Websites slowing down (mainly YouTube and RapidShare) - Effects of recession?

Archive: 11 posts

Lately within the past few weeks I've noticed that YouTube has been very slow as far as watching videos goes. I've been wondering why this is and have thought of 2 possible explanations:

I've noticed this too. AFAIK from slowest to fastest, the formats are HQ, HD, and SQ. Maybe the economy is responsible for this and Google had to cut back on bandwidth spending? Either that or more people are using YouTube to escape the recessionary life? Or possibly both?

I've also noticed that RapidShare is giving horrible download speeds and broken downloads, not to mention downloads cutting in and out. Could this be because of the reasons above also? Discuss.

It could possibly be a minor virus that's been spreading.

I haven't noticed a change in speeds yet but I'll keep an eye on it.

4chan raided twitter and other sites maybe they're just doing youtube now.

More news on this please? And here are ping times:

YouTube main site: 19.75 ms average
Random YT video server 1: 50.75ms average
Random YT video server 2: 49.5ms average
Random YT video server 3: 51.33ms average w/1 timeout
Random YT video server 4: 50.67ms average w/1 timeout

RapidShare main site: 127.25ms average
Random RS file server 1: 132ms average
Random RS file server 2: 122ms average
Random RS file server 3: 127.5ms average
Random RS file server 4: 121.5ms average

Now things look more clear. A server running at optimum speed should respond in between 20-30ms, right?

Sometimes /b/tards like to choose a random site to crash. It was on the news that they chose to target twitter and facebook and managed to crash their server. Wouldn't surprise me if they also went after youtube.2009-08-23 23:36:00

I used the command prompt and the "ping" command. This takes 4 samples of the response time between you and a server. For example, if I want to know the response time for MSN, I'd type "ping www.msn.com". It's very useful if you suspect a site is slow or inconsistent. For the file and video servers, I attempted to download a file from each (using www.keepvid.com for YT) and once I did that IE showed me the open/save/cancel dialogue, which shows the server the file is being mirrored from. I then pinged that with cmd and got the response times.

It does sound likely. But according to the ping times, RapidShare is in much worse condition than YouTube right now.

Update. Both YT and RS are performing better, time of day doesn't seems to have any impact on performance. Last night I was trying to download a file from RS and got speeds as low as 28K/s and frequent broken downloads. Tonight I'm maintaining a stable speed of around 125K/s on a 3Mb/s connection. Much better than last night. And for grins, ping times are still in those high ranges.

As far as YT goes, HQ downloads are doing much better as well but ping times are still around 45-50ms for video servers. I hope these improvements continue!
