A question about epilepsy and levels

Archive: 7 posts

I was playing around with wheels and lighting until i made a level that constantly shifts global lighting and has a strange wheel with flowers on it spinning fast and constantly alternating between directions, a spinning spiral, several emitters that emit balloons and cows, and a camera that bounces around randomly. All that in one room. It will probably induce epilepsy. And if you don't have epilepsy, it may make you feel sick.

The reason i'm posting this in the Help forum, instead of the Level Showcase forum, is this:

My question is, is this allowed on LBP, even with a big fat warning? And also, would any guys here (WITHOUT EPILEPSY!!!) please test out the level and tell me whether it's ok? It might make you feel sick, so take that into consideration before testing the level.

If it's too dangerous for people with epilepsy, i will remove it immediately. But I need to know if it is.

The level's name is:
Bad Trip (WARNING! EPILEPSY INDUCING!) MAY MAKE YOU FEEL SICK!

But just search for Bad Trip

Absolutely it's allowed. You need to understand that those with epilepsy and are affected by this strobing effect are likely aware of their condition and take the necessary precautions (hopefully) to avoid playing games that may induce a seisure.

The fact that you gave a BIG FAT WARNING is an excellent effort on your part to make sure no harm comes to anyone from playing your level... kudos to you for doing that.

As for play testing it, I won't likely be on much this weekend as I have lot's of work around the house this weekend... but maybe someone else can give you a hand there.

All video games have warnings for people who have epilepsy. You're covered by that. 2009-08-22 01:40:00

Ah, yes, that's true, thanks

If i wouldn't do that, probably people with epilepsy would try out the level. But, i think it would make people without epilepsy sick as well. It contains strobing GLOBAL lighting (therefore, the epilepsy warning), a camera that moves around randomly (causing motion sickness), rotating objects rotating at a really fast speed (a spiral and a wheel with flowers on it, making for a funny effect), and objects continously being hurled through the level. And smoke being continiously blasted at you.
And it all happens in one room, so there's quite a lot going on.

Alright. Anyone else up for a playtest?

I think you are safe. Most people with epilepsy that react to strobing lights, react at a higher rate than you are likely to generate with this game.2009-08-22 06:11:00

remember that an episode of pokemon got banned due to a huge pikachu powered electrical explosion. and if it's that easy to trigger epilepsy then some levels are bound to trigger it!2009-08-22 06:38:00

I'll go play test it - hope I don't get a seizure

EDIT: Just play tested it, watched it for about 2-3 minutes, and nothing happened.(Aside from the cardboard box with the camera zone attached to it going outside of the level >.>) It probably won't give anyone seizures, especially if they haven't experienced an epilepsy related seizure before. However, it's still a good idea to keep the warning up there - just to be safe
