Languages (Bi lingual - Multi lingual thread)

Archive: 52 posts

Ok not sure if anyone has made a thread about this, But I would like to talk about different languages, and maybe we can learn some words with each other.

I've been on numerous multi-lingual sites lately, and I would like to test it out with this forums with the LBP community.

So tell us what language you know, and maybe we can teach other some words and phrases, etc.

Languages I know:

English (Somewhat strong) (Universal)
Tagalog (Strong) (Philippines)
Spanish (Weak) (Almost universal)
Japanese (Mid) (Japan)

------------------------
I would like to learn:
French
Japanese
Spanish

--------------------

Anata wa Nihonjin Desu ka? - Japanese
Aren't you japanese? - English
Kala ko Hapones ka. - Tagalog
No es usted japanese? - Spanish

Correct me if I'm wrong. My spanish is super weak!!

NOO GOOGLING (more funner if you know it naturally than looking it up on google :|)

Yes, Im pretty sure alot of us wants to learn Irish.
Always good to broaden your knowledge with other languages.

Is it Deea or Daia, Dueet or dweet?
-------
And wow saying "How are you" in Irish sounds cool

--------------
Tagalog is easy to learn, almost half the words are spanish (mostly objects).
Tagalog is used in the world of Philipines (If you know English, your safe too because everyone knows English there!)

But would be safe to learn this language, more provincial areas are somewhat bad at english. And provincial areas has the best vacation spots!!

"Kamusta" - Hello/Hi (Spanish is "Kamustas" I think)
"Tara" - Let's go
"Ano ginagawa mo?" - what are you doing?

"Ate" (Ahhh-Te) - Sister
"Kuya" (Kuu-Yaa) - Brother

I'm fluent in Norwegian (obviously) and English, but other than that it's not much to brag about. I did take French at school, but I can't remember enough to complete a basic sentence. On the other hand, ask me how to curse like a viking... 2009-08-23 23:58:00

I love languages but sadly I don't claim to be fluent in more than one. . . English. . . hopefully that was obvious.

But I did take 3 years of japanese in high school, got pretty good at it too.
In college I took the highschool equivolent of 1 year of ASL and 1 year of Portugese.
I'm affraid that last one might have been a mistake because now my Portugese mixes with my Japanese. Because my japanese classes were so long ago, and over the years I had no japanese friends or reason to keep up with the language. . . the sharpness of memory faded and my nihongo became succeptable to a Portugese invasion.

Totemo warukatta da tou omou. . . -Thats supposed to be informal japanese for "I think it was very bad"- but as i've said, my japanese is rusty and full of portugese.

Ok hmm I need to practice my Japanese still. I made a Lang-8 account, really really good site for people to teach you a different language and correct you. (If you want to join, please make me invite you instead of registering =)

Anyways

Boku wa Kurisuchiyan Ransudesu (My name is Christian Lance)
Watashi kuro no kami (I have black hair, not the write structure but close)
Omae/Anata wa anashi eigo masu? (Do you speak english?)

Matane (see you later)
or Sayounara (Goodbye close to forever or unexpected to see each other again)

Most Americans are unbelievably lazy when it comes to languages... thus, they expect everyone else to learn english. As a result, the work the rest of you put into learning english results in us not having to make an effort.

I took French in high school and came out knowing about 10 words....

On the other hand, my wife actually took the time to learn Spanish fluently, so not ALL of us are like that. But once again, because she learned it I just take her everywhere I go where they may speak spanish.

I had Spanish in high school can understand a lot more than I can speak.

I'm currently learning Japanese (just to keep my brain active - work can be so mundane) and I've been really happy using Japanesepod101.com. You can subscribe for free on itunes and they are pretty funny sometimes.

Ok.... so what you're saying is "I'm" the lazy American...

Now I know why your levels always look better than mine.

It's definately interesting, though - that Americans are so much lazier at learning languages than other countries. I have a lot of friends from across the seas, and they tell me how quickly they learn english in school.

Here in America, I don't know a single person who ACTUALLY learned any 2nd language in school. Usually we treat it as "becoming familiar" with another language. Everyone I know that learned another language are either self-taught or took the initiative to hang around people who speak other languages in order to learn it.

Well sure.... we COULD.... but that would sort of defeat the purpose of being english speaking americans and feeling like the rest of the world should just learn english....

hola amigos como estan? (it isnt "kamustas" count its "como estas" = how are you )
so i obviously speak spanish
I learned english just from watching tv and little bits here and there, it was easy ! the only problem being
that since i never went to any formal english school i sometimes make mistakes with the grammar but still it rocks!

Some words, seeing that everyone wants to speak spanish
all vocals in spanish have just one sound

a = ah
e = eh
i = ee
o = oh
u = oo

Como estas?(Coh-moh eh-stah-ss) - How Are you?
Buenos Dias(Boo-eh-nos Dee-as) - Good Morning or Good day
Lbpc es muy bueno y divertido(eh-ss Moo-ee boo-eh-no ee dee-ver-tee-doh) - Lbpc is very good and fun

hope you learn something

At the moment I only really know english. I can speak Italian and Japanese but have a very VERY limited vocabulary.

I would love to learn more japanese though, at one stage a was looking through the internets trying to find a site that I could use to teach myself but failed to come across anything good. So if anyone does know of any sites that I can use to teach myself it would be greatly appreciated.
