Making your level popular

Archive: 9 posts

Hi all,

I've recently finished my little big planet level which I've put a lot of time and effort in it.
But i'm saddened to see it barely made it to page 11, while some levels (no offence) which are ... less developed make it to page1.

I'm looking for a way to let people play my level, because right now the only way they'll play it is if i'm lucky through Quick Join.

Any hints or tips to prevent your level to go down to the LBP abyss?

Publish it on a busy day (weekend) and then keep republishing it as many times as you can. To republish you have to make one change in the level (move dark matter, adjust a corner) and then publish and overwrite the one one the community. Hope this helps.2009-08-27 11:08:00

What many people do is exactly what Jedi_1993 said. They will change a minor detail in their level that doesn't affect anything and then republish it so it will bring it back to the top of the Cool Pages. Eventually, it will get enough plays and traffic that it will stay on the upper Cool Pages. This all has to be done within the first 7 days of publishing.2009-08-27 11:57:00

Publishing during busy times isn't really a good idea. Yes there are a lot of people playing, but there are also a lot of people publishing at the same time. There are a lot of kids playing who will hate your levels if they aren't stupendously easy, there are a lot of people who may wish to spam you with 1 star ratings (because they have just published their ZOMG 500 prizes Bomb Drop in 3D!!11!! level and view you as competition).

Also, assuming the weekend is the busiest time, and you are aiming for cool pages, you are likely to get stuck on cool pages towards the end of your week. If you initially publish at the weekend, your primetime, stuck on cool pages will be midweek, when less people are playing.

Basically publish during non-peak times, Tuesday / Wednesday, get friends playing and showcase threads on sites like this ASAP, to get decent feedback and objective ratings, and have your level fortified by that launch. Then start republishing if you decide to go down that route *sigh* and get it stuck on cool pages for the busy times at the weekend.

Also, spend ages making your badge look really cool and upload some nice screenies. I only really play community levels if they have nice screenies. 2009-08-27 12:07:00

First impressions are really important, so like Kiminski said, make a quality badge, and post some screens to give an idea of what to expect. Also, a good description of the level is a must for me. This is just my opinion, but a level that has a good badge and a couple of good screens but little or no description tends to get skipped by me if I'm in a rush.2009-08-27 12:28:00

put a thread in level showcase

Funny you should mention that, because I have but unfortunately no one bothered looking =(
I even uploaded screenshots to make it more appealing but no one replied.
I don't dare bumping myself because that would look bad.

Here's the thread if you want to take a look:

And thanks to everyone else for the good advice, i'll make sure to make good use of it.

The best way to make the level showcase work for you (especially if you're not as known an author):

a. Make sure your level uses F4F (which you did)

b. Then, start giving feedback on or creator's levels and ask that they give you feedback on yours. This will generate good honest and well-thought-out plays and hearts for your levels.

"b" is the part where a lot of people go wrong... if you just drop your level on the showcase, and no one knows who you are, you're going to get very few entries in your thread. Not only that, but when you get the feedback it may not be from a good experienced creator.

I personally (as many other creators) always leave a few F4F threads out there even though I don't TECHNICALLY need anymore feedback on my level threads. I do this so that unknown authors can look at my thread and request I give them feedback on theirs.
