I LOVE the Silent Hill universe. I admit I never played Silent Hill 4: The Room. By that point it was beginning to become a bit old, the same controls and essentially the same game. I loved the idea of bringing the horror into your own house, that's a stroke of brilliance, but the game didn't seem to hold enough to compel me to buy. but I think the upcoming Wii Silent Hill looks absolutely amazing, and is exactly what the franchise needs in terms of change.

It appears, based on the videos and information I've seen, that you can't kill the creatures in the new Silent Hill. Maybe you get weapons later, but honestly, I hope you don't - if you have to go the entire game without any weapons, trying to get around the creatures, running from them - that will, for me, be the ULTIMATE survival horror game. Plus it looks to have some really, really cool adventure and puzzle elements, it looks to make great use of the motion control and overall user interface.

Okay, so Silent Hill games past. The first game floored me. I had dreams and nightmares for weeks. It literally HAUNTED ME. I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. The second game came out and presented something I never thought I'd see in a videogame: Psychosexual metaphor. Silent Hill 2 presented the monsters as personal demons, the hell you traverse as your own personal hell. The new Silent Hill looks to do something similar, with the psychologist frame story.

I really appplaud Silent Hill for doing something different, something unique, and something really - REALLY - GENUINELY - NIGHTMARE-INDUCINGLY - frightening. Scarier experiences than any movie, book, or game I have ever been through, bar none.

Yeah. I must admit that it would be nice to have some "low-tech" weapons in the new silent hill Like a plank, pipe or axe. But not guns. Guns are dumb. BTW I'm getting it on Wii so beating the crap out of some monster with a plank coulb be really awesome

The best SH game I've played is propaly SH 2. It was (like you said) more psychological. And it had a beautiful story. Not like the other ones that have this cult thingy (I like the cult storyline as well)
And I just bought SH 2 for ps2 It has a little making of DVD as well

Even if you haven't played any of SH games, feel free to ask questions and I'll feel happy to answer

1. Silent Hill

2. Silent Hill again. The first really stands out, despite its technological limitation, the team managed to convey atmosphere that few games can rival. It's the only game I've been scared to turn on, and too immersed to turn off, despite the sheer terror.

3. SH: Homecoming. Haven't played it yet, but everything I've seen and read of it points to the series taking a new direction that I don't feel is in the spirit of SH.

4. James Sunderland. Inherently flawed, and a brilliant example of the 'unreliable narrator.'

5. Henry Townshend. About as much depth and dimension as your average Steven Seagal character.

6. Valtiel. One of only a few monsters that you never directly encounter. Really creepy and ominous.

7. Pyramid Head. Sellout!

8. Tied between: (A) When Lisa realizes that she's a monster herself. (B) The smoke and mirror room in the hospital in SH3.

9. Letter ? From the Lost Days (SH3)

10. The lightsaber from SH3!

Even if you haven't played any of SH games, feel free to ask questions and I'll feel happy to answer

1. Silent Hill

2. Silent Hill 2 'cos it combined horror and a love story to make a wonderful game. Also it had a great atmosphere.

3. Homecoming. Never played it but just the thing that they sort of ruined Pyramid Head's reputation. As SH players know, PH was sort of James's personal demon and punisher. (of course he got the idea for it from the painting in the historical society but still...)

4. James Sunderland. First of all, he had an interesting story and second, the tradegy that he had experienced, made me feel sorry for him And that's pretty rare for a vg-character

5. Alex Shepherd. I just hated that idiot. He wasn't interesting character at all! Of course, I haven't played The Room so I don't know what Henry was like.

6. Valtiel or Pyramid Head. Can't decide which one is better.

7. Those friggin' gorilla type of monsters from SH 1. Ya' know, those who knock you over and you'll just have to wait 'till it let's you go. Those were just annoying!

8. Silent Hill 2 prison:
- The ladies toilet when you knock the door and leave, you'll hear the scream
- The "invisible prisoner"
- The cell that locked you in for a while (I started to panic for a while)
Silent Hill 2 Hotel
- All the voices in the corridors
Silent Hill 1 hospital
- Breaking bottle in the room

9. Promise, Theme of Laura, Room of Angel, One more soul to the call, Hometown

10. Hammer!

Darn!
I forgot the favourite puzzle/riddle thing Well...

11. Favourite Puzzle/riddle? Why?

"Dead Men" from Silent Hill 2. I just loved the sickness of this riddle. Plus it was a nice little brain-teaser

This is another series that i wish i'd of played when i was a kid (in addition to mgs)

I haven't played any of them but i did watch my friend play through SH1 while hiding behind a pillow, but i can't remember much of it

Oh and i've seen the movie 100 times which i think is brilliant, despite what other people tell me!

Even though i don't understand it i love the story and the atmosphere, and that thing where the roads leading out of SH all disappear and are replaced by a huge abyss has always freaked me out
I know there's a lot of symbolism in there too which i'm really interested by

Hopefully some day i'll be able to play through the first few games, i want to at least play SH1 and 2.

I think I have Silent Hill 2-4 on PS2. A collectors edition which had all those games bundled in one box came out and I bought that. I haven't had a chance to play it though.

I thought I bought SH1 for the PSX second hand, but when I finally loaded it up it seems some idiot had put a demo disc in the official box, probably to get a decent trade in price for what was essentially a worthless disc, while still keeping the original game. I was very annoyed at this, but there was not much I could do about it.

On a slightly different note, it seems a shame that Fatal Frame on the Wii will never get an official translation into English. Nintendo of America/Europe says that the game goes against the spirit of what the Wii is on about, despite it being an incredibly sucessful game in Japan and the English speaking fans begging and petitioning for it to be released.

I hope that Nintendo don't have the rights to SH on the Wii and shut that one done as well. For Fatal Frame /Project Zero there is not much that can be done. Although Tecmo did create the Japanese game, it is Nintendo that has the publishing rights to it, and so it's entirely out of their hands.

Is that true?? Oh, man, that sucks!! If the past is any indication, SOMEONE may step forward to publish this game.

I wouldn't worry about Silent Hill on the Wii being shut down. It'll come out, it's a successful series out here and a fairly high profile game that's been given a lot of very positive buzz. Plus Nintendo is happy to get those handful of games to keep their core base happy.

EDIT: Realized I had quoted completely the wrong part of Elbee's post!

The same arguments were said for Fatal Frame Wii. Although I doubt Fatal Frame / Project Zero has sold as many units as Silent Hill, it's still been sucessful enough for the series to be published in multiple formats, with all but the latest sequel released in English.

Although the "core gamer" demographic is clamoring more and more for "hardcore" games, ones which are not just family friendly mini games of medicore quality, and despite Fatal Frame Wii in Japan being hugely sucessful, Nintendo US has stood it's ground and refused to translate or publish this game in English.

A game like Madworld, which goes against the family friendly image that Nintendo US is trying to portray, was released by a third party and so Nintendo could not stop it. Despite that it's still sold pretty poorly compared to the top games sold on the Wii. If the Wii user base really was clamouring for such a game, then something like that should have sold better, just from an economic point of view.

Still though, I don't know who has the publishing rights to Silent Hill Wii. Given the fact that the English speaking gaming press is giving this a whole lot more attention than Fatal Frame Wii ever got, it's a fair bet to say it will be released by somebody or else they would not be getting as much press.

Maybe, just maybe, Silent Hill Wii will do well, and then Nintendo might see the light and translate Fatal Frame. That's a very big maybe though.

I'm just gonna pop in here...

So, I've never played a Silent Hill game, but they've interested me for a while. Up until recently, I've never been much into the horror scene, as it were, but something changed for me recently, Iunno what, that's made me suddenly want to get into all this stuff. The main problem I've faced is the fact that I won't be 17 until next month, so obviously I can't just go buy one of the games if I wanted to... Plus, I don't really know much about these games, just that there's some monsters and some kind of alternate dimension that you sometimes go to... Anyone care to enlighten me?

NO! Better you not know a THING going in! Just that you're in for some serious scares.

I hate to break some bad news to you, but you MIGHT have missed out on a big part of the experience of Silent Hill 1 because the graphics are so dated now. Still play it by all means - there's really nothing else out there quite like it. My memories of playing that game the first time through are crystal clear: horror, fear, anxiety, nightmares. I had a hard time sleeping. But I was stunned, amazed, astonished at the effect the game had on me. It kept me up at night in the BEST possible way.

Recently I went back and looked at the game again - i couldn't believe it! Where's the game i remember? The graphics look so dated now - I don't remember a game that even HAD videogame graphics, what I remember was real.

So, new technology, the uber-realistic graphics in new games (and fine-tuned controls in many newer third person games) may put a bit of a damper on the experience of that first game. But you shouldn't deny yourself the Silent Hill experience if you're even remotely curious. Take the plunge. Don't wait. Play the first one, and then play the second one. the third one is also worthwhile, but begins to show its age a bit since it still essentially plays identically to the first one.

The fourth and fifth installments I never bothered with. I'm looking forward to the Wii one in a big way.

Go play! Don't spoil it for yourself! Don't even look at pictures! Just take the plunge.

Correct, the first one is on the Playstation one. I wouldn't be too surprised if they brought it to the PSN eventually - although the release of the upcoming remake/sequel on the Wii will probably not persuade Sony to do it anytime soon...

In a worst case scenario, and you can't pull off a good copy on ebay, in used stores, etc... I have been able to succesfully install and run it on a Playstation emulator on the pc (the emulator's called ePSX or PSXe or something like that). You can buy a cheap logitech USB controller that's practically identical to a dual shock, or an even cheaper one without the thumbsticks. I'm not condoning piracy across the board, I'm just saying, torrents can be a great source for old games, the internet is like an archive of game history. If it's out there and you never played it and it's completely unavailable to buy, it's probably available online if you look in the right places.

Although the problem with it is that modern computers are much more powerful than an old Playstation, and the "cleaned up" graphics can REALLY make it look "simple". And the dirty, grungy, low res, twitching textures of the Playstaiton One actually really serve the atmosphere of Silent Hill.

I downloaded it on an emulator and it worked fine. I couldn't find any legitimate copy of it so what was I supposed to do?

Got through SH2, very impressive and definitely wasn't like anything I'd ever played before. Tried playing through 3, was really enjoying all the improvements graphics and controls wise but the game kept crashing on me and I just gave up towards the end. Best bit was that room you walk into with the mirror, and the whole room becomes the inside of a rotting stomach, then your reflection begins to degrade

I don't think I'll ever play SH1 even though I've heard great things about it, sometimes games don't age too well, and its painful to revert back to the old graphics... even though I could play a game like Mario 64 anytime.

One thing I hate about the SH games is the character design. Man I just really don't give a flying burrito about the characters. I know there flawed, and thats intentional, but they're just so incredibly incompetent and hardly react realistically to all the crap thats happening to them. None of the characters are interesting or likeable, besides maybe Pyramid Head. He is the only character I could relate to

I was looking forward to SH5 on PS3, but then found out it was a load of poop. I really thought they had so much potential to nail that time.

I'm not expecting much from the Wii game, even though it looks like they're going a step further. I'll see once a reviews out

An unconventional psychological game that, for me, beats Silent Hill hands down is Killer7 for gamecube. Probably one of my favourite games now that I think about it, and Sude51 was partly responsible for that Fatal Frame wii game, if I remember correctly.

1.First Silent Hill game you played?

2. Favourite Silent Hill game? Why?
Silent Hill, for it's the only one I've played.
3. Least favourite SH game? Why?
It would have to be Silent Hill, because it's the only one I've played.
4. Favourite character? Why?
Cybell. She just gives you a gun, reads your mind, then tells you not to shoot her.
5. Least favourite character? Why?
Harry. He's so stupid.
6. Favourite monster? Why?
Little babies with knives. They're the easiest to kill, at least.
7. Least favourite monster? Why?
Those flying things. They're everywhere and hard to kill without the pistol.
8. Creepiest moment(s)?
I don't know, seeing those little black shadow things in the library, because I have no clue what they do.
9. Best song (soundtrack)?
The song at the beginning.
10. Favourite weapon?
THE CROWBAR!!!!

So I just bought the first Silent Hill game, and at first I thought that it wasn't that scary. The babies at the beginning didn't scare me, the monsters around SH didn't scare me, but then it got dark.

1.First Silent Hill game you played?

The original

2. Favourite Silent Hill game? Why?

The original, because the whole SH experience felt so fresh back then.

3. Least favourite SH game? Why?

SH4: The Room, because of the limited environments, repetitive backtracking and overuse of creatures that could never be killed. I haven't played Homecoming yet and I'm not even sure I want to. The heart and soul of this franchise seems pretty much dead now from what I've read about it.

4. Favourite character? Why?

Heather/Alessa, because she's cute in human form and pwns all in demon form

5. Least favourite character? Why?

Laura, because she's annoying

6. Favourite monster? Why?

Possessed Cybil, because that fight on the carousel just creeps the bejesus out of me

7. Least favourite monster? Why?

Caliban, because they're a pain in the *** to avoid in tight spaces

8. Creepiest moment(s)?

Possessed Cybil

9. Best song (soundtrack)?

The main piano theme from the original

10. Favourite weapon?

Wooden stick with a nail in it

So, sorry if this is a necro-bump, but I had a question I figured I'd ask here.

So, there's a Silent Hill movie, right? Is that any good? Should I give it a watch or not? Like, how does it stack up to the games in terms of psychological fear and whatnot?

Personally I was PAINFULLY disappointed in the Silent Hill movie. I had high hopes, because Christophe Gans, the director, had done Brotherhood of the Wolf, which was an unbelievably weird, but very original film that didn't quite fit into any genre. I quite liked Brotherhood, and was happy when I heard he was doing the Silent Hill movie.

It's bad. Oh, man. I saw it opening night in a packed house. People went in ready to be scared, and it ended up becoming more of a comedy than anything else. A lot of laughs. Unintentionally funny all over the place.

There are scenes that just feel like they were literally adapted from actual gameplay. "We have to jump over this pit. Here, grab this cable." *swings across the pit*
"here, now you go."

It was just so stupid, and missed nearly every conceivable opportunity to be genuinely scary on a psychological level. There's a scene or two early on that prove to be pretty creepy, like the first run-in with "Collin", which was quite freaky.

But the movie just completely squanders the Silent Hill franchise, turns it into a joke more often than not. I was so disappointed, because a Silent Hill movie has the potential to literally be the scariest movie of all time. Making the movie they did is almost an insult.

That's just me though - if you go in with low expectations, you may find yourself having a really good time. After all, I DID have a number of good laughs, so there is definitely entertainment value there!

^Yeah, it wasn't a good movie, but on the "movie based on a game" scale, it's not too bad.

But hey! You people are saying that Silent Hill 1 is on PS Store? Is this true? And where do you live 'cos in my country there's no sign of it >: (

Oooooh...

I didn't realize that...

I should.... go....

Nah, you're alright.

Funny enough, I just saw a deleted scene from the movie Sicko the other day. In it, Michael Moore tours Finland and praises it as having the best health care in the world, and overall being one of the safest and happiest and healthiest countries in the world. He tours a prison which is essentially like a lovely island resort.

Anyway, I wonder if you can tie your credit card info to a foreign account? I've got a European account and Japanese account, because they come in handy. I was able to get the Killzone 2 demo early for example, using my European account. But I've never tried to purchase anything, only gotten free demos.

I'm too lazy to create a new account and stuff. It's just the thing that why can't they just sell it to everyone, no matter where you live in?

Oh, and yeah. Finland is pretty cool place btw. I'm just pretty ****** about the law-system: if you hurt a guinea-pig (or whatever it's called) you'll get time in the can (propably not too much) but if you rape someone, no-one give's a sh*t. Ya' know, this police officer raped this minor girl (about 16 years old) and he got away with it. A-FRIGGIN-POLICE-OFFICER! Is this some kind of joke?!
