I'm going to put up the same mental filter I do when I run into a celebrity whose created something I appreciate in real life, but know that just the same, I have a million pointless things I *want* to say about how truly awesome your work is but won't, because it simply doesn't need saying, and I don't want to be "that guy".

My only disappointment was that there was no sticker reward for doing well in this level like in some other survival challenges, so that people could create sticker switches to reward people for simply putting their time into this, and encourage them with incentive to go and play it.

Very fun.

I'm at 1,200 right now and #16. I can definitely get at least 1,400 as I just barely missed continuing at my 1,200 run and it wasn't even too hard at that point.

Tip: Hit a ton of boards in the beginning. Bounce of the sides, roof, and everything going at an angle and just be hitting them all really fast like your a pinball. I was at 700 before even 3 or 4 blocks were gone.

Edit: I just went insane and got first place. 2,251. I was flying off the walls on accident after reaching like 1300 and was just trying to regain balance to be jumping straight up again but as I was attempting to while flying off the walls I was shooting up in score. By the time I was back to normal I was at 1,800 and just kept on going till I died at 2,251.

Yeah for me!

This was a really, really, nice looking survival challenge. I absolutely loved the design of your clock. The actual challenge was fun as well (although I wasn't very good). I don't really have any complaints. For a survival level, I think it's pretty great! I'd love to see an entire level with this theme!2009-08-30 14:44:00

You know, I am not a fan of survival challenges. I mean sure I'll play it, but I've never hearted one them. This was me before I played your level, and you my friend, are the exception. This is the first survival challenge that I've ever hearted. This level is excellent to say the least.
I was very impressed by the visuals! Usually people make survival challenges and decorate the levels as an afterthought. But your level had a character on its own. Visually, I really liked the intro section and all the action going in the background. Specially those gears that wobbled back and forth very "clock-like" lol. The gameplay was excellent with no bugs. It was pretty fun and yet challenging. I actually played it like 6 times in a row. Pretty addicting. Looking forward to see more from you. Keep it up!

I loved this level! I played it about 50 times in a row and still managed to achieve just the score of about 700.

Let's start with the visuals:
Ok, the visuals were out of this world! Well, the survival area wasn't that special but the backround was awesome! I actually felt like I was inside a clocktower.
9/10

Gameplay:
You kept the gameplay simple... and simple is awesomeness.
Plus the idea was very original!
10/10

Mechanics:
HOW DID YOU DO 'EM? Did you sell your soul to the devil to make the mechanics or what?!
10/10

Sound:
Pretty good. Liked the music choice.
8/10

This was a very fun level! The visuals were nice and I'd love to see more with it! The idea of the challenge when I read the rules seemed okay... But the I fell into the wheel and the platforms bounced....and WOW that was FUN! pretty tough too. The simple idea worked really really well. When I added friends into the mix it was quite hectic! All in all the details were nice like the gears and the pendulums in the background. I really liked the level and would love to see more!

This is an excellent survival challenge level, it really has all the qualities of a perfect challenge level. It is easy to understand the concept, easy to start the level, easy to begin, hard to progress with enough skill and random chance to reward those who play the level enough to learn the nuances.

It is a great variation of the meerkat bounce and bouncing castle concepts and is beautifully created and displayed. The gear/clock theme is very well done and I sat and watched the internal gears operating for a few lives as they are very well done. The visuals on this level are top-notch and set the scene of the level very well.

I love the attention to detail and the time you've put into the ring and clock elements.

Fire is a good choice in the clock ring as it isn?t instantly fatal and the dropping platforms is a great twist. I played this for quite some time though I didn?t get above 700 or 800 points. There is definite strategies that work which is good that it isn?t completely chance driven yet there is enough randomness to the hitting the proximity switches and the amount of rebound that I didn?t get bored of the action.

Congratulations on the success of your level, it was doing quite well on the Cool Levels page and this level really deserves it. Easy to play, a smooth ramp in difficulty and quick enough to play over and over without much dead time. Good work.

Wow, this level is AMAZING!!

All I can say is that I wish I'd made it, this is absolutely the kind of level I wish I had in my collection of published levels - addictive and original!

Perfect use of the clockwork theme, including the ticking and chiming sounds, which I've been trying to work into my own Jumping Castle level, but with nowhere near the success that you've achieved here!

The actual mechanics of the level are ingenious - they make perfect use of the game's physics, so that playing this level is an absolute joy, and replaying is a necessity!

Sorry I can't help gushing about this level, but it's now very close to my heart, as it reminds me of what I've tried to do as a creator the whole time I've had this game - make levels that are just FUN, but with a unique and original touch. With this level you completely succeeded!

Please do have a look at my Jumping Castle level if you have a chance, I'd love to know what you think of my twist on the bouncing mechanic, especially since you've completely mastered it here!

I think I made a lot of people angry, playing this level over and over and over again, while all the people on my friends list got pop up after pop up reiterating my horrible scores xD

Yeh, I tried really hard to get a high score but couldn't. After a while I gave up

But incredible mini-game. It's lots of fun and really well put together. Not much else to say - all round perfect mini-game, 5 stars and a well deserved heart.

I always feel slightly stupid for posting something on a level thread that has been said before; I always feel the need to say something new or different to keep my posts from simply being reiterations of things already said. Having said that, I can think of nothing to say about this level that has not been said already.

This really is one of the best survival challenges I have every played. It is cohesively designed, fun to play, looks fantastic and plays amazingly well. I played this level with three other people and what a blast! I highly recommend that everyone here give this level a go with at least one other player; you would be surprised how much this changes the experience.

What a fantastic job you have done. If you level does not get spotlighted I will be thoroughly upset! Do you hear me Morgana? Thoroughly upset!

I normally never post a comment that has an actual star rating, but in this case I must make an exception. :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart!

Really really great stuff. I have not been this enthusiastic about a level before.

As far as the F4F thing goes I would love it if you gave my level, "The Adventures of the Prince: Chapter 1 The Attack" a shot. The link to my level thread can by clicking on my signature.

Thanks for creating such a wonderful level!

Awesome design, wonderful concept, great challenge, and totally addicting gameplay.

Only had two issues with this level:

1. I didn't do as well as I had hoped.

2, I neglected to post on your thread till now since I have been playing it off and on for several days!!! Been so busy on my own projects I haven't posted till now!

Loved the working clock concept as well as the gameplay. Incredible design work that had me staring at how amazing it looked which led me to my short lived. 0 scored 1st play. Superb! What more could you ask for and all from a radioactive glowing fish!

:star::star::star::star::star: and a heart!

No need for F4F as from the looks of this thread you would be at it for weeks! ...though if you have a chance, you might have fun playing my level Space Escape if you haven't already.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I've removed F4F for now, I never expected I'd get this much response, but I will leave feedback for everyone who's asked. I have not forgotten!

Amazing! How did you do it?

Well, now that you ask....

First thing I did was make a bouncing platform. It's a block of wood on a stiuff flipper motion piston attached to some dissolve. One shot proximity switch bounces it and emits a bubble when you land on it.

Then I made a circle, witha sprung bolt attaching it to some dakr matter in the middle. I copied the platform, put it into position and glued the dissolve onto the circle behind it. Then I rotated the sprung bolt by 15 degrees. Copied another platform and stuck it on. Did it 22 more times, removed the sprung bolt and replaced it with a motor bolt.

Then I basically just messed about for a bit, adding magnetic keys and creature brains and pistons. It's quite simple how it works (all the logic used is visible at the sides). Then it was just a case of decorating it too look like a clock.

Took me 3 days to make it.

Please do have a look at my Jumping Castle level if you have a chance, I'd love to know what you think of my twist on the bouncing mechanic, especially since you've completely mastered it here!

I played Jumping Castle a few days before making this. I thought it was very good (I'll leave some feedback on your thread), and is actually what got me starting messing around with a bouncing platform idea. So thanks for inspiring me.
