Are you happy with the new direction taken by Resident Evil?

Archive: 10 posts

Title.
Well... starting from Resident Evil 4, the series turned from Horror to Action...
What you think? I like both, but a bit more the Horror ones... Resident Evil 2 is my favourite ever, one of the best games i ever played.
The new action REs are really funny, and the new controls are pretty good.
But i would like an Horror RE with the new gameplay... :kz:

I really loved RE5 to be honnest. And i think this kind of action/horror game is a good thing. I don't think that RE1 was really an horror game per se. I think there was great moment of tension in the game but not really horror sequences and feeling. But i think iwas younger and this kind of game moment had a bigger impact on me than now.
If i want horror, i turn myself on game as a Silent Hill..

Absolutely. In fact I don't think the gameplay style in the Resident Evil series has ever changed. Yes they switched up the combat interface in 4, and added the sometimes frustrating co-op system in 5, but it's always been heavily action-oriented.

Since the first game you've had lots of guns and characters that were more than adept at using them (except that bonus character in RE2, with no ammo ). I know Resident Evil defined the Survival-Horror genre, but there was never real horror in there. The only fear came from the making sure you don't die, but you get that with any action game when pressed into a tight corner.

I disagree with the the poster above me about the fact that RE1 didnt have much horror.

For the time it was a very scary game, i recently played the remake for Gamecube and i was astonished that they had improved the graphics massively and added new aspects which didnt retract from the scariness:
Such as Crimson head zombies (if you dont burn the corpses there's a chance they turn into faster tougher zombies later in the game.)
Some zombies can follow you through doors!

such additions increased the scaryness of the game to the now desensitised world.

Then i played RE2 after, that wasnt as scary as number 1 but it was more Jumpy.
Very good.

Then i played number 3. Nemesis!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one of my favourites just because he's a sweet characters and such a pain in the ***!.

I do like the direction they've changed for number 4 and 5 but as my friend and i were discussing number 4 and 5 have a lot of stuff in common: animations, camera angles, enemies types etc.

my friend didnt like no:5 as much as no:4 because it was shorter and they reused alot so he feels if anything it should have been longer.
I thought they were equally as good and why fix whats not broke. Although some people want a new direction once more. Some more innovation.

Who knows you decide.
I do suppose RE5 could have afforded to be longer.

I really liked RE5. I just loved getting infinite ammo! But then it got really repetitive.2009-08-25 03:19:00

... But is a RE with infinite ammo a true RE? 2009-08-25 07:41:00

Indeed.

Me personally, I love classic and new RE.
My favourite will always be Re2 (also my introduction to the series) but I have no problems with where the series has gone in gameplay terms.

I do have a serious problem where the game has gone storywise though, when I saw Wesker and Jill in RE5 I was really bummed at how they were milking characters from previous installments.

I've enjoyed the change to more action oriented gameplay, and RE4 is probably one of my favorite games ever, but I was disappointed with RE5. I mean, I thought it was a great looking game, but I really think the "stop and shoot" controls have got to go. They've become so very dated. The developers have said it's a design choice that helps create tension, but I don't buy it. Left 4 Dead allowed complete freedom to run, jump, and shoot all at the same time while maintaining tension and I don't see why RE couldn't do the same.2009-08-25 17:21:00

Um, that depends on the definition of a true RE. If a true RE means it's called Resident Evil, then yes. If a true RE means it's like the original Resident Evil, then no, but I couldn't care less.

I have some great memories of the original RE. In the first two games I remember playing them with my friend Dave in the dark, at night, and my GOD. MY GOD!! There were points where we'd shriek like girls, pause the controller and throw it across the room. One time he threw something he was holding at the screen he was so startled. Good times.

that doesn't happen anymore - although i visited him for the first time in years last october and we played Dead Space together - it was like old times! At one point the giant tentacle crashes through the hallway - we were both expecting a single little zombie-creature, no problem - but this tentacle fills up the entire screen, and it was so shocking the following happened: 1) I screamed and fell out of my chair, 2) Dave's leg shot out and cramped up horribly. The tentacle killed him as he dropped his controller and squirmed around on the floor in agony from the sudden leg spasm.

God that was good times.

Anyway - RE5 I enjoyed purely for the co-op. I scarcely played that game in solo. It's just another run-and-gun game. It's another Gears of War, Uncharted, etc. etc. Don't get me wrong, it has some polish, there's definitely fun to be had, but Resident Evil's gradually fallen off its lofty perch for me.
