Tested how rating and tagging is recorded

Archive: 8 posts

Now I've seen CCubbage has said this before but I've from how it's been said I've never been sure whether he's surmising or actually tested it, so apologises if you have CCubbage!

Anyway, my latest level is currently locked and published online as a back up. I sent the key to it for my neighbour so he could just play through it and see the progress I'm making as I go along.

He played it the other day and rated it 5 stars and tagged it 'beautiful'.

He then played it again while I was there and I told him to rate it one star and tag it something differently out of curiosity.

The level then fell to one star straight away. This obviously proves that everyone only gets to rate each level once and it is just your last rating that counts. It working this way is obviously common sense as it stops people being able to spam rate their friends levels to get them higher up (or the other way around with enemies!). I just thought it was worth mentioning seeing as I actually tested it and wasn't just guessing

However, this doesn't apply to tags, as I said, the first tag he gave it was 'beautiful'. When he played it again he put 'repetitive' (you should of seen the smug smile on his face from being able to rate my levels badly, you'd think he was bout 8 years old not 40!). Anyway, both the 'beautiful' and 'repetitive' tags are now there on the information screen showing that all tags count!

Some of this may have been suspected or known to people already, just thought it was worth bringing up seeing as I tested it!

Thanks Jack, I didn't know that! I think you should only be able to tag once just like the rating, what if someone really doesn't like you and just keeps tagging? I wonder if you tag Lousy a million times if it will make it show first on the 3 tags that show when you first see a level..

Edit: Reading that last sentence back it really made no sense lol sorry about that.. Hope you understand what I meant.

Yeah, RangerZero and I did a TON of testing on this between our levels way back when the cool levels changed so we could build a "publishing strategy". So, yes, spamming tags works but only the last rating counts.

I also personally did a bunch of different experiments with publishing and I found these additional statements to be true:

- There ARE people sitting out there waiting to low-rate newly published levels just to either be mean or because they want you to have less of a chance of climbing cool pages. I found that quite a large percentage of the time publishing a brand new level, my level Splat Invaders Saga would IMMEDIATELY get a 1 or 2 star rating. Sometimes this was accompanied by a H4H, which tells me some H4H people are actually maliceous, not just asking for a heart - but at the same time trying to hurt the rating.

- The vast majority of players (probably young children) will generally leave the rating on what it defaulted to when they exit - the first time they rate it's 3, which is why it seems like your level immediately gets 3 stars when publishing it for the first time. Problem is... this is also why once you are at 3 it seems to get cemented this way. So, have some friends play it and get a good rating as early as possible.

- For a difficult level, publishing in time zones seems to make a difference. If I post 9:00PM and on EST, I seem to get a better rating if the level is a bit challenging - on a school night more kids have gone to be at this time, which means you can initially target a more mature audience and get more hearts and better ratings.

Nice discoveries. It's strange that all the tags you leave on a level wil count, but only your last rating of the level will count. Shouldn't they also only have your last tag on a level count? That's another reason why the tag system should be updated on this game.2009-08-22 20:54:00

I totally agree.... someone decided they didn't like one of my levels so they spam-posted the tag "Rubbish" until it became the primary tag. They were so relentless I ended up taking the level down. It's really irritating that a single person can mess up a level like that.

While they are at it, they should put the rubbish tag where it belongs--in the rubbish bin.

It and "lousy" offer no real descriptive value. "braaains" I could do with out, but at least it's not abusive.

also, I've noticed that certain countries tend to be easier on a level. American kids are brutal.

~I digress
It's good to have confirmation about the ratings. thanks!

From the start it should have been a DESCRIPTIVE tag system and that you only could tag you OWN stuff. The tag would have been used for the reason tags exist on 99,9% of other systems out there: to ease searching.

Right now LBP is ridiculous because both the stars, the tags and the hearts are actually a rating system.

The design flaws of LBP will never stop to fascinate me!

Don't forget that a person could just enter a level and leave to add plays to the level.2009-08-23 08:44:00
