PS3 and AA

Archive: 6 posts

What is the deal with PS3 games and Antialiasing? I have yet to play a title on the PS3 that appears to be using any level of AA. 2X AA would be a noticeable improvement. I can only assume that the PS3 just can't hack it. If that is not the case then the only other thing I can come up with is lazy programmers.2009-08-25 21:09:00

your joking right?

unless your playing on a cinema screen and then 1080 will look very pixelated,
almost every game uses it. I say almost because i havent played them all but all the ones i've played have it

A quick google search brought up this. Post #7 does a great job at explaining it, though I did remember a great article on the differences between the GPUs used in the 360 and PS3. Once I find it I'll post that as well.

No Im not joking. Im playing on a 61" HD display. If AA is being applied its done at a minimum level, not full screen and very poorly. After looking at the list of games provided in the list that BSprague provided, I would definitely not think ALL games or even nearly all games use it. I know the list is not every PS3 game but out of that list of approximately 100 , 57 of them do not use AA.

Thanks for the link. The list just confirmed what I was already thinking. What AA is going on is minimal and just not on the same level as a PC. I guess I was just expecting more from a system designed mainly for gaming.

AA on Playstation hardware is a really strange thing.
I remember in the days of PS2, everyone complained about the lack of AA.
Then Sony, as always started to implement it, saying that devs should plan about AA from the beginning if they wanted to add it, and not try to apply it at the end.

This time is the same.
PS3 is able to do AA, but until devs won't plan it from scratch and add it only in the end, they won't have AA to work out fine.
Many Sony games have good AA, third party titles either don't have AA or have it implemented badly.

Until PS3 surpass the 360 or matches the fanbase, we won't see third party devs making good stuff on PS3.
