Quality of Critique

Archive: 24 posts

So I published my first actual unlocked level an hour or so ago, and it's very exciting for me. "Will people like it?" "Will they hate it?" Most importantly - "what advice will they give me?"

So here I am a little bit later, I'm sitting at 4 star / 4 play / 2 heart (Brilliant / Weird) and ... yay, I get my first comment.

"Critique! Awesome!", I think.

And it's ... someone wanting me to play their level "robot world".

For the more experienced publishers out there, I ask ... what is the ratio of comments you get useful comments to spam?

I am not really one of the most experienced publishers, but I would say 1 interesting comment for... Hmmm 2 spams...

But actually, it depend of when you take a look. If you open a thread here in the level showcase, your levels will received a lot of usefull comments from members that read your post. And during this small period of time, spam can be neglictible...

I couldn't give you a ratio...but I would advise that you don't expect good feedback through the comments section. The best you'll get is the very very odd person telling you specific part they liked, or didn't like, about it etc.

Most will be very generic and like this:

'Great level, 5 stars, play my levels!!!' (I like to call these nice spammers)
'5 stars and heart'
'Great'
'Play my levels'
'H4H'

If you're after feedback...this is the place to be!

Yeah, Jack is right. Most of the comments you'll get will be below useful in game.

Best bet is to go to the level showcase and make a thread about it.
You'll get lots of great advice and tips for your level and it will really help you improve you skill as a creator.

The best I ever got was two comment box spanning feedback. That happened once in 9 or so month...
Usually it's "Got stuck", "Boss too hard" if anything. WHile comments like that are nice they don't help much and also are far too rare. Just ask for feedback here and on other websites.

hmmmm... I do have a level with 1500 plays and its about 1/4 H4H, 1/4 GR8 level, try my levels, and half actually good comments. If you ever get a stupid comment like "jksngksgbnghk", its probably someone just commented for a trophy...2009-08-19 18:50:00

Hmmm, I'm still sitting at 4 stars after 11 plays but I just got a "frustrating" tag and only one other person has made it to the scoreboard.

Yep.

To be fair, I don't know if I'll get as many generic "you're the best" type comments as you, but I'll try to see if I can pull some of those - if not now, someday

Nevermind, I've just seen ARD's post below me, so I've moved the feedback.2009-08-19 19:08:00

I used to give feedback in the comments, but these days I usually just either tell them I`m saying something here or recommend that they join here. The space allocated to the comments isn`t really big enough to allow in depth feedback.

In fact for the most part I just use the comments section to leave stupid comments these days.

Yeah, like quoting from Mary Poppins.... Chim chiminy chim chiminy chim chim sharoo....

Anyhooo....

I don't think I've had virtually ANY helpful comments on any of my levels. Even ones that might have been helpful are not done in a helpful way. Here are the most helpful I've received:

Starship Troopers - "Your level made me physically sick! 0 stars!" "Too dark!" then right underneath it "I like it dark!" (Julesyjules)
Splat Invaders Saga - "Would be a good level if you play balanced it"
Splat Invaders II - "Not as great as the first one!"
Vertigo! - "OMFG!!!!!!!!"
Destiny! - "How about letting people actually SOLVE the puzzles before you kill them???"
Tiger Woods Mini Golf - "LOL Whaaaaat????"

I got a comment saying: "Can you make a WIDESCreNe VERsion for single player" or something like that. Of course I would love to do that but the game is in 16:9 so I can't make it any wider unless you buy a fancy new 21:9 TV and MM supports it.2009-08-19 19:26:00

This thread is bringing back memories of the weird comments one we had a while ago, that was a great thread.

The best one I got, "More like From Siberia With g@y". I laughed hard at that one, I still quite haven't worked it out. Unless of course he meant he was exceedingly happy to have played it, but I doubt that.

That made me laugh. I do that quite a lot actually. 'More like....' and then make some random crap.

Well, it looks like I actually DID get some "best thing ever" type comments so ... I'm pretty proud of my first little public level posting (although I'd like to see the rating bumped up a star). At this rate, I might break 750 / 1,000 plays by the end of the day ... assuming it doesn't taper off.

All the thread comments though are now pretty much "this level was reposted". I wish it didn't need to do that. So, as far as critique via direct comments, I guess republishing sabotages that a little.

I just get loads of spam comments, or how does that work comments, or comments saying that my levels is trash, nothing useful there

Although i got 2 "this is awesome" type comments, on my music level, they seemed to enjoy the level

I think a lot of people who leave comments don't have a keyboard hooked up, so they can't be bothered to type out useful critiques. So instead, we get such winners as "too dark", "great!" "great, hearted, please try my levels", etc.

I used to make it a habit to leave a comment on every single level I played, no matter what, but I packed up my keyboard and nowadays I just don't. I think a lot of comments just get buried beneath the spam and such. I know I've been terrible at getting back to people who comment on my stuff. I've had like 2 dozen comments asking me how I did the movie effect, and the first 6 or 7 I actually sent PSN messages to with in-depth details on how to do it, but holy crap I couldn't keep that up.

I think the rub is the lack of keyboards. Who wants to pull out a keyboard to play a console game? Not many, I would wager.

When I first publish a level and it's new it seems to get a lot of genuine and nice feedback, but once you get to cool levels all you'll really see is a lot of spam and "good level" comments, nothing much more.2009-08-20 00:53:00

I'd say most comment boxes are filled with a melange of spam, h4h, and a healthy dose of nonsense. Comments are like levels really; some are good, most are crap. Kind of like people.

Personally, I'd be more inclined to make better comments if the comment boxes weren't so small. It makes it difficult for me to communicate.

Edit: Oh yeah.....j. Some have the letter j. :o

I do hate when people comment just to say something like "try my lvl plz thank u" or the ever-annoying H4H. Trophies are stupid, Im sorry.

Though I do have a decent amount of ACTUAL comments in my levels.

To be fair though, alot of them are people cursing at me.

As if it's my fault.

LoL I liked the comments on my date with Suzie. That is a very unique level and if you haven't played it...blablablablabla
*regaining focus*
I appreciate comments I get on my levels (I just delete the h4h comments, so they don't count) even if they are nothing comments.

up-loaded pictures, though, I adore. I wish I could down-load them and save them to my hard drive. even especially the ones where some one has decided to slap stickers all over the place. It's kind of there own art.

Of course, I'm small potatoes, and don't get any mean spirited pictures. (yet)
