Archive: 11 posts
im making some charecters in a lvl i just started and wanted to know how to make them look good (there dragons) so thank you for the help lbpc | 2009-08-25 03:41:00 Author: inferedmonkey Posts: 76 |
Without a concept sketch or screenshot of your dragons-in-progress it's really hard to tell how to make them better. That being said, some animation (physics based or using pistons/winches) always helps bring life to characters ? unless you're deliberately going for that cut-out look. | 2009-08-25 04:17:00 Author: slutzinc Posts: 124 |
I always find an image to base my creation off of - either draw it or find it on the internet. deviantart.com is great for finding stuff like this. | 2009-08-25 04:23:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
Sticker them well and make custom stickers so that you don't use up as much thermometer (dissolve is the best material for stickers). For dragons, flams might look good. Take the red candle object, select the flame and copy it to where you want it to go. Then delete the candle and it will use up less thermometer. While the flame is still attatched to the candle it can be tweaked to the right effect. If you put lots in one area then it will look less like a candle flame and more like a big fire. It's hard to say what else would look good since I don't really know what they look like but you could add a moving decoration to make it look more dynamic or to give it a sense of movement. | 2009-08-25 04:35:00 Author: S-A-S--G-U-N-R Posts: 1606 |
I love dragons (I've got a few in my levels) texture and color seem to be the most important for dragons. I like the advice Sasgunr gave you above about the flames too. What I do on my characters is start with a base color sticker. It can be custom or a MM supplied sticker - whatever will look good with your lighting. Then I start layering stickers on top of that. You want to have muscle looking parts (doodles, lines and some of the monster stickers work very well for that) You also may want scales or a bumpy texture. One of the dragons I did I used a textured wood for the material so it would be bumpy, another one is a smooth material but I added tiny dotted stickers for a textured effect on his back. You can also use the "realistic" stickers to add highlights and shading to characters that make them look more sculpted. Just play around on a blank square of whatever material your thinking of using until you get the effect you want. Then go for it on your dragon. Don't forget that lighting can change how stickers look so test it in the lighting your going to be using in your final level. Best way to add details though - bottom line - layer your stickers. | 2009-08-25 04:56:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Adding bits of thin layer can also help to hilight pieces or give different texture. I reccomend you check out a few dragon-y levels while you're at it Off the top of my head, you might want to check out Morgana25's "Tweak the scaredy dragon" as well as chroma stone...1 is it? , Dog-Egg's dragon levels, The Azure Palace by gevurah-22 (the sea monster is close enough if you ask me ), Night of the monsters by Sls10, and Tuckerd by Gravel (its easiest to find his name via a comment... theres probably one on "tweak"). These dragons constitute quite a few different takes on the dragon. Tuckerd and Tweak might not be up... i haven't checked to see if the character design entries have been removed, so i'm not sure =x | 2009-08-25 06:05:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
Yup - Tweak is still up (check the South Pole area) and there's a dragon in Chroma Stone 1 at the end. Gravel's dragon is still up last I checked too. | 2009-08-25 06:10:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |

If you mean johnrulz77 from these forums, his dragons are from a free prize level... i can't remember who the original creator is though. If its someone else, i haven't seen em yet, thanks for the tip. | 2009-08-25 06:30:00 Author: Burnvictim42 Posts: 3322 |
No, I mean Johnrulz77, I just forgot his proper name. He showed me this level with them in. Most of the detail came from it being well stickered/ having thin layers for extra effect like you said. | 2009-08-25 06:38:00 Author: S-A-S--G-U-N-R Posts: 1606 |
I think most of the usefull advices already have been given, but just to add to the list of dragon's levels, i think you can't miss the MrsSpookyBuz ones. There is three level in the series and it is called "Dragon rider". I really loved the dragon because it is visually impressive, it show very natural movements and constitute a whole gameplay element | 2009-08-25 07:29:00 Author: Takelow Posts: 1355 |
