Hoola Man Jenkins' Cabin: The Trilogy

Alright! After a ridiculously long time, (almost 5 months actually:blush I've finally finished my Hoola Man Jenkins Trilogy. Hopefully with everyone's help, I can get a great rating and lots of plays!

The levels are short because of thermo issues with the trees, but I just thought they looked so good I didn't want to change it.

So please enjoy, and take your time!

NICE!!!!!!! I've been waiting with baited breath for this series!

I'm on it as soon as my wife goes to bed in about an hour.... from what I've seen so far, these are VERY cool. Feedback soon!

Thanks! (By the way, I happened to notice that part 3 took you a while to finish....So I'm anticipating trouble. Haha)2009-08-25 03:07:00

Heh.... yeah, but I was also doing some testing while I was finishing. It wasn't THAT tough.

But, here's my feedback on the levels:

The visual style is impeccable. I loved the characters, the humor, and the premise.

Couple things:

Since the first level is so short, I would call it more an "Introduction" rather than part 1. Also, at the end of it I wouldn't put the filled up thermo message.

The 2nd level has several "wow" moments - I think seeing the perspective looking at the rocks falling along with the small rocks was classic. Also, the log float on the river was really well done.

Now, the third part really surprised me - the first 2 levels were so easy and light-hearted but suddenly you have that rock-balancing part and the end boss - both of which were fairly difficult. This ramp-up on difficulty could frustrate some players that got used to the easy-going first 2... but it was definately my favorite part of the series.

On the part 2 description I would lose the "Duh" - will probably rub players the wrong way.

I really enjoyed this series - it's fun, quirky, and has a genuinely original style about it. I'm not sure many players will "get it" but I do.

Very cool! I gave each 5 stars and a heart. Great job!

Hey there! Just finished all three and had some feedback for you

Part 1
+ visually stunning
+ your usual brand of quirky humor
+ very short

I think your thermo got eaten by complex shapes or stickers on this one. It looks great but it's really REALLY short. I agree with CCubbage - throw a prequel tag on it.

Part 2
+ Visually stunning
+ Longer gameplay which is nice.
+ Love the banter with the Magical guy
+ Camera angles are dramatic
+ Balaced Rock is Hillarious (like Wile-E-Coyote cartoon)
+ Cool way to end it with the raft

Making your way back to the right side of the cliff isn't instinctual but people should figure it out. The only other problem I had is when you cross the big tree if you jump from that tree layer you don't automatically go to the layer in front. You need to jump on the trunk of the tree then forward a plane or you fall. Just a little bit frustrating when it happens the first time.

Part 3

+ Raft is cool
+ Plunge is a nifty idea but I almost wanted it longer/more dramatic
+ Cool looking cave
+ Freaky creatures in the cave - nice sound design
+ Boss is awesome and weird all at once - It screams of your design style.
+ Liked the humor at the end.

I ran into some trouble on this level:
- how to get the middle set of bubbles under water - couldn't get into the right plane
- The sprint loaded platform that takes you up to where you unite the sponge halves was hard to use. Took many MANY tries for me to get up there. Just a possible point of frustration for players.
- managed to break the magical guy in the long area with the creatures that come up. One of them smashed the magic guy and I had to start the level over.
- Boss it's very hard to tell when you should grab the sponge but that's just my opinion.

On the whole I liked the series. I think they are visually very strong and have some great moments and humor in them. I don't think the mainstream LBP player is going to really understand these levels at all though. I had a group of younger players I randomly met and they were not into it at all. Just letting you know what I saw out there "in the field" as it were.

I gave them all 5 stars. I can tell you worked really hard on these too and not just because I see you in create mode all the time. lol. Thanks for sharing them!

Thanks Morgana.

I kind of made this series knowing it wouldn't be as popular as my last, even though I would consider it a HUGE step forward in my abilities as a creator.

There shouldn't be any problem with getting the bubbles...so that's weird. I'll check it out.

I don't know what to do about the magical guy breaking...First of all, my thermometer on that level is completely done, but I can't just emit another guy because he's attached to a piston above the scene.

On the X2 scene, did you try jumping at the right time? I found it pretty easy to do. I can actually even do it without jumping by timing the platform to go up just as I land on it.

For some reason I can't get part 1 and 2 to show their pictures...Part 3's picture has been showing for hours...

I might have had the timing off. I was playing with a group of very young players and it's like herding cats sometimes ya know. I'll have to try it again to see if it was a group dynamic or just me playing lousy. lol.

Can you make it on the creatures so the gas can kill you but they don't go high enough to crush the magic guy? it was the edge of their mouths that was crushing it. If you just adjust the piston height it should fix the problem without costing you thermo.

That's a good idea...That might actually make it harder because then you couldn't use the magic guy to block yourself on the side...2009-08-25 04:53:00

Alright, I took a few people's suggestions, and fixed a MAJOR bug that I found from reading the comments on the level. Apparently the genie attack that drops from his eyes was causing the sponge to break if the player took too long to defeat him.

I changed the attack completely so this won't happen anymore.

I played all three parts when I read your message, and you already know if I liked them or not.

I don't have much suggestions to give, all I want to say that it was very well done, had lots of humor which I always love in levels.

My favorite line in the level was where you ask the little guy how he's floating and he replies it's just two invisible winches, and the conversation here is just hilarious, thanks for the laughs.

Anyways, I agree the 3rd part is very different from the other two, mainly because of the difficulty but this is my favorite section, the first time I played the level, the speeches at the end were disappearing because I wasn't paying attention to my screen and I wasn't closing the ones I would've already read earlier, not so sure if you can make it so they all stay until you manually close them, but that would help greatly.

Anyways, like I already told you. You got yourself 4 hears (3 for the levels and one for you, no there isn't a secret fourth level haha. )

Thanks, I enjoyed the trilogy very much.

Yeah, the dialogue at the end was really difficult to pull off actually... Because the magic mouths were forced to be far apart, so if I had the player chose when to close them, usually the last 2 messages would disappear before they could read them. So I set up a timing system that activates the next part of the conversation at the appropriate time as long as the player is reading the text at a normal pace. Unfortunately, for situations like yours, it doesn't work out too well....There's really nothing else I can do though...

Thanks for the hearts by the way! I'm honored.

Well firstly, your design (characters especially) is ace. : ) There's a really solid cartoon-like vibe to the visuals that i loved. Also, the set pieces are in Pt2 are just great, by the time i got to part three, i had no idea what to expect next. Funny dialogue too.

The platforming in 3 was a surprise, it went very hardcore all of a sudden, which I thoguht was great. If you play all three consecutively, it felt like it was placed in exactly the right spot, a challenge to get stuck into after the relatively easy first two parts.

With the boss, I wasn't sure if i was supposed to close the camera or follow the falling rocks down the path. I think my instinct was to close the cameras so I could see myself instead. Have you though about putting having magic mouths appear only the first time you grab each sponge.....?

I played them earlier, but I didn't know you had made them !

I played the first first, it was short, but really good. So I played the second, better And the third too ! I haven't understood how beat the boss (maybe because I'm not English, I haven't get everything ) but this series is really great, I liked them. Good job.

Oh, by the way, could you please try my level " The Adventures of Tom Sawyer : Chapter 1 " ? This would be nice ^^ (If you don't mind, search my ID Teddyboy13 and choose " More Level From This Author ", you'll be able to see it like that, it doesn't appear otherwise )

Hmmm. Since there's 2 in a row that couldn't beat the boss, here's how "I" did it:

You have to hit the boss in the head once with each grab sponge. But, when you grab the sponge the rock that falls takes a while to come down, so you have to time when you start it. I did one at a time since it allowed me to try timing in a bit different until it hit.

I played the trilogy off the cool pages this morning and was struck by how short they were so I think it's good you have released them at the same time.

Not a lot to say about the intro level. One thing about the scoreboard: it looked like it had the three layer part on it and it was a bit oddly spliced into the green ground. If it has somehow eluded you let me just say that you can bomb off that part and get a thin layer scoreboard. But you know how to resize it, so you probably knew that.

I really liked the boulders in the beginning of part two. Very dramatic and epic setpiece.

The only problem I found was in part three when I got stuck under the rubble after the long drop and had to try again. No big deal.

My favorite part in the levels is balancing on the boulders. I desperately wanted the bubbles at the end and died a bunch of times before I got them and probably lost more points than I eventually got.

The boss made me a bit frustrated. I'm not sure what eventually killed it but it took a really long time. Was it a defined number of hits or one hit with each of the three blue things??? I thought I hit it several times in the head with each and that every time it yelled counted as a hit. If it was explained in speech-bubbles before the boss it went over my head! After a while I just wanted it to be over! If it's a number of hits you may want to lower it a bit.

My other gripe would be the silence. If you don't want more music maybe some environmental effects, some wind or water or something in the distance to bring a little more life to the world.

You've found a good style and humor and the levels are very well put together. Good work!

Now let me be the first to ask for some feedback. My level Vanilla Breeze is very different than yours so I don't know what you will think of it, but if you like it or not let me know in a comment when you have the chance. You don't need to be as long winded as I ended up being here!

The only problem I found was in part three when I got stuck under the rubble after the long drop and had to try again. No big deal.

I think you're talking about the end of part 2. Yeah I actually even changed about half of the rubble to stickered sponge, but I guess that didn't completely eliminate the problem...

My favorite part in the levels is balancing on the boulders. I desperately wanted the bubbles at the end and died a bunch of times before I got them and probably lost more points than I eventually got.

Haha, that part is even hard for me. When I play through it I usually skip it because I end up losing to many lives. There are quite a few secrets though that aren't as obvious as that one.

I do have the magical guy tell you to drop one from each tunnel, but I admit that it's not obvious enough. I thought I added lights to each sponge to show which one you've successfully used, but apparently I need to fix that.

My other gripe would be the silence. If you don't want more music maybe some environmental effects, some wind or water or something in the distance to bring a little more life to the world.

Sigh... I added as many sounds as I possibly could. Part 3 especially though, has no room left at all. I really didn't want music, but I'll play around with a few...

You've found a good style and humor and the levels are very well put together. Good work!

Thanks!

HI! I've try your trilogy, and let me say that is awesome,i'm a visual/graphic side fanatic and is quickly clear that under this point of view is better by far(faaaar) than the average level

+visually really well done
+visually cool and stylish
+great color choice
+great non playable support characters
+Nice humor (the bird that say freedom is priceless, even better than the magical guy)
+You can hold the same style in all three parts,is easy see them as an unique thing
+giant snake are really cool
+the Genie is HUGE
+i liked a lot the flying rising rocks as platform, because me too just in those days i'm working on something similar
+flowing gameplay experience

-Maybe on the graphic side there is a little down step in the third part(but main cause is that is'nt easy make a cave too much brillant and various, anyway i like the use of the stiker to make more colourish the stone material)
-I don't like so much the final boss mechanics,i feel it a little bit slow and indirect

Anyway :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: + i don't understand why is'nt yet in the cool level section

Wait for your next series!

ps: for F4F tell me about this: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=15462
Hope you enjoy it!

Heya! I got the prequel to load - finally - but no luck with 2 & 3 yet... we've got big internet connection "issues" at the moment - HOWEVER.... I just wanted to say quickly that yes i think your thermo got maxed with all the detail BUT SO WORTH IT! The trees were fabulous! Very visually beautiful and the collapsing cabin was so well done. Hoola Man Jenkins was creepy as (if he'd offered ME his cabin I'd have run in the other direction and slept in my truck!). Does 'Hoola Man' mean something in particular? Or did it just sound appropriate? Because it is - very. Looking forward to 2 & 3.. at some stage...2009-08-28 14:34:00

Played this earlier today, unforunately i was invited by ghostrider to get some items before i had the time to finish it, but i did get a little bit into part 3

Really enjoyed the visual style, and the humor. It's too bad the levels were that short

- how to get the middle set of bubbles under water - couldn't get into the right plane

I don't think you figured it out you actually have to walk out of the water then switch planes before entering the water again to get all the bubles- I just figured it was supposed to be like that, sorta like hidden score bubbles

Beautiful levels, great gameplay, and very addictive. I really loved the design of your levels. They really complemented the theme of your level. I really enjoyed the first and second levels. However, the third level proved to be too frustrating for me. Still though, these are a great set of levels. Highly Recommended! :star::star::star::star:2009-08-29 00:39:00

I'll just post my main impressions after playing through all three levels:

Pros:
- Great level design - some things I haven't seen before, like the river flowing from the mountain towards me, past some trees; the perspective was really cool
- Some parts were visually stunning (especially the falling rocks)
- Some fun stuff in each level (the log ride; rolling rock puzzles; Genie Puzzle; etc)
- Not difficult or frustrating
- The character design of the bird (although I've seen that before...) and the man were really cool

Cons:
- The first level was really short
- I felt like the truck in the beginning was odd because I didn't hear the engine running
- Music and more sounds throughout each level would have been nice - some parts felt empty because there was no sound
- Not many (if any) secret areas .. unless of course I missed them!
- I didn't like how every time I hit a button to hit the boss, the camera scrolled up. Of course after reading the posts above, I didn't realize that all you had to do was have a successful hit from each button...

Overall:
I really enjoyed the series! It was an original and unique adventure. It was fun, humorous, and even had some "wow" moments. Great Job!!!
4:star::star::star::star: for each level

F4F - Check out my "Real Myst: Channelwood Age" if you get the chance - thanks!

I was out of town for a few days, so I wasn't able to play the published version, but it's the first thing I did when I got home! Right off the bat, I noticed that you fixed a lot of the camera angle issues that I had when I play tested it. They allow you to see the environment and jumps much better now.

The environment looks great and as always, you created some extremely cool/creepy/weird/awesome characters. The dialogue was hilarious and I found it easier to follow the story than my playtest as well. Good job on that.

I love some of the moments in Part 2, the jump across the canyon, the Looney Tunes style rock and the log ride down the river are all fun moments! It is a bummer that the levels had to be so short though. I always felt like it was just getting started but then it would end. That's the sacrifice you make when adding a lot of visual detail though.

Part 3 seemed a bit longer though and you added some nice platforming challenges. I originally complained about the difficult of the rolling rock obstacle and found the sponge addition very helpful.

As I told you before, your genie is awesome looking. He's another one of your crazy creations and he's fantastic. The fight with him is pretty fun, but the inability to see both the "nector" and the genie at the same time is kind of frustrating. It makes it difficult to time the drops. I'm not sure how to fix it other than shrinking your genie, which is probably out of the question right now.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it and I think you made a lot of great improvements to the beta version. Nice job!

That's strange...I haven't heard that from anyone else. I just checked and they loaded fine for me from the community levels... All I can say is try again?:

Finally got them!! It's an ongoing issue with our internet server and the fact that our PS3's on wireless, etc. Nothing you need to worry about at your end : )
Now, down to business! I loved playing these three levels and did so several times. Very atmospheric (and i KNEW that Hoola Man Jenkins was a bit nasty underneath!). Your sound effects were highly effective and I particularly enjoyed the camera angles which added to the drama. Your little magic guy was bizarre in a very cute way and the other 2, Hoola and the Genie were downright freaky which I'm sure is what you must've been aiming for.

I thought the descent down the rock face was brilliant! Don't know why I never thought of that myself! The logs and water were fabulously well done and, again, good choice of sound made it very authentic. I actually didn't notice that there was no music - I was too engrossed in the gameplay.
The creatures in the cave were wonderfully gross! Very enjoyable : ) That bit with the rolling rock was HARD. I lost ALL my points trying to get those ones on the lower ledge. That's greed for you!

If there were any anti-climaxes or frustrations for me it was these:
Prequel: i couldn't see the scoreboard properly - it was a bit far back. The surround was great but I think it may actually have just been the camera angle which prevented a clear view.

Pt 2: The dialogue as you enter the cave was funny and would've been even better if it hadn't been triggered slightly before my sackgirl was in position. The camera angle was perfect for it, but I was hidden by the rocks. Maybe if the proximity switch (which i assume is what you used) was a tad further to the left, it would be perfecto! The same thing when you dip into the (name escapes me) magic water well... thingy - the cut scene on the ladder comes in a little too quickly and spoils the sound and look of that lovely little moment. A minor detail...
That boulder on top of the mountain was a little anti-climactic as I was half expecting it to chase me down the hill but nothing happened at all until i was half way up the fallen tree bridge. Very well done, otherwise.

Pt 3: This was flat-out awesome. I loved how it continued straight on from the previous episode. I was a little confused as to how the cabin came to be at the end, but it didn't really matter. The one frustration I had with the boss fight was not being able to see where the genie was in relation to the rolling blue things. i could watch one or the other but not both. Eventually i got the timing right - mostly by luck - but each time i played it I got a bit quicker. I'm not sure the camera would let you pan out that far so doubt you could do much about it, really. Just saying it would've been helpful.

All in all, 3 marvellous and thoroughly enjoyable levels. I gave them 4, 5 and 5 hearts respectively and hearted you as well. Thanks for the time and effort : )

I have to say that CCubage put into words exactly what I was thinking. The first two, while too short looked absolutely beautiful. It's times like this I wish for a larger thermometer.

The third level was indeed far more difficult than the first two, and this could definitely put off some players.

Overall I really enjoyed the series though... great job!
