Animated Avatar

Archive: 28 posts

Just been playing for ages on an animated Avatar, based on a sig I did a while back.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/image.php?u=4779&dateline=1251209028

this is 125 frames, all rendered from a 3D package and then finished in Photoshop.

I would have liked to have had the flames moving too, but this took it over the memory limit and I didn't want to lose quality - besides - living flame is a nightmare to do!

What does everyone think?

It's looking great, nice slow motion effect!!

I might need you for something soon...you don't happen to have an HD capture device as well do you?

Looks really good - I've dabbled with making GIF's in photoshop, and was able to alright, but nowhere near this quality. I could never reduce the amount of space it took up, even with large areas that remain stationary. I suppose you are probably using some fancy software to do it for you...

If you wanted to make the fire move as well, it would probably be neat to reduce the number of frames and make the dragon heaving (breathing), and reducing the range of motion of the wings [i.e. not flapping]. I'm not sure how tough that would be, but seeing what you've got here leads me to believe you can do anything... Granted, then you have to work out how to make living flames, which as you said is a nightmare.

Thanks Zwollie - and no I don't have that miraculous device - do you know of someone who has one so that I can borrow it and say I've got one?

Thanks Lady - I needed that!

Oooh - someone who understands the difficulties!! Yeah keeping it under 500kb was tricky. My first attempts had the full flame, flame from mouth and swinging camera angle.. but it went over 4.5MB!!

Bearing in mind it took over 5 minutes just to render in the first place, you can imagine I had to do several attempts before I got one that worked. The animation was very tricky too - getting all the keyframes on every joint I was altering was xtremely time-consuming - especially seeing as I wanted it go through a seamless loop.

Weirdly, the dragon is breathing.. but its too small to notice I guess. I thought the wings were the most critical part so I sacrificed the flame

When you save as gif, do you use the export to web function? (ctrl+shift+Alt+S) You can really alter the memory take-up quite a bit - bearing in mind trying to maintain the quality as well - not an easy job.

I wish I could do anything - then all my dreams would be answered!

Thanks springs86 - or is it "really hot" lol

Hmm - have you got a digi camera that can take .mov's?? I can import them into photoshop and play with the quality - The Avatar is only 125x125 anyways so you'd probably lose a lot of the quality anyway. Then the gif formatting will reduce it further!! LOL...

If you don't and you really want it, I could film it using mine and do the same thing??

I've also created a really simple level that allows you to get a good image of your victorian sackdude on a plain white background.

Hmmm, that could work....although I don't have a stationary to keep my cam still during the filming and I would have to put a lot of boxes or whatever on top of each other until I reach my goal.

I'll look into it, thx!!

LOL - the last time I tried this, I put an angled lever-arch file on top of a book on top of a step-ladder!! But it works!

Wow, nice! It looks complicated especially since the whole dragon moves/ changes shape. I probably wouldn't have the patience to make this.2009-08-25 17:47:00

It was complicated - and I don't have the patience.. and this is probably the last I'll ever do in my life... and my next life if I have one!

I don't even know how to put multiple images together for an animated gif in photoshop but I'd like to find out so I too can make my own sackboy animation.2009-08-26 22:27:00

That's fantastic work Rhy. The movement is awesome.

Also while I was studying that I finally figured out what the text in your sig says. I never noticed before , I just assumed it was some sort of foreign 'Tolkienesque' language. Silly me.

I think it says 'Rhyfelwr the celtic warrior' ?

Menu Bar> Windows> Animation - try it out (if you have the feature!) Then put every image into a seperate layer and view each layer in different frames.. if that makes any sense!

Thank you misterv! The movement took ages - there are about 20 joints in the tail alone (even though you can't even see it!!) The wings are split into about 8 joints a piece...

You spotted my "Celtic Warrior"!! I'm impressed! And yes, it's in Elvish, so you are right for thinking Tolkien.

It was a little project to keep my mind occupied - as you can probably appreciate.

Thanks again

i got a question how did you get the
good quality?

i got a question how do you get it soo.....
good quality?

I would have to go through the whole process, which was quite a long one! ;D

The whole process...

I used DAZ3D Studio to create the dragon in the first place (which is a premium model "MilleniumDragon 2". It also has a custom texture applied to it to get the flame wings. The I changed the opacity of the wings and ambient colour to match with the flames underneath.

The flames underneath was another object import into the 3D package.

The I had to create an animation with 125 frames: using 5 keyframes allocated to every joint in the dragon. Then I had to "pose" the dragon at each keyframe in the right position so that when the animation looped, it looked seamless.

After the preview was about right, I added lighting with shadows and rendered the entire animation as seperate 125x125 jpg's.

I now had a folder full of 125 images!!

Next I opened Photoshop and imported every image as a seperate layer.

Then duplicated the first animation frame 124 times and toggled the appropriate layer visibility so that each correct layer shows in each correct frame.

The added the text as a layer show shows on every animation frame.

Also added a border..

Then exported to web as a dithered gif.

The rest you know!

I guess the short answer would be time and patience!

Its not as hard as you might think. I posted a few details in post #20 (a few up from here).

You will however need a reasonably decent art package, like GIMP, Illustrator, Photoshop or paint.net.

The final animation has to be a gif - animated obviously and looped.

If you want, I can go through a step-by step tutorial...

Hi Rhy,

Let me just say, I'll be needing an avatar of my very own at some point, rather than one of the stock ones provided by LBPC. Geddit?
