Need an external HDD that's compatible with my PS3

Archive: 5 posts

I have a buttload of content I want to pass from both my laptop and PC to an external storage device, like an HDD. Thing is, I'd like it to be compatible with my PS3... It has to do with the format or something like that, right? If possible, where could I find one online at a good value price?2008-09-12 19:28:00

Hi mate, any external USB HDD will work as long as it is formatted to FAT32, just plug it into the USB port and it will show up as a drive.

A better option might be to replace the PS3 HDD with say a large 300GB+ 2.5 SATA Notebook / Laptop HDD and when you buy the new HDD buy an external 2.5 HDD USB drive case (10 bucks here) and put the old 40, 60 or 80 GB drive that came with your PS3 into that. Then you have a good external USB HDD that you can use to move stuff around and a nice big HDD in the PS3.

If you are going to buy a new one for the PS3 it has to be a 2.5 laptop HDD preferably 5200 RPM as that is what comes with the PS3 though 7200 supposedly works. I recently installed a 400GB Samsung 2.5 SATA Notebook HDD that cost me $140.00 AUD which I imagine would be even cheaper for you and use the old 40GB PS3 drive in an external USB case for backing up or taking files to mates place's or whatever.

Oh and this is the thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=1282&page=2) where I asked similar questions last week

EDIT: Also Aero these two threads will give you very very good info on exactly what you need (http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/ps3cheatsandcodes/a/PS3HDDDriveSwap.htm) and exactly how to do it (http://vgstrategies.about.com/od/ps3cheatsandcodes/ss/PS3HDDUpgrade.htm)

Good description, QuozL. But I think some people would prefer 7200 rpms over 5400. Takes less time to install games/demos.2008-09-12 21:25:00

Wow Quoz, thanks for that reply. o____o Explains plenty.

So what I think I'll do is just buy a new external HDD... Maybe 500GB or 1TB, not sure yet. It'll be for the PS3, but also for my laptop and PC... I just have so much stuff I end up moving back and forth you know? The HDD isn't going anywhere though, it'll stay put right here on my desk. XD And again, thank you.
