Lightning machine

Archive: 16 posts

So, playing around in create mode, I got the idea to build a contraption that will simulate lightning. I've used mag switches and pistons to control two global lightning tool objects. I hope someone better than me at creating (meaning, most) can take a look at it, tell me what I did right and what I could have done better. (Yes, the timing isn't just right, but I wanted to convey the idea quickly, not tweak it to perfection.) To find it, search for "Lightning machine" by hleerendal. The contraption (sans sound effects) is given as a price bubble at the end, so you can take a look at it yourselves.

I'd have posted this as F4F, but I don't feel I'm experienced enough yet to give constructive feedback.

Looks about how I'd do it. I just turned off the PS3, but a wheel with keys is probably the best way to get it done.2009-08-21 02:46:00

look up my level, its a how to, im not on right now but i got all the timing and sound effects figured in and lightning. i have it all a prize at the end, if not let me kno and i will add it2009-08-21 04:13:00

that is exactly how I made my lightning generator on the level: King of Bounce.2009-08-21 12:23:00

I just checked it out... it looks good and is a nice simple design. My only advice would be to make the wheel much larger with more keys, so that you can achieve a more seemingly random pattern. You may have to change your rotation speed and change the radius of your keys though.2009-08-21 15:34:00

Thanks for the replies. Glad to see that my line of thinking wasn't miles off the mark, and that I'm actually doing something right. Encouraging. Now that I know my concept is like many of you would do it, I can go back and tweak the timing of the switches and add other effects.2009-08-22 08:34:00

I'm using your lightning machine in my newest level: Sack of War (not yet published).

I hope you don't mind.
Don't worry though, I've credited you.
There's a switch that turns it on; and when you turn it on, your name appears

It's looks awesome ^^

I don't mind at all. I think the idea isn't an original one, and I'm glad to know someone found a use for it ? even in its unfinished stage. And thank you for being kind enough to give me credit. A lot of people wouldn't have bothered, especially not making an in-game credit. Let me know when it's published and I'll have look, and if you're interested I'll give you some feedback.2009-08-26 01:24:00

ok, i was FINALLY able to go online today. i played it and i have to say that it is pretty good. however, it wasn't random enough for me. which is to say, i knew exactly when the lightning was gonna strike and the sounds where a bit cheap. im not trashing iswear just constructive criticism so you can perfect your method. i think it has good potential but it looks like it takes up some thermo. if you check out my level how to: Stormgenerator, or something or other. you can see how i made it more random (though not truly random) and it sets space between strikes
sorry for any grammatical errors, i had corrective surgery on my eyes a couple of days ago (the one that takes 5 to 7 days to recover) and i dont like looking at the screen right now (a bit bright)

Well, I scaled it down to make it fit into view, and the sound effects were more an afterthought. Like I said, I just wanted to convey the idea quickly. I know what to do now to make a more seemingly random pattern, thanks to some great feedback. I'll make sure to check out your level, though ? always good to see someone else's approach to a similar idea. (As for thermo, I'm pretty sure it's rather thermo friendly, but I can't remember right now.)

And don't worry, I didn't take it as trashing. If I am to improve as a creator, then I need someone to pinpoint my flaws, even/especially the obvious ones.

I wish you an uncomplicated recovery, and to see you back here harder, better, faster, stronger once your eyes have healed.

thats pretty much the same as i did it but mine was smaller and then copied. i found that moving the contraptions further and closer to the playing area created loader and quiter lightning strikes. after some tweaking i even got it working in a random manor... something else that adds to the effect is rain. but to do it effectively you need the old thick thin layer glitch because that can pass though thin materials and in front of think materials. it's ashame i never finished the level because i don't own lbp any more. never mind though i'll get the GOTY eddition..2009-09-09 13:47:00

Hey, I had an idea for a lightning generator too. Except it was much more complex to build, and probably much more complex than it needed to be. The wheel design looks a lot better, and I'm sure it won't lag like mine.2009-09-16 12:42:00

I tried making one last night.

It didn't work.

It was attached to the worst randomizer ever! (One that I threw together in 40 seconds...)

This looks solid, but already fancier than anything I've built for lightning!

My best lightning machines have always been this:

An irregular shape attached to a wobble bolt set to flipper, over a piece of material attached to a piston at high speed (maybe also flipper, I don't remember) - make sure they're at different speeds and out of sync. Slap a mag key or two on the edges of your irregular shape (mine looks a bit like a really simple tree branch, contains about 6 or 7 corners), with the key switch up on the dark matter. I've also played around with doing similar things, but with springs and elastics instead of the wobble bolt. the idea is that the irregular shape just sort of flips out, twirling around and occasionally hits the mag key switch. Actually, my current best system has the switch set to "invert", so the keys only occasionally LEAVE the switch radius.

On top of this, I put my lightning-emitter on a moving piece of material, set on a high speed wobble bolt (and attach that to a piston if you want more movement and randomness). The mag key switch connects to both the emitter as well as a very bright offscreen fairy light.

Overall, the system uses very few switches and very few vertices, and with a bit of tinkering to get the speeds and movements and switch radius right, you can get very random, very realistic lightning results, and it takes up a minimum of space in the level.

But, that being said, to get there it did take me a few broken lightning machines and a decent deal of trial and error.

Thanks for the replies and different approaches, guys. I've been busy with my other creative projects, and my gaming time has consisted of replaying Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2) again. I hope to pick up LBP sometime soon, though. Just wanted you to know that your views are not ignored, but really appreciated.2009-09-22 02:00:00
